No idea when we became this throw away culture. My tv is about 12 years old, a plasma I bought on clearance from Sears! Still looks and works great. You do not need to upgrade anything! Cars, phones, tv's, clothes....don't give in to advertising!

I totally agree with you. Sadly it is all about consumerism I don't agree with expending money in order to upgrade just because a new cell is out or a new TV, etc ... Why people do that? I still have the same TV from 15 years ago. Still works great! I don't have any subscriptions so I just stream Pluto tv or Tubi and I can enjoy watching movies without any problems.

Hey annieway35 very smart comment! I bought an NEC 32 inch TV in 1987. Finally died in 2015 for 28 years no problems then it died. Bought a 1996 Impala SS new, now 28 years old 185,000 miles still purring like a kitten bc I took care of it. Like your thinking!

Being Aussie, we never used a dryer. We only dry clothes on the line outside. If it's raining we just dry inside on a clothes "horse" a line dryer. I only ever use home brand laundry and half the amount. Drying the clothes outside is better for the environment. I don't use paper towels. I went to the council pool and showed my student card and got in for $2. I always shop the reduced section , I don't use fabric softener, (you can use vinegar instead). I dont have a dishwasher.

I love this video!!! My mom and I are low income (I'm on disability, and my mom is a senior and about to retire) and we live together. We are learning how to save money. We are buying food on clearance, buying off brands, drying our clothes on a drying rack, hand washing our clothes (The Scrubba), not eating out, using solar/hand crank generators, flashlights, lanterns, fans. We have solar panels and solar battery chargers. We use USB & rechargeable batteries. We use a solar cooker and kettle to cook & boil water. I don't wear makeup or use many beauty products. I am saving for an electric bike & electric scooter since I don't own a car. For entertainment we read, play board games, video games, table top games, talk, go swimming at the local pool, watch a movie or tv show Roku, watch KZbin videos, or free games on our phones. Life is good, but a frugal life is better.

My best friend and I, both retired and weary beyond words at prices being raised by every service, grocery, etc., decided this week to set April aside as a spending moratorium. Neither of us will spend money on anything not necessary, like bills, groceries, etc. We are both very excited to see what is leftover at the end of the month. We met for lunch yesterday as we won't be doing that after Sunday. And we will record every cent that goes out. It's a game, now! Wish us luck...we are both seasoned shoppers...

My parents use some kind of bag that would normally be thrown out (say, a non recyclable very old baggie) and put all their "yucky smelly stuff" in that particular bag, leaving the rest of the say, "non offensive" garbage in the regular bag. It's a pain quite honestly, but I can see being able to reuse it that way. But I'm sure each region has rules about loose garbage, and throwing it out without a bag may not be allowed. In that case, creativity may apply...old dog food bags, big plastic coverings from something purchased, etc. That's the only thing I can think of 🤷🏼‍♀️ I make things overcomplicating as it is so I think my family would kick me out if I started doing that.

I definitely picked up a couple good tips that I hadn't thought of thank you! I live about as Frugal as can be though. My total bills for the month run roughly $125 and I have no house payments or car payments, heat strictly with wood from my 20 acres, hunt and fish regularly , and even though I live 6 or 8 miles from the nearest blacktop road I still only put about 1,800 miles on one of my vehicles and a little over 2500 on the truck total for the whole year. I plan my trips very carefully and run multiple errands at one time so I'm not running willy-nilly. Both vehicles I purchased used with approximately 41 or 42,000 miles on them and one I've had for 13 years and just broke 78,000 , my truck which I've had 15 years just broke 100,000 both of which I paid cash for when I bought them ,and they'll likely last me for many more years . I also downsized from an almost 2,000 ft house to 695 square foot house two years ago which has made an amazing difference in my finances since I live on Social Security income. Electric vehicles or bicycles are really not an option for me living here at the High Mountain Homestead , but I am in the process of doing a solar system to run my house and will be running my new garage once it's completed. Even though last month's light bill was just slightly less than $34 for the house , which was actually a bit higher than normal since I was using a bunch of power tools to build a wood shed this last month. I'll be switching to solar, but will still remain on the grid sense solar will be primarily be for my garage as it will likely be my biggest energy hog due to all my shop tools, welders and air compressor. I do however have three classic cars ,two of which are absolute gas Hogs and full-blown hot rods so I guess I do have my vices!! LOL! But then 2 of those only get driven very rarely and my 1972 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia is under restoration at the moment. I generally only use them to go to local car shows , occasional trips to the racetrack and for the occasional car club Cruises, so what I save on daily and monthly expenses I splurge on driving my hot rods during the summer months. Which usually only amounts to,two or three thousand miles total for the year. What's the old saying? " man cannot live by bread alone " so yes I definitely do spoil myself on occasion when it comes to my hot rods and it doesn't really break the bank when I go out and blow a hundred bucks on fuel for the day! Even OLD kids have to play sometimes!! LOL

Great video! I'm retired living on social security for the most part. MY apartment rent went up so I cancelled my cable tv subscription which was about $120 a month. And just have internet for $63 a month. And I have a Roku TV which gives me hundreds of channels. I also have a analog TV converter box and antenna which gives me the main TV channels free. Most of the TV shows I watch are old reruns and I can watch them on the analog TV. But I do need the internet. Although, what did we do before the internet? My cell phone only costs $35 a month. My car will be paid off in a month or so, and then I will finally be debt free!. My apartment rent is the highest expense I have. And apartments are expensive these days. Thanks.

Can you explain how you use trash bags over and over? My trash is wet and stinky and goes in a bin for pick up at the curb. Thanks for another great video. ** Edited to explain that here in NJ merchants are not permitted to give out bags. The consumer must bring their own sacks. The high end stores do give customers lovely totes but I would never shop in those type of stores. A lot of folks just wheel their cart out to their car and unload in trunk. That was my confusion on the trash bag question. Also, we no longer compost due to the many animals that wander through here. They are known to make quite a mess. Thanks to all who answered my question.**
@AbbeyStorm
@AbbeyStorm 2 жыл бұрын
We dump the little bags into the main trash bag and then reuse them unless there's literally poop or blood on the bag. Keeping a compost bin for food helps reduce wet trash and its good for the environment. Honestly I don't currently have the bandwidth in my life to keep up with composting.. so I give all my food waste to a friend who feeds it to her chickens. I keep it in a container in the fridge and she comes to get it three days a week.

I use grocery bags for trash and toss them in the garbage can as is. We only use regular large trash bags about once a month. I live with others who just like to use a large trash can. I don’t make a big deal about it because we get our bags at a janitorial supply store for 10 cents a piece. 😁. But, I still don’t want to use them unnecessarily.

@@yellowstonekv959 Would you happen to be with ATT? (We're in Milwaukee, Wis metro area.) They have terrible customer service, but their Internet is good. I haven't called to see about getting slower Internet for cheaper as the Princess recommends, because I don't want to go through the pain of waiting on hold forever, being lied to, then trying to straighten it out the next month when you get your bill and everyone has amnesia. But, as you say, there isn't much of a choice in our market. You are getting "channels" with your Wi-Fi? ATT is always trying to upsell you with a "package deal". Of course, one service (Internet in our case) is always going to be cheaper than two (Internet + Cable), no matter how they package it.

Excellent ideas. New subscriber. Years ago I felt sick when I subtracted my fixed monthly expenses from my take home pay and couldn't understand where the rest of it all had gone. I'd be a millionaire if I'd done that in my 20's. What about baking your own bread? I love my bread machine and the ingredients for a 1lb loaf comes to about 50cents but I have no idea how much power a loaf uses to bake in it.

I wrote this above to another poster but I thought I'd put it here for you: "I don't reuse my trash bags because I use my 25# dog food bags that come in regularly (I'd have a storage problem if I saved them), but I could reuse them - because I don't put organic material or wet things like food or scraps in there. It can take me a month or two to fill a bag so I don't want anything in there that would attract bugs or would start to smell eventually. Don't know if that's how she does it, but I thought I'd give you my solution."

I have stopped using paper products which is a big thing for me I love paper towels and only use them occasionally but I want to start watering down my shampoo and conditioner that's excellent idea I had no idea you could even do that and I do use less laundry soap than I used to cuz I have heard it works just as good with half the amount I admire you so much and thanks for your videos that's very helpful.

Black out curtains, using them since I could remember. Small fridge check Home made Iced tea, not coffee, check. Clover lawn, not turf. Very low maintenance and it helps pollinators. Check. Clothes shop only for special occasions. Water, one of the best ways to save money. Diluting liquid soaps adding a minimal 1/4 of water to it. Shampoo, dish and laundry detergents. Laundry detergent lasts me around 6 months. Shampoo/conditioner twice a week. 6 months. I use a dish washer, at least every other day because I absolutely hate doing dishes. And if you do, like me, never use the pods. Those things are flipping expensive. Dry powder works just as well, and it won't "break the dishwasher". That's only if you put too much in or don't wait for the cycle to end. All my lights outside are solar, and yet have to master bringing it inside. I'm getting there.

In the past I have had roommates. Most of the time it has been hell. Now that I am 55 It would be hard even though I have contemplated it in this current economy. My experience with roommates is that more water and electric ends up getting used as well as things end up getting broken, which cost to be fixed. It is not worth it unless maybe a little retired grandma or something.

I hang all of my clothes as well. I am blessed that I have a lot of deck railing that I use as well as drying racks that I have had for decades. In inclement weather, I just bring my drying racks inside. It just requires a bit more preplanning, but it works wonders. I also am a frugal shopper. I preplan my weekly food needs, shop at grocery stores that sell off brands or seconds...save 1/4 of our income, an am 100% debt free, including not having a mortgage. I still do all of my bill/accounting the old fashioned way with paper and pencil...I am an old soul, I guess.

For the winter, we have rods around the house to hang clothes inside--like the shower curtain rod, rods for curtains used in place of closet doors, a rod hidden behind a door, and a rod across the back-door alcove. I just hang everything, including sheets, on hangers and hang them to dry on one of these rods. Underwear and socks typically get put on drying racks.

@@gdgirouard Soaking helps get things cleaner. Baking soda or washing soda or borax are great additions when reducing detergent and will help with odors. Essential oil would definitely help, but it's not cheap. Use white vinegar in the final rinse. You can also spray a 50/50 water/white vinegar under the arms before washing (maybe add essential oil to that). Also, hanging clothes outside helps. Otherwise ammonia is a powerful cleaner. Anything that survives ammonia, deserves to live.

I drink free courthouse coffee (I do pay for the little flavored creamers to keep at my desk).
