@@henrys3138 Adequate to stabilize a .45 Colt, but then you have the issue of getting truly lousy performance from shotgun ammo. So for the added weight and crappy balance of the Judge, you get mediocre performance from both rounds. The Judge is NOT rated for .45 Colt +P and the barrel is so short that shotgun ammo performs poorly. If you wanted a quality revolver in .45 Colt, Ruger makes any number of options that can eat the hot stuff. Then do the smart thing and buy a dedicated .410 bore shotgun if that's a caliber you want.

The .45 ACP cartridge was designed by J. M. Browning at the request of the US Army to replicate their load for the .45 Colt. 200 grain bullet going about 800 fps. Later they asked him to bump it up to 230 grains. There's a few more moving parts to make it an apples to apples comparison, since the 1911 was automatic with a shorter barrel than the Single Action Army and no cylinder gap and the SAA used blackpowder. Technically, the 1911 can use blackpowder if you have to since it uses recoil and not gas pressure.

I was reading an article or review of the Taurus Judge as a self-defense gun, and the author was noting that it is _NOT_ like have a "shotgun-in-your-pocket". It's extremely weak when using shot, and a person would be better off using 410-slugs. But if you're going to use 410-slugs, just use 45 long-colt. And because that's not as easy to find off-the-shelf, just use 45 ACP with moon-clips, which isn't any different in reality. But then if you're going to use that, just get a semi-auto in 45 -- you'll carry more and it'll be easier to shoot anyway.

I would expect 45acp and 45LC to perform about the same. The 45acp was roughly designed to deliver 45LC performance out of a semiautomatic. Modern 45LC is actually very underloaded so it won't blow up older style firearms, but if you take advantage of its capacity with modern powder, you can get some serious power out of it.
@rjoetting7594
@rjoetting7594 2 ай бұрын
What is amazing about the 45 colt is that the old black powder round actually was more powerful than the standard factory rounds of today. This has been proven many times over the years. 850 ft per second vs. 1050 ft per second This doesn't include modern custom loads
@Diemerstein
@Diemerstein 2 ай бұрын
The problem with the 45 colt ammo made today is, most of them are cowboy action loads, they are way under loaded. That doesn't mean you can't find ammo that packs quite a punch, so much so that the pistol he was using would blow up in his hands. The buffalo bore deer grenade out of my henry is a 260 grain leaving the muzzle at 1900 fps, whole different animal and not safe to use in most pistols.

@Diemerstein
@Diemerstein 2 ай бұрын
@@Fadaar Good for you I actually did ask them and here is what they said. The Henry Big Boy in 45 colt(Brass version or X) can handle the same pressure as the 44 magnum since they are made to the same specs. The only limit is grain size due to the length and not being able to cycle the round, they said not to load anything over 300 grains. It will not cycle 325 grain bear loads, but I can load one at a time through the ejection port and it fires no problem. One of the most powerful 45 colt round is the Buffalo Bore Deer Grenades and that turns it into a poor mans 45-70, it will kick like a shotgun and cycles no problem. With those rounds, it's more powerful than some of the hottest 44 magnum to give you an idea, never put those rounds into a colt single action clone pistol, it will blow it up, they are called Ruger only ammunition.
@FRLN500
@FRLN500 13 күн бұрын
@rjoetting7594 You are laboring under a misconception. The early loads pushed a 255 grain bullet at 1,050 fps. But, the military determined that it was to much recoil for the average soldier so the powder charge was reduced and muzzle velocity dropped to 855fps. The military later reduced the velocity to 738fps with a 250 grain bullet for the 1909 revolver. Current loads vary by manufacturer, but the 250 grain bullet is offered from 860 to 1,000fps. +P ammo can be used in some makes/models with the ballistic equivalent of a .44 magnum.

I have been a .45 fan for most of my 2 careers, one as a soldier when was a young man, the second as a police officer. I did carry a .45 long colt Smith and Wesson revolver for a year or so, it was a great revolver, the size and build as the mighty .44 magnum dirty harry carried but mine had a 4 inch barrel, I think the gun Harry carried had a six. One day a fellow offered to trade me his old Honda dream 250 for the revolver and I had to take him up on it, the Honda was in like new condition, had been garage kept from day one when the dude got it brand new back in the 60's. Then I changed to a .45 ACP buying an AMT Hardballer, that was a disappointment and I sold it off and got a standard M1911A1 built of new parts on an Interarms frame, carried that for several years then my brother in law talked me out of it, his kids sold it after he passed away, that was a disappointment, when I went to buy it back from the estate, it was already gone. I still have the Astra A-100 that I carried for my last 7 years as a cop it was in .45 ACP and sits in it's plastic case it came in when I ordered it new, I still had an FFL back then...

Without going through years of material in the search bar first... It'd be interesting to see the difference with: The ACP in the revolver against a semi, doesn't even need to be a 1911! The LC in a dedicated LC revolver, one of those Italian black powder replicas with the replacement cylinder, but any cowboy action would be fine. The 410 bore in any other pistol length format, plenty of single shot variants, still the barrel would be longer, and performance would probably improve. The last two are mostly because I still hold a dislike towards Taurus- just let people dislike what they want to dislike, and like what they want to like!

What's the point in using 45 Colt if you're not going to use hot loads?

I own a Governor S&W revolver. I got the raw aluminum one with the stainless steel cylinder. Love it!

doun;r up the expanded mesh on the shield so it overlaps and covers easch other's big gaps. it'll double the weight, but half the other one, and will cathc shrapnel big enough to hurt you.

I wonder if the cylinder gap had any effect on the 45acp. I also think it'd be cool to see 45acp and 45lc +p.

That was A LOT of unburnt powder stuck in the front of the block. No wonder it only went a couple inches.

Were those 45LC's cowboy loads, it'll do way more than that. Wonder what the difference would've been if it was a gun without all that free bore.

I have a question are you using in the 45 long colt, are you using cowboy loads or real hunting loads?

That thumbnail was interesting that extractor star and tooth star sure have seen it’s fair usage maybe time to get a replacement ? Was that from usage wearing or was that a file and re notch job ?

I’m honestly surprised that there’s two 45 revolvers matched penetration. I was expecting the 45 Auto to be slower considering that 45 auto wasn’t meant to originally to be in a revolver. I thought the round would be at least be slightly slower but holy shit. I can’t even figure out how 45ACP *isn’t* even a little slower, I mean I’m impressed. I assume it has to do with the barrel length difference between a 1911 and this 45ACP revolver but idk.

Boomer fudd calibers? They’ve been around a lot longer than you and probably will be around for longer than your kids. Pretty good accomplishment I think.

The knots in the 4x4 are probably causing inconsistencies in penetration.
@jamesmarkov9570

Might be economical and more consistent to find 2x4 pieces without knots and screw them together. That makes penetration examination easier to see vs sawing them apart.
