With Matt and Andy doing some spring plowing, Matt hooks the old John Deere 4440 up to the do-all and gives her a good workout. But will the recent repairs hold up and how does it compare to the more modern New Holland tractors the Griggs run???

My grandfather used the 4440 in front of a 12 row planter back in the 80's and 90's. He used a 4630 in front of a disk and chisel plow and an 8640 for the larger disks. Brought back memories of sitting in the cab with him working in the field when I was a little kid.

The 8 speed powershift will rob a lot of horsepower. Same tractor with the quad range is night and day difference.

I believe that the 4440 was the best selling of all the iron horses that style john deere from the early 70s to the late 80s was probably the best series of deeres ever made

A 4440 was a huge machine when they first came out. And I love to see the older tractors out working. But that is a whole lot of tool for a 150 hp 2wd tractor to be dragging around. I grew up operating the older tractors and It blows my mind what a modern all wheel drive tractor is capable of doing. Thanks for the video.

Creo que el 4440 es un icono de la historia de john Deere, pero la presencia y la figura que tiene con ese doble rodado además del sonido de su motor es algo simplemente hermoso... Algo que ya no se ve en los equipos de hoy en dia👍👍😍😍

Love a do all. Had a 13ft forest city and a 19ft Ih 468. When you have the dirt coming over the blades like a waterfall is when it’s pulling hard and leaving the soil worked perfect.

Every region of the country is different, but here in East Central Georgia we rely heavily on strip tillage for corn and cotton. For peanuts we use a 9 shank KMC ripper/roller followed by a do-all to incorporate chemicals. We also spread a lot of Poultry litter for the nitrogen content.

Im thinking in those experiment plots, you should run every 3 years till. Tilling every year we know hurts the soil. But I havent seen much data personally on the hybrid approach. Winter Cover, till, summer harvest, then next 2 years winter cover no-till Would also be interesting to see you start Johnson Su Bioreactor plots and how that turns out

That’s a big tool for a 4440. Or any 150 horse tractor. A 15’ is all the money. Not that I know a lot about tillage, but their are times I do till. When we bought 1400 acres of lunar scape that couldn’t even grow weeds, we had 2 dozers hooked up I’n tandem with a huge single shank. It literally shook the world for the Subaru driving city folk in the area who moved out to the country for the fresh air.

2 for 1 today! Get to see Matt do tillage and run the 4440. 8 row scratcher do-all was pretty good load for a 4440 even when they were new. We can put some 20.8 rubber, ballast, and get it that fuel pump to make it pull the do-all but then you will probably be diving in the transmission LOL

Ww used to pull a 10 ft do-all with a 966 IH, which was right at 100 hp. A 25 ft do-all would then need 200-250 hp. It's not quite that simple, but it's close.

How did you not burst in to flames with all that green and yellow paint? I’m a fan of all colors. I love the 2 cylinder Deere’s, the 60-70’s TRUE Internationals, the 1460 rotor International combines. I think Ford had damn good tractors. So did White. White had some planters that were way ahead of their time. Then again, Deere makes some great stuff,but they’ve never been 1st. I think they let others make all the mistakes and go to market with a great product 10 years later. I just ordered 2 770 Deere combines after doing a few demos and buying 2 X9’s to lease to a custom harvester. The 770 performed better for me than anything on the market. Im organic, and the 780 and 790 are too rough on edible beans. I’ll always run out of forward speed before I put any stress on the back end. Equipment is fun. Their is so much amazing product tone had.

In the 1970s university of Illinois did a many years study, moldboarding every year would up your yield almost 20% yearly, and you can't grow vegetables without plowing yearly, so what's my view on no till,lower yield.

4440 was made at the same time the IH 1086 was and I've operated 4440 and both of them rated the same horsepower from the factory 130 horse but of course can turn them up but I will say that 1086 for raw unstoppable POWER will by far outperform the 4440

i learned something today. JD has proprietary hydraulic fittings? Thats a very JD thing to do. Matt how do you feel about the right to repair movement especially passing in colorado? I've asked millennial farmer the same question multiple times. As deep as he is in with JD im not shocked he's never responded to it.
@griggsfarmsllc
@griggsfarmsllc Жыл бұрын
The older John Deere’s required their own type of quick connect fittings. As did older IH equipment. As far as I know anything made in the last 30 years or so uses universal fittings. As far as right to repair in CO, not sure what you’re referring too. I’m in favor of Farmer’s and 3rd party techs having access to software that allow them to diagnose equipment and program new parts
@billwhitman1529
@billwhitman1529 Жыл бұрын
Pre-1980's JD did have proprietary fittings. We changed our servo's to Pioneer fittings like most others. It's an expense but you had to rebuild the old Deere Servo's so it's not a problem to rebuild them with the standard Pioneer.

As I understand it Matt, you're doing this tillage to smooth out the field? Did you consider rolling it? We have a similar problem in our hay fields and built a roller and ran it over the ground when it was a little moist and it leveled them out beautifully. It's not a common practice around here but I have a list of folks wanting to borrow our roller now, lol. After we roll a field, the next fall we will aerate the field to help loosen it. Just a question, not a criticism.

when the farm tought me how to run their IH do all they only wanted me to drag out my tracks that may be right for ground that is not in bad shape like you are dealing with any deeper than that was to deep just saying what do you think about v ripping and then maybe hitting with something very shallow to smoth out ripper tracks
@griggsfarmsllc
@griggsfarmsllc Жыл бұрын
We only do tillage where absolutely needed to fix rough areas in the field or level some ground out. Ripping ground is not a permanent solution as it destroys soil structure and will need continuous ripping. We use plant roots in our cover crops to get rid of any compaction we may have
