In the early days of our presidential elections, the winner became President, runner up became VP. Needless to say, they didn't often see eye to eye, and there was no official loyalty. So an election challenge by the VP was pretty much expected. Because of this, it was changed to loser goes home, winner picks their own VP, which stands to this day.

He said that the Mameluke sword was the sword used by the Marine Corps, and it's true for officers. The enlisted uses the cavalry sword style. Another fact about the battle of Montezuma concerns the origin of the red stripe wore by Corporals and above. During the battle in Mexico City, all of the Corporals and above were killed, and the battle was continued and won by Lance Corporals and below. That's why the red stripe is referred to as the "Blood Stripe".

Those Navy crewmen were sweating their bodies off. I asked one of the crewmen who was a Female. (mind you they are dressed is actual 1900 US Navy attire, (wool), Aren't you hot?) She said>>>"Sir, it is my privilege to serve aboard US Constitution". I learned later in the US Constitution Museum; you are granted to serve aboard the US Constitution. You must be the best. I also learned that US Constitution IS an Active Navy Ship! It sails completely the entire globe, every year! Every American needs to see the US Constitution! One last thing... the Constitution looks like NEW! You could your lunch off those wooden decks. Makes me proud of the Navy!

There are plenty of books about the wars of 1812. There was the War in Europe against Napoleon that kept the British more concerned than fighting a minor war with the US over the invasion of York in Ontario Canada. In 1814 with the defeat of Napoleon the British freeded troops that were sent to the East Coast of the US. The British entered Washington burned several federal governments buildings and burned down the White House. Also continued to the port of Baltimore and attacked Ft. McHenry where the National Anthem was written during the battle.

In the early days of the US, the second place candidate became vice president. This was always the person from the other party. Which is why Jefferson ran against Adams almost immediately. For many years both men despised each other, but they ended up reconciling in their old age and both men died on the same day July 4, 1826. The 50th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence which Jefferson wrote and Adams edited.

There were no "political parties" in the first election under the Constitution. It was a forgone conclusion that Washington was going to be POTUS under the new government. They asked John Adams, one of the writers of the Declaration of Independence and leaders during the Revolution to serve as VP. HELL, JEFFERSON WAS SECRETARY OF STATE. In fact, Washington in his farewell address stated "However [political parties] may now and then answer popular ends, they are likely in the course of time and things, to become potent engines, by which cunning, ambitious, and unprincipled men will be enabled to subvert the power of the people and to usurp for themselves the reins of government, destroying afterwards the very engines which have lifted them to unjust dominion." One of the ships that was a part of this is still around today. The USS Constitution which is the oldest floating commissioned warship in the world. I was aboard a few years ago and got a flag flown on the ship and a cool metal coin thing. The ship really is worth a visit if you are in Boston. The ship scared a British vessel into backing down from a fight and it managed to completely disable a British ship in battle without taking any damage. The cannonballs shot at it bounced off the sides doing no damage leading to its nickname Old Ironsides.

The whole nine yard actually is derived from a phase fighter pilots in WW2. The amount of rounds held in the wings were on a belt feed design, which we laid out flat measured 9 yards so to give them the whole nine yards initially meant that a fighter pilot had fired all his rounds at an enemy.

Okay, the deal with the president and the vice president back when America was founded was that the loser of the previous election became vice president so essentially you had the presidents opposition as vice president. It was only later that they chose a running mate to become vice president alongside their president.

The War of 1812 happened largely (if I recall my US History correctly) because Britain was blockading ships from supplying France during Napoleonic Wars. Because France was helpful to the colonies in their war against Britain for our independence, we were helping Napoleon with supplies. So US declared war on Britain while Britain was engaged in a European war by attacking British strongholds in Canada. This provoked Britain into also attacking the US while simultaneously fighting France. It ended up being a war with no real winners or losers. The only thing it really did was show the US wasn't a push over. We beat the British once and held them off a second time, which at the time was the greatest military in the world.
@DemitriVladMaximov
@DemitriVladMaximov 7 күн бұрын
It wasn't the blockade. It was that the British were taking US sailors and forcing them to serve in the British Navy in what was called impressment. The British refused to acknowledge the sovereignty of the US and the rights of US citizens.

This reminds me about the time that Somalian pirates held the captain of a U.S. flagged ship hostage. (April 2009, Maersk Alabama) and the Somalians *actually* thought they were going to "negotiate" with the U.S. Navy. When I heard that on the news, I thought, "They *REALLY* think the U.S. Navy is going to negotiate with them??? They just bit off more than they can chew."

It's not uncommon for a former vice president to run for president. The difference is that the sitting president, in this case, had only served one of his potential two terms.

Prior to passage of the 12th Amendment in 1803, whomever received the most votes was President, and the runner-up was Vice President. So, Thomas Jefferson actively campaigning against John Adams isn't surprising, as they had always been political rivals.

The Barbary wars were not exactly the US’s strongest showing in a war. Basically the entire point was to stop piracy along the coast of Africa except it didn’t exactly work out. The problem was we didn’t actually have a real navy at the time and hence we knew nothing about sailing. The battles were fierce just when we did kill a well known pirate captain it wouldn’t matter as another infamous pirate would take their place in quick succession. It was a revolving door of pirates and it just wouldn’t stop. Literally it went on for four years before America withdrew from the area and found a much better route to get cargo to where it needed to go. Basically we left the Barbary coast alone and the pirates never bothered again. Literally it shoot a few guns withdraw and do it again at every battle.

We ended up paying tribute cause Yusuf was gonna retreat to a palace in the middle of the desert with the american prisoners. Attacking this forttress. We had no way to bring artillery to that site and not nearly enough marines to get the job done. Let alone supply them deep in the desert. This also meant we went back on our deal with Yusuf's brother and left him high and dry.
