thanks for going through the trouble of taking us along on the rebuild. Like to see

Hi . Thanks for the video. We split my 4430 taken the top shaft out replace the plates and bearings . Put all back and started it still jumps out of gears and alot of grinding . Have an openstasion lots of play on the links . But even putting in 1st gear still jumps out . Any ideas?

Check the clearance between the Synchro drums and the shift collar and if there's too much slob it can pop out and if the splines get grounded down it can pop out

Thanks for the video. To get top shaft out what is the split procedure? Just Roll rearend out?

Split at transmission to clutch housing, remove shift cover. Shift forks, front bearing, transmission pump,

Nice job. Brings back memories of rebuilding a 4840 power shift. Did the 30 series have an updated rear differential? Or was that only the 4630?
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Жыл бұрын
Yeah that was a little before my time but there was a 4-pin differential that they came out with later

You mentioned in a previous video about the new updated blower motors. Do you have a part number ? I have two of these tractors and constantly fighting blower motors and wiring for them . Thank you
Do you know how to remove the synchronizer out without removing the rear rock shaft (lift cover), I have it split at the transmission, took the plate off and race on the large end but it won't slide back and out. I have the gear selector bracket off.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms37544 ай бұрын
@@rnccen you have to take the rock shaft housing off and then you have to take the oil pump out

I repaired my synchronizer, got it all back together, started it up but I only have range C & D.... A & B grind and won't go into gear. I looked in the manual but can't locate anything that addresses, any thoughts?
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms37543 ай бұрын
Did you do anything with the bottom shaft? Maybe linkage adjustment for a place to start?!
@rnccen3 ай бұрын
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 I did not touch the bottom shaft, just the top shaft. I'll take a look at the linkages next.
@rnccen3 ай бұрын
Took a look and adjusted the linkages, I have speed 3-4 in range C&D & R1-2, nothing in A&B...just grinding, in 1-2 for A, B, C, & D. ordered some new cab isolators as mine don't look to good, I'm wondering if the Hi-Lo disks are in need of replacement.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms37543 ай бұрын
@rnccen so gears first and second are grinding. I took it as range a and range B were grinding Then something on the Synchro drum is out of place. Not uncommon for a disc to fall out of place when installing that top shaft that's why I tape them drums together when I got everything put together on the bench. That way there's no room for movement of them drums
@rnccen3 ай бұрын
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Range A & B grind, speed 1 & 2 grind, I'll pull the top cover off again and see if any of the tab plates are out of place.

If someone brought you a early synchro 4020 that was in working condition, how much do you think it would cost to freshen up the transmission and final drive. Asking for a friend. Hahaha. This is something I'd like to do with my 4020 myself but time is a major problem for me so the only way I could get it done myself is to buy a second 4020, which I would like to do but the values have shot past $14,000 for anything worth bringing home.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Жыл бұрын
Depends what you say freshen up. To put bearings in the transmission and do the rear axles and brakes. Assuming all parts for a good you just had to get all new brake pads and bearings and seals and gaskets for the job. Could it be done for around 5 to 6 grand
@danw6014 Жыл бұрын
@@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 that's pretty much what I was thinking about. And new synchros. Put everything back to specs and proper tolerances. Thank you. May still end up having to get a second 4020. I'd like a power shift for hay anyway.

That is a complicated unit. I barely use all the gears in my 4+low/high transmission in my 1950s Ferguson. How inexpensive do you think JD could build a modernized tractor matching what was built the 1950s? Just a basic row-crop tractor (but using strip-till/no-till/regen-ag) if they really wanted to? Cut all the gizmos, GPS and A/C eat HPs. Smaller implements too because you don't need to farm five thousand acres just to make payments? Factories built ten- to twenty-thousand units a year back then where modern factories are building maybe a thousand units? With all the new homesteaders, going to smaller farms could be a new long term trend. I bet if a guy thought about it a bit, there could be a future white-board discussion of profitability+cash flow comparing a 10, 100, and 1000 acre farm using 'right sized' simple equipment on strip/no-till/regen-ag principles. Back in the day, one grandfather of mine ran a 600 acre dairy operation with a pair of 30hp tractors, including long days plowing.
@jonstevensmaplegrovefarms3754 Жыл бұрын
You know that's a conversation that a guy sees a couple times a year. I believe the most popular tractor market around the world is the smaller tractors the Massey Ferguson 4710 That was the goal of the versatile articulated tractor being built right now. Open platform for GPS and a simple proven engine transmission No-Frills kind of tractor and they flat-out perform. I would rather push one of them then drive a John Deere 9rx but they're not picking up much territory. Most of your rowcrop guys are stuck in that mindset that you need to keep growing in acres and that's why there's so much money invested in that high horsepower front-wheel drive. Massey Ferguson still offers some smaller tractors that you can really cheapen them down with options but they hardly sell any of them that way
@MACE1-1 Жыл бұрын
In two words "they wont"...The John Deere that built the Iron Horse series is a thing of yesteryear and so were the caliber of engineers...There are many reasons why they continue to exist today. I think the mindset of the "small" guy needs to change and re-evaluate what they want out of life and whats important. I see the farmers getting bigger trucks, tractors, lawnmowers, everything to include higher debt. Where are the debt-free farmers?
