My thoughts exactly. Coming up in ranks at the gym dealership I would make friends with the top dogs and do there dirty work and in return I would learn a lot from them. I thought I was good back in my 20's but in my 30's I looked back and realized I didn't know shit. 40's I feel the same way. Their is truly to much stuff with the time's changing to know everything.

Hi, nice video. Yup, I've watched tons of Nicks programs too. I am in process on a .040 over SBC with 10.5:1, right quench, good heads and internals with a Howards hydraulic roller cam to make that lift that you did. Additionally I have been following David Vizard for years and worked out a shorter lobe separation angle, 108 degrees, from his process. Can't wait!

Right on man, you'll find that the tighter LSA helps alot with torque. Vizards formulas definitely help with cam selection. Alot of people disagree online but ive tried it, dyno tested it and it works as he says

On the dingleball 355 make sure you get the cam with a 108 LSA. You will pick up more power under the curve than with a similar cam with a 110 or a 112 LSA. Plus you shouldn't have any issues with idle quality.

Cool Video ! Im building a .040 bored 350ci SBC Having a hydraulic roller cam ground special. Very close to your cam here. Same duration with .547/.547 lift and 112 LSA at 4 degrees advance Icon pistons for 10.6-1 comp. Floteck aluminum heads and Dougs ceramic 1 3/4" longtubes. My hope was 435hp.. Looks doable..

I watched a video today 7-2024 after market block and crank good heads 64cc good rods roller cam flat top pistons roller rockers intake 350 ci sbc .030 bore it dynoed 410 hp tq was close to that. big $$$. the video from phenex az us.

You're probably aware but Summit sells that exact hydraulic roller camshaft for the gen 1 SBC (retro fit) with the LS firing order for $243 Part number 1223. That's a steal. I've looked into LS firing order in the past for a few builds. Comp wanted $1000 for the core on my BBC and that was about 6 years ago.

Yeah, I did know that. I wish I knew that back when i got the cam for the youtube 355 as I would have added it to the votes for what cam to use. Anyone else chrages close to $500+ usd to a billet cam equivalent

@@cuttersperformance I'm going to use it in a 355 I happen to be doing, using a set of the new Comp Evolution cartridge lifters, and a pair of aluminum Trick Flow hump heads (painted) for an old school appearance. Should be in the 400hp range.

@firebirdjone yeah for sure! Same cam specs as the youtube 355? But with the LS firing order. I was impressed with the cam, it will have great drivability and the broad rpm range is nice. Not quite the specs that I want for the dingle ball 355, so im going custom grind for that one. Going for 450+ hp but it certainly wont have the idle vaccum

Was the block decked? Just wondering the actual piston to deck measurement to add to the crushed head gasket thickness for squish/quench. Great job on Nicks Garage!

Block was decked and Pistons were .0085 in the hole Actual compressed headgasket thinkness was .034 (advertised at .028)

I'm building a sbc 339 (+.060 305 block with a forged 3.75" stroke crank) and will be using the same heads and a Summit 1107 hyd flat tappet cam, forged flat tops. It'll be interesting to see how close they are in power.

learned my lesson not tapping front cam holes with a HV-55 pump. Blew out then took out gears on timing set.

@@cuttersperformance It is a brand new motor lost oil pressure all of a Sudden. Found the Cam plugs in the middle of the lowest block it took out all the teeth found them all in the oil Pan and one tooth in the lifted gallery all back together now just putting on a custom police set up and should be ready to go.

Give it 16.57 lbs of boost and slider hook the rocker legs. If you have 40 thou clearance on the hydraulic tube bearing you should be ok. Sub from Ontario, thx to Nick, hope i can slide some ideas your way

Yes definitely interested in the specs for the dingle ball 355 I have 4 engines 3 roller style engines ,a 355 80-85 block with built 350 swirl port heads not sure what was done but the engine did 13s in a 82 Monte with auto 3.73 gears I want to put a set of vortec heads on it plus I have another 355 crate 87-95 block with vortec heads 2.02/1.6 cut down guides with a 280H-10 and another crate 350 vortec 880 with stock truck cam specs never ran gas only propane it was a industrial generator v8 with about 2500 hrs it’s really clean 906 heads timing chain is still tight hardly any play on it want to put a higher lift cam on it plus I have a 87 305 roller motor 87000 Kms with decent heads the 184/1.5 I want to put that similar corvette 300hp cam in it eventually plus I have a 72 350 block with those 70 camel humps and a Rv cam to so lots to do before spring

Didn't break the dyno, but the dyno water break couldn't hold it with the turbo torque, and it had to be tweaked abit. It was a great time!

Pat- I’d love to see the proper camshaft in this engine. I built a similar 355 w/same heads and similar touch up work. I ran a solid flat tappet comp cam similar specs but on a 109 and it made 458hp. A guy Gord in Canada actually bought it from me and put it on the dyno up there.

A cam with a tighter LSA would have certainly been my first choice, but as I often say, there's no perfect cam. The trade-off would be less idle vaccum, fuel mileage, ease of tuning, etc.. so a guy looking for an easy driving cruiser with power brakes might take the 20ish hp loss, and this cam would be a better choice. The issue is that most of us like too much cam haha chop chop 😅

Have you ever had a problem finding a intake to match these cheap heads, I had to use a Victor Jr to get the ports to match up, I’d like a dual plane but I don’t know what to ask for.😂 Learning so much from you Pat, you’re a Awsome teacher.🇨🇦👍

Why not use pop up pistons like L2304 ? compression is your friend to build more HP especially with the right deck height and head gaskets all questions love your build great numbers 👍

Happy new year Pat! All of your sbc videos are great. Specially the vortec head porting ones. Any chance on a video of how we could repair the cracked heads? Do you think cutting out the crack and filling it with braze would work? I’m talking about the crack in the middle from the head bolt hole and between the centre chambers. Brazing is much easier than spray welding and stitching I think.

I haven't done it personally, typically i wont repair them. But they can be repaired with a sleeve in the head bolt hole. Thanks for checking out my videos

I'm assuming the stock SBC roller lifters could be reused with the Summit-880x cams? I have a Summit-8801, the little brother to the cam you used. GM Vortec 880 block, Vortec L-31 heads valve guides cut down and reworked with beehive springs. Lift should be okay to .550" with 1.5 ratio rockers.

Its bored .030 over. A 350 block bored .030 is 355, .040 is a 357 and .060 is a 360 with a stock stroke of 3.480

Pat if u was to build a stock 880 block what would u gap the rings ? Ima run this motor all NA so I don't need any extra ring gap.. I hear 4 thal for every 1" of cylinder bore, so tht would put the gap at 16 thal ??? Or would run the top ring at 18 and the 2nd ring at 20 thal ???? Or would do 16 thal on the top ring and 18 thal on the 2nd ring 🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️🤷‍♂️ to get 16 thal or 18 thal, I would have to get 10 thal over rings..

What pistons are you running? Hypereutectic pistons will often need more ring gap, especially if they are Keith Black pistons. A stock hyper piston its a good idea to go .005 per inch top ring and .0055 2nd ring. KB pistons want .0065 for the top rings

I think they are fel pro 1094, they are a .015 compressed steel shim gasket, but you need very good surface finish on block and heads. I think you need goog finish for comatec MLS gaskets also...

The firing order is a waste of time. Save your money there. Also an off the shelf cam will be just fine. Custom will gain you so little (and possibly nothing)
