Always watch the videos to the absolute end. TFE adds clips of interviews with people from the actual story to most videos. Others have him making personal commentary, usually funny or sarcastic, as he shuts down his gear. Worth watching!!

Henry Elrod "Hammerin' Hank", the pilot at the beginning of the story received the Medal of Honor posthumously since he was KIA on Wake. He was defending a position and covering his men when mortally wounded.

Sorry, don’t know the names but the dude on the left stated by surrendering, many lives were saved. The way the POWs were treated, they would have been better off dying in battle. There’s a great Wake Island documentary where former POWs stated if they could go back in time, they would never have surrendered. 98 construction workers were kept on Wake to perform forced labor. In 1943, Captain Shigematsu Sakaibara ordered all of the construction workers killed. They were taken to the northern end of the island, blindfolded and executed with a machine gun. One of the prisoners (whose name has never been discovered) escaped, apparently returning to the site to carve the message "98 US PW 5-10-43" on a large coral rock near where the victims had been hastily buried in a mass grave. The unknown construction worker was recaptured, and Sakaibara personally beheaded him with a katana. The inscription on the rock can still be seen and is a Wake Island landmark.

As a USMC Veteran, I totally agree that Marines are a very special group of people. Harnessed mayhem is about the politest thing I can claim, and it's well deserved! Once unleashed, there is nothing we're not willing to face/attend, and even if it takes all of us, we're going to leave an impression. Leonidas and his famous Greek warriors are a perfect comparison!

At the beginning of WWII, the U.S. military was contracting out construction projects to private companies. Unfortunately, civilian construction workers were under orders to not fight back when attacked. Under international law, they could be considered guerrilla fighters and might be executed when captured. The Naval Construction Force (Seabees - CB for Construction Battalions), was born on March 5, 1942, to meet the Navy’s need for construction workers who were also trained (by the Marine Corp) to fight while involved in building advanced bases and airfields in combat zones., Due to the need for seasoned skilled tradesmen physical standards were waived and they accepted men up to age 50 (or who could successfully lie to pass for 50) with the average age of a Seabee being 37.

It's a fantastic story. The defenders of Wake Island were simply amazing, but the fact is they would have lost by attrition over time. The aftermath of the Wake story sad, in that two officers, Devereux and Cunningham had hard feelings between them after they returned home because of the way the defense of Wake Island was misreported. Cunningham was actually in command, but in press accounts Devereux got much of the acclaim.

Marine doctrine is every marine is a rifle ma 1st. Artillery, medics, chow hall cooks, ur a rifle man 1st. Just how they get down. Utmost respect.

Fun fact the US got the idea for the Social Security Administration from the small mustache crew, as their files had a nine digit number as well and were later tattooed on a certain demographic. That's why your SSI# has three section, the first three digits are your AREA # the next two are your GROUP # and the last four are your SERIAL #, which served the same function as the small mustache party on files dating back to 1933-34, SSI came about in 1936.
