I used to be a service manager for a JD dealership in the 80's. Your diagnosis is good. Have the dealership rebuild the topshaft if you're not comfortable with pressing the new components on. You really need to rebuild the two-speed in the clutch housing while you are so close. The packings are undoubtedly leaking and showing you the signs of a bad trans pump. Also, replace the packings in the trans pump lines in the bottom of the case and the packings between the cases. This will give you more hydraulics than the new pump believe it or not. Hope this helps.

Great video Wes and great decision. You can't let that tractor leave the farm and I just say that sentimentally. Keeping the tractor will make you and your Grandmother feel great. It is also a good tractor with very few problems for it's age. It has been a good tractor and has done a lot of work on your family's farm and I hope you keep it around so that maybe if you have grandchildren going to work on the farm they too can operate it. We will all look forward to more videos as you complete the work on the ole' girl because she is worth it!!!!!

Hunker down and do the job. That's definitely the attitude to have with a project like this. I agree with you completely about doing the job yourself (if you have the skills and time), especially if your strapped for cash a lot. That's how I learned to do stuff, Dad got the parts and I tore it down and put the new ones in. I haven't tried splitting a big tractor yet, but have down a few smaller ones. Really, If you can find the I&T manuals for what your working on, you can get a lot done. They are well written and have good diagrams and pictures.

yeh i had a quote from my dealer to replace pto clutch on a 4040 it was £3000 parts and labour, i did it for £300 parts plus my time and that was both clutches. cant wait to see the split. graet vid im learning so much, thanks for the ride!

Wes, great decision to repair the tractor yourself. It would be a good time to clean up that back end while you have it split and repaint it and put the new kit in the cab. Make it look nice for your grandmother.

Alert for anyone watching these old videos……4430 original quad range transmission pump was marginal from the start. Be sure to install the updated version like a 4440. Do the research, it is a must. There are other options the keep the parts cheaper. A and I through your Deere dealer for instance. (I bought a 1977 4430 in 1978, work done: top shaft, engine overhaul, injection pump, bottom shaft, axel bearings (very common - check them) interior, JD air seat, AC update to 134A, K and M step, LED lights, replace cushions and armrests. ). Very dependable and made me money for the last 40 years. To me there ARE NO SERIOUS PROBLEMS that a 4430 can have…….no codes, and low chance of being a burn victim.

Hi Wes, been watching you for a while from Ontario and love the videos. I also farm with older tractors and yes sometimes they break but so do the new ones. Glad you can tear into one and inspire others by doing so. Only watch you and billstmaxx and he has shut down comments because of a hater troll . Of course when a tractor has sentimental bond you should repair it! My brother ( he has a JD shop) also has a 4430 which we stripped back in say like 10 years to make a pro-stock tractor out of it. When he bought this 4430 it also came from the US with some transmission problems.I have put a lot of hours in his tractor which I didn't charge him ,and eventhough it's not my 4430,but I also have a kinda sentimental bond with it

I agree about doing the job! Wes can do the job and the tractor will be a very good tractor for the jobs he has for it. I'd be willing to bet the ole' girl will do way more than he expects of her. I always say when referring to automobiles that the best ride you can have is the one you have right now. What's $1000 or $2000 spent on a vehicle relative to car payments? Nothing! Fix it , Wes!

Wes, Hang in there. Could be much worse. That "OLD" tractor comes from an era of some of the best iron and machinery this country ever produced. The grey iron content and forging methods have gone by the wayside for softer, cheaper and greater profits. Forty years of service is well deserving of the repair. We owned and used some of the exact same JD you have and I promise it is by far the best and will still be in use after you pass if cared for. I'll take a forty or even sixty year JD over any of the newer machinery any day, even broken or in need of repair. Be wary of supposed Genuine OE and some aftermarket parts due to country of origin, but there are still good aftermarket transmission parts that are better than what JD can offer as the original JD suppliers are long gone. I'd bet you can get better synchros from a quality company other than JD. I have had multitudes of issues with what I thought were Genuine OE parts. Only to learn it was re-packaged commodity parts and didn't last as intended. FIX it. You won't regret it. And get the Squatch in there as he needs to know this if he intends to hang with the farm. I find if young people know what it takes to fix something they operate and care for it in greater ways and work to prevent damages. Knowledge and experience is power for success and wealth. All machines wear and have to be cared for if they are to last. You have a considerable amount of unseen wealth in the equipment you own. Prices and values are only opinions, and vary from person to person. But with your knowledge, experience and ambitious drive, you are far ahead of others. And thus, have tremendous unrecognized wealth. And not just in greenbacks. If I could, I would do like you and scavenge up all the old JD equipment I could. There is a company if NE Texas that handles only Ford tractors & equipment. They buy up used Ford AG equip. Then refurb, restore and resell to, believe it or not, Asia & Indonesia. He is sending containers monthly of refurbed USA Ford Ag equipment. The people of those countries recognize the superiority and value of older USA equipment over new products from their own area. Go figure! We get their new plastic junk and they are buying up the last of the USA iron. The biggest reason I would do it, is the value of your grandma knowing her tractor still lives on her farm is PRICELESS. I'd bet she will gleam from ear to ear with pride and happiness. Where's Tim if I were him I'd be watching closely because you know your way around a tractor and can't put a price on being able to do these jobs at home. I'm with you on rebuilding and reworking these tractors I don't like having to many payments on equipment. If you ask me with all the new technology and recalls on equipment the technology has moved to fast to where half the mechanics don't even know how to fix the new machines because they haven't had time to take the courses to learn how to fix them. The old ones run just as good comfort can be an issue but take care of them and they'll take care of you great vid can't wait for the next one

you need the tractor splitting jack set that my grandfather made ,, it's a machine that my grandfather invented about 45 years ago it consists of 2 large jacks with supports to hold the 2 ends of the tractor these 2 jacks set on a pair of tracks and are connected by 2 large screws,, turning the screws slides one jack back allowing you to split the tractor and roll the rear section back a total of 5 feet ,, and since both sections are strapped to the jacks the parts won't tip and it is easy for 1 man to realign the sections and get it back together

What to do Wes? I agree, wise choice. Yah, perhaps you can get another used headache for 15k$. But when you compare 12k$ to 75k$, it's worth it for some farmers, if the tractor is otherwise in pretty good shape. I have an older car that needs about 1k$, and it may cost 2k$ for the same used. But when I compare 1k$ to 22k$ for a new one, I'll fix it. It's paid for, no loans makes it worthwhile. As long as you'll get many good years from the 4430, lless than 1k$ for DIY is a good deal.

Went through that with a White 2-70. Liked the tractor and it was in good overall shape but needed engine overhaul and clutch. Plus it had a good quick-tatch loader on it. Cost me almost what the tractor was worth to fix it but couldn't get a good used replacement for less than twice the amount and it would still be a pig in a poke. At least I know what I'm running after the repairs.

There is a shop here in southern indiana that replaced my syncronizers for $1,800 in the 4630. One other shop i priced it was $2,300. They split the tractor but not sure how many man hours it was.

Take the vicegrips off the battery, just to save shorting it out. never leave tools sitting on batteries. It looks straight forward just heavy and a bit awkward. You can do it easily.

Some of the price that is charged by the dealer is what is considered "the warranty price". The warranty price is the cost of them having to tear it down and do it again because the way they repaired it requires a second teardown. The second teardown may happen because the customer receives the tractor and two weeks later something came undone as the mechanic missed something. I cant believe you just used that filthy wrench in there, Dont you ever clean the dirt out of them? Well the camera made it look like you had dirt in the open end.

it will be sprayed down and cleaned out with diesel fuel before its put back together so don't worry about a little bit of dirt on the end of a wrench... plus all the facing off of the synchronizers will do way more damage than a little dirt from a wrench... and yes i wipe down the wrenches all the time..

If you think Deere charge crazy prices for the warranty on their work and it's free if they screw up big time good luck. If anything goes wrong round here after your on your own, unless your lawyers better than theirs or you get lucky. A guy I used to work for had a 9400 dump AF in the oil. Deere re built it, messed up and it destroyed the motor the first run down the field seeding. Was going to be something like $30.000 on him, the customer!. He got lucky one of the shop guys said something he shouldn't about it, a plug was not put back right during the rebuild. Deere had to pay up in the end!, Shortly after that the guy who commented was dismissed for inappropriate conduct , Go figure that out!

BML54 Hi Don't know who your friends dad is If it's a Deere dealership, that warranty is better than what we get from the crooks round here, he must value his customers and have good mechanics to start with, those guys are hard to find now. In my shop I would re do the work for free if the guys not happy after. Touch wood I've never had a big job back to do again. Thats the difference being self employed My names on it, so it pays to get it right. i've had the odd faulty part show up like a clutch on the test run. That wasn't my fault, they cost enough money you can't bill the customer the time for to swap it out and parts guys don't warranty the time either !. At some big dealers, there's usually a big lot of guys with blank looks on there faces that seem to only say "wasn't me" if it's screwed up good and proper. I worked at 2 dealer shops, I like to sleep at night and not lie to the customer about his machines mechanical well being for dealer gain, when it blows up a few weeks later with something we were told to keep quiet about, when we mentioned it to the service manager after seeing the start of the problem. i'ts not every dealer that does it i know. But with multi branch guys, the instructions come from the top. Thats why my tools came home one Friday in late 2003, and have been here ever since. Regards Robert
