Been saying it for years so i dont mind saying it again: Civil Defense is some of the best self defense ammo on the market today. Insane velocity on the .45! I was expecting about 2000 fps but NOT 2331! That 10mm was almost 180 fps over advertised too! Thank you very much for this test!

It’s really not. Velocity does no good if the bullet didn’t stay intact and it doesn’t penetrate. You can’t reinvent the wheel with pistol ballistics with old calibers. Carry HSTs, gold dots, critical duty etc over this gimmick. If something doesn’t expand to at least 12-14 inches in ballistics gel it’s a nonstarter. It’s literally the reason the FBI decided to switch calibers because a bullet that doesn’t properly penetrate will not incapacitate. There’s a reason these things “veer outside the block” constantly. The same reason they don’t expand. This doesn’t even factor in hitting bone as gel doesn’t simulate that at all. It’s too weak of a round and too light to work. There’s a reason no law enforcement or anyone reputable use these.

@cosyfoot7867 the fbi went through their bs with penetration because of just one atypical shot through the shoulder blade. Even if the round hit the heart it wouldn't have made a difference because it had no velocity at that point and heart shots don't incapacitate as quickly as most would think. You can look at police shooting videos online and see how often HSTs Gold Dots and Critical Duty actually fail. What would switching calibers do for them? They've switched calibers numerous times just to go back to 9mm. Marshall and Sanow took street data and found that 8.5-12 inches of penetration was the best on the street and stopping power dropped off after about 14 inches. They also referenced a study from the US Army that found 15 inches or more penetration correlated to through and through torso shots on the street at a rate of about 70%. Fragmenting bullets also did the best in their tests as well as in Strasbourg. Yeah I prefer animal test data or meat tests to just gel personally.

I like that manufacturers are exploring different ways to deliver energy on target. I am not sold on fast and very light, but it's hard to argue with those energy numbers. It would be informative to line up your tests from very light to very heavy and see the ft/lbs verses penatration graph. Good testing as usual, thanks.
@randyjustin4408

It’s dependent on many factors but tbh if you compare a 850 fps 230 gr slug to this, it’s definitely better at stopping a target

That was some crazy energy dumping from both rounds. If that Civil Defense ammo has a similar performance out of a shorter barrel and functions reliably in a 1911, carrying it in an Officer model it could be an appealing choice because the ammo weighs almost nothing. Better yet, it would make a M&P Shield 45 an ultra-light carry gun option

Good test, AZ! This stuff is impressive but I wonder what the actual application might be. While I do like the light-for-caliber bullets, in my case it's the 10mm fluted bullets, which usually penetrate 16 - 18". These Liberty bullets would be ok unless you to encounter a bad guy of, let's say, considerable bulk. Ok, let's just call it what it is, really fat! While a 40 or 45 cal hole in a bad guy is never a bad thing, in the case of our overweight attacker we end up with a massive flesh wound! Ok, even a flesh wound involving this much energy is nothing to sneeze at, when it comes to stopping him, it's still a flesh wound! Thus it could take multiple hits to truly stop him from doing you harm. I suppose that if a person were really worried about over penetration (I am not in least worried about it) where these are more applicable but otherwise, I see little use for them myself. YMMV, as always. Carry whatever let's you sleep soundly at night! Cheers, jc

Most of us aim at center-mass. Obese or not, there's very little subcutaneous fat there and certainly not enough to stop a 2,500 fps 60gr bullet from entering the thoracic cavity.

IMHO I consider these rounds to be ideal for smaller critters dogs etc. where over penetration was a concern. The obvious concern for barrier penetration would be a deal breaker for me as far as SD use.
@TERMINAL-BALLISTICS
@TERMINAL-BALLISTICS 5 сағат бұрын
Dogs lol .... At 2,300-2,500 fps, the Civil Defense rounds have no issue with barrier penetration. They slice through IIIA armor like butter and they pass through car doors without issue. There's some related footage on the interwebz if you're interested.

I've had weird results from the 10mm of this round with my chronograph, I think it has a lot more debris coming out of the barrel compared to other ammo. Out of my XDmE, I got anywhere from 1390 to 2312 fps,🤷‍♂ but out of the Banshee it is more stable in the low 2700's and out of the LC Carbine it was around 3000 fps. It does put on one of the best shows with pineapple I have seen.🫡 I posted a short video of shooting a pineapple with the LC Carbine and Banshee with this round.👍
