I agree. I've shot both 454 and 460 from my 5 inch 460 mag and the 454 has a much sharper recoil. Of course bullet weights make a big difference, but when they're the same the 454 is sharper.

@@StoneofElohim It hurts more. It feels like it kicks back and returns much more quickly. Like a quick jolt, versus 460 is more of a push. Honestly it varies a lot by loading and platform. Shooting buffalo bore 180 grain 357 mag in my wood handle S&W 6 inch hurts more than the 200 grain FTX 460 mag with the rubber grips. A 45 colt +P just about broke my thumb when shooting it out of an old Ruger Vaquero with the plow-handle grips. In my limited experience, if you were to load the same grain bullet at the same speeds, I don't know for sure- but I would guess, that the 454 would hurt more. It has to do with the case volume and how quickly or not the powder can burn. If you have a buddy with one I would suggest trying both out. But again, the 454 just seems more joltier to me. At the same time, when I go over 300 grain bullets in the 460 it starts to actually hurt.

Has to do with the pressure curve of the powder being burnt. How much pressure does it generate and how quickly does it reach that peak? That's what creates the difference in feel.

Given the same gun and bullet, recoil differences will be in the powder: a "fast burn" formula (designed for short-barreled, high-strength guns) will be snappier than a "progressive burn" formula that achieves its best potential out of a longer barrel.

T.hose werent hot rounds, the rounds I use in my 454 cause the barrel to rise straight up in the air at a 90 degree angle Try using Underwood ammo in that beast

They were standard 200 grain hornady ftx in the 460 and some 250 grain 454. The barrels didn’t rise because of the weights of the guns. Both are roughly 4.9lbs

@@bnsf9161 Yes I know they were "standard", they werent up to specs like the Underwoods. I have the Ruger Super Redhawk with 7.5 inch barrel, it is also heavy, their wasnt much vertical climb with yours not because of the weight, but because you were using anemic ammo

My friend, with respect, the super red hawk you are describing weighs 3.3 lbs. each of these gins weighs 4.9 lbs. They weigh 50% more than a super red hawk. I found the ammo we used - the 454 was a 300 gr XTP Mag from hornady 1650fps. An 250 gr underwood runs 1650. These rounds were in fact hotter than that of you take into account that the bullet weighed 50 more grains. The 460 was a 200 gr sst at 2200 FPS at the muzzle. Good day my friend.

The 460 was hornady 200 ftx and I don’t remember what the 454 was. It was 10 years ago. It was full power whatever it was.

Do not be fooled... these are VERY heavy guns. That makes them very shootable. A model 29 44magnum with Winchester supreme rounds is a formidable gun. There is a big difference. Nothing to be afraid of but you need to understand to hold on to them but let them do there thing. Jerry Miculek has some great videos about handling recoil on big guns.

@@bnsf9161 I just sold a 71/2" Redhawk, actually traded on a Python! The Ruger was just too big, unless it's the Alaskan. Sold my 629s , 4" ans 8 3/8". Then finally my 6 1/2" early 29. Too expensive! My ww 296 powered magnum 240 gr. SJLFP caused all Smiths to counter rotate the cylinder in recoil. Now I use it as a cabrine load. The 29 is a light piece of ordnance for some hot loads and recoil is abusive, blast gives me a headache . 😃

Do both revolvers weigh the same? If not, you just proved nothing about felt recoil. The weight of the platform has a significant effect on felt recoil. A short barrel SP101 firing a hot .38 Special will feel like it has a heck of a lot more recoil than a long barreled Redhawk firing a .357 magnum.

Yes they weigh the same. Testing felt recoil is testing felt recoil. Of course it has to do with the weight of the Gun.

Ok. I have to say something now. You're gorgeous. I owned a .454 Raging Bull and the recoil was surreal. The bullet/weight of gun,, BLA BLA BLA all mean something. But the shape of the grip handle is everything. This hasn't been mentioned. I now own a Ruger Redhawk and shoot the same heavy loads and it is a baby compared to the raging bull .454/w/porting! Taurus made a nice gun but totally missed it on the angle of the grip. Nothing worse than a bunch of men trying to point things out to a woman that clearly knows what she's doing. .460 has much harder recoil. Not sure where all these experts (who obviously don't own either) are getting the idea the .454 is more violent and citing "powder" charge and "bullet" weight...because the .460 has more powder and case length...and you can shoot the same bullet weights if desired...from the same gun with those two rounds. (.454=.452, .460=.451 diameter) The old cor-bon loads were probably the most violent I've fired through it. I would like to try some buffalo bore.

I have shot a 5 in barrel .454 with a 300gr bullet and I owned a .500 S&W with a 8 3/8 in barrel and shot a 440gr buffalo bore and I have to say the felt recoil was way more violent for the .454. Twists the wrist a lot more than the 440 gr .500.

The recoil is not mild at all. I've shot at least 20 full size .460 hornady bullets out of it. It hurts your palm after a while. Both cartridges are extremely powerful.
