That back is one of if not the most stunning things I've ever seen in wood. It was amazing before the stain, but now it's just incredible. If that never gets played, it should be on the wall, back to the viewer. Of course, it BETTER get played. What a stunner! BTW, Jerry's t shirts are very nice. I got the whole set and I am enjoying them big time. Very comfortable.

@wadehampton15344 жыл бұрын
I've been following this from the start, and that's an absolutely stunning instrument. You do incredible work, Jerry! Your staining technique is familiar to me, Jerry. I make tobacco pipes out of the burl of the Mediterranean White Heath Tree (aka Briar). I use alcohol based leather dyes, the same brands that you use, to stain my pipes. Yellow is the first color that I put down, then blend in a red and/or brown. I light the pipe on fire to burn off the alcohol, the heat drives the stain deeper into the wood. I'm no stranger to hand sanding either, but my pieces are a lot smaller than a mandolin. It's interesting that we use such similar techniques to finish our products, however I do not (nor should anyone) lacquer or varnish my pipes. I apply pure carnauba wax with a flannel buffing wheel. It provides a 'breathable' high gloss finish that seals and protects the Briar wood. It needs to be reapplied ever so often, and many pipe shops have a buffer wheel in the back room, and with buff customers pipes for free. It's kind of a good will service that pipe shops offer to patrons.

Hi Jerry. My son and I love your videos. While you were talking about the lacquer running away from the holes and oil varnish not doing that, I started thinking about a technique I've seen in modelling with epoxy. These guys pour epoxy to make a river or an ocean scene and while the epoxy is going off it generates bubble in the surface., This is not for the same reason as yours because yours originate in the wood, but their solution for this is to quickly blast the surface with a blow torch. Just enough to encourage the bubbles to burst and the epoxy to settle in to the depression. Not sure if this idea would work for you at all, and of course it seems stupidly dangerous but the thought jumped in to my head and I thought I'd pause the video (25:09) and share it :-) Again love the videos. Oh just to be clear I wasn't suggesting using epoxy on the instrument, but more the idea of application of heat in whatever you are using.

I wanna say. For all those who fuss about his instruments being so expensive. This is why. He takes his time. Did he mention it takes forever sanding and scratching the finish off for the binding. Then more sanding and spraying and sanding and spraying.
@walthansen63334 жыл бұрын
I just found this channel, and I'm rather curious as to what his instruments go for.... This one, I would have to think is upwards to $10,000. If I had the disposable income for a mandolin, I'd pay in that neighborhood.

More great stuff, thanks Jerry. I can only imagine the satisfaction you must feel at building a beautiful, high quality instrument like this, with your own two hands. When you produce your final video on this mandolin build, I would love to hear about how much time you spent building it. Not sure if you mark a time card for your builds, but it would be really cool to know approx much time you spent on each major step, or even just the total hours.

When you do the hand routing, lay some frog masking tape along the perimeter to avoid the aluminum mark you'll have to sand out. I cant stand when I get it perfect only to have to redo it. The reason I say frog tape is it has very consistent thickness and peaks away easily with no residue
