It depends on the bullet. LOTS of bullets expand at subsonic speeds, but these were clearly not designed for that. Since most .50 bullets are intended for .50 AE and .500 Magnum, which throw 350-grainers at 1300+ and 1800+ fps respectively, using these bullets in the subsonic Special was either lazy or stupid on the ammo maker's part.

The .500 Special is basically a fatter Colt .45, about same muzzle velocity but with a projectile that's ~50gr heavier. I've always liked it, it won't blow out your ears on the range, and for target shooting up to 20 yards you really can't tell a difference in accuracy, except there's >50% less recoil and you can get away with using regular safety muffs w/o plugs.
@Bacteriophagebs2 жыл бұрын
Standard-pressure .44 magnum fires a 355-grain bullet at 950-1050 fps, so .500 Special is right on par with .44 magnum. .45 Colt +P is almost exactly the same as .44 Magnum, and you can get 360-grain loads that go 1100+ fps. Regular .45 Colt is the same as .45 ACP and will only throw 230 grains at under 1100 fps. The problem is that those bullets were clearly made to expand at supersonic velocities like you get from .50 AE and .500 Magnum, so the .500 Special just couldn't make them pop. Bad design on the manufacturer's part, but I doubt there are any .50 bullets made for such low velocities on the market.

According to S&W, Matt funded the creation of the 500 special, so he could specifically bring ppl to the range and give them a gun loaded with 500 magnum, then he would shoot it with 500 special and play it off like the recoil was nothing to him. 100% True story.

It's one of the most versatile rounds, there's rounds that are more manageable than others that don't seem like extreme overkill for certain applications, but some pack enough punch to take down a bull, they're no joke. 45 ACP is still going to be best for use against humans overall for most people but definitely isn't nearly enough for other applications. I think the difference on the food service sized cans was primarily due to the fact that the can was strong enough to withstand the hydrostatic shock of the .500 special. If you had used smaller, thinner cans, like soda cans, or 2 liter soda bottles, you'd definitely see a nice big splatter from both rounds. But yea, those cans are designed to be stacked in pallets and shipped stacked in the back of a box truck, they can handle a lot of fucking pressure in both compression and expansion, and the corrugated sides and lids only help to reinforce that further. Now, that said, the .500 mag is still a much more powerful cartridge for sure. what is that like 30-40% more powder capacity in the magnum, vs the special?

I suspect that the reason for this huge difference between the .500 Special and the .500 Magnum is the fact that the .500 Special is an FMJ and the .500 Magnum is a JHP.
@corbinpowell1282 жыл бұрын
Frank, I think you got a good point. But we all have admit that 500 Magnum still will deliver more energy than 500 Special. Even if it’s a JHP in both calibers hitting the same type of target.

Hollow points are always gonna deliver more damage because the bullet is getting bigger in diameter as it passes through the target.

My ex father in law had a S&W .500 MAG with the 3" barrel. We loaded many dif rounds for it. We've shot it each well over 1k rounds. We LOVED it ! We were shooting pretty accurate at 70 yards once used to the recoil without the anticipation of its power. Our buddies would always back out from shooting. Limitless America in Washugal, WA has the exact same gun. Used for $1149. I've been looking for every excuse not to get it but after watching this then, I'm getting up early to go get it tomorrow! Our loads where Star line brass, cci large rifle primers, hot loads where 54.2 grain or 52.4 grain of Unique or Hodge 110 powder and light loads where 46.2 to 48 grain powder. Bullets where always Hornady XTP 350 grain. I'm so excited to go get this thing tomorrow that I'm not sure I'll sleep tonight! Awesome vids as always brother! Keep them coming!

The 500 special is still running right at standard 44 mag energy levels. I just feel like the bullet is pulled straight from the 500 mag line and is designed for 500-1000+ fps higher impact velocities. With a bullet actually designed to open up, as it clearly did not do at all going through 4' of water, it would actually be a very viable round. The 44 mag doesn't have any issues anchoring everything it's been used against. I doubt the same energy with .071" wider hole would do any worse.

If you're using bullets designed for the 500 magnum in the 500 special loading that's probably why you're seeing so little energy transfer. Those bullets are designed to expand at 1,500 fps, not 1,000 fps. Same sort of thing happens with 10mm auto, most loadings use bullets designed for the much more popular .40 s&w, and the extra speed causes much less controlled expansion. Anyway since the .500 special is so uncommon I'm betting that they just used a bullet designed with .500 magnum velocities in mind.

With regards to the magnum ammo and the water jug, it might be that it simply exploded from the water resistance. I remember Mythbusters did a test along those lines back in the day, and supersonic ammo (I think they used 5.56, but whatever) just disintegrates within 3 feet. The 500 special may have lost enough velocity to avoid the catastrophic destruction like that.
@Bacteriophagebs2 жыл бұрын
That depends a LOT on the bullet construction. The 5.56 FMJ used by the military tumbles after impact, and the 62-grain stuff disintegrates when it does so if its speed is over 2800 fps (give or take a hundred fps or so) when that happens. You're on the right track, though. Those bullets were clearly intended to expand at supersonic speeds, so the subsonic special rounds can't make them expand. It's a trade-off between making a round expand at low velocities versus keeping it from disintegrating at high velocities. A lot of modern bullets can manage to do both, but there are limits, and these might not be the best-made bullets.
@ericmacfarlane42492 жыл бұрын
Pretty sure they used .50 BMG, too. I can’t remember what else, but that one broke apart pretty quickly.
@Bacteriophagebs2 жыл бұрын
@@ericmacfarlane4249 Yeah, it's been a long time since I saw that episode, but the Mythbusters were not very good at guns. They almost never said what type of bullets they were using, let alone the weight, for any of their experiments. They really needed a gun expert to help them out. For example, they had to revisit the Sgt. Carlos Hathcock "bullet through the scope" myth because they used a completely wrong kind of scope and possibly hunting ammo rather than FMJ. They then used the right scope, but used AP ammo, which Hathcock did not use, so they screwed it up twice. But even if they used the right ammo, they were shooting much too close, when the bullet is still yawing and, as you noted, bullets do different things when they hit at different speeds.
@jameskazd99512 жыл бұрын
i dont even think the 500 special expanded, hollowpoints tend to be a bit unreliable on expansion under 1200 ft per second, 45 acp also has this issue
@Bacteriophagebs2 жыл бұрын
@@jameskazd9951 They didn't. Those bullets were clearly made for .50 AE and .500 Magnum velocities of 1300+ fps. However, bullets can expand reliably at any speed if they're made for that speed. To use your example, .45 ACP only has that issue with old or cheap hollowpoints. By the mid-'90s, there were plenty of hollowpoints that could expand reliably, and any brand-name defensive round will do it today. The people perpetuating the "pistol bullets don't expand reliably" myth are people who've never seen a good defensive round or the same people who use FMJs and just want to justify their belief that ".45 ball makes 'em all fall." I had an acquaintance who asked me to hold his Glock 26 (subcompact) 9mm for him for a while. When I checked it, the mags he had in the case with it were loaded with FMJ. When I returned it, I recommended he switch to literally anything else if he wanted to use it for defense, and he gave me the line that JHPs wouldn't expand from a short barrel anyway, so FMJs were just as good. I had to show him videos of gel tests before he believed me that there were _tons_ of 9mm rounds that would expand just fine from a Glock 26. Turns out he'd been told that by the guy at the gun store who sold it to him! Since he wasn't a gun expert, and he assumed the guy at the store was, he simply took the guy's word for it.

Cool difference I learned from demo ranches channel when it was talking about 500 magnum and 50 ae. When it comes to soft targets like watermelons. The slower round makes it further because the round doesn’t deforestation as much on impact. However the faster one obviously dumps more energy into target Edit: and I get to see it again proved when he gets to the water jugs. So there’s yalls example of you wanted one

It is a amazing the difference in terminal ballistics you get from the same 350 grain bullet when it is moving below it's expansion velocity vs when it is moving above its expansion velocity. There is still way more energy in that 500 special than in a hot 9mm or 45 defensive load, the difference is that those rounds were designed with bullets that expand at 1000 fps, while the 350gr 500 cal bullet was designed for magnum velocites > 1200 fps. The 500 special is still no joke and would have looked much more impressive and a tad more comparable if it had been loaded with a non-magnum 50 cal XTP bullet, where it should expand at velocities down to ~800 fps.
@hondolane31252 жыл бұрын
This. It was "only" a 300 grain bullet in the special, but it still was probably designed for expansion in the 300 grain magnum load. The special has way more oomph than any 9's and .45 ACP, and while it's about 200 fps slower, is also 25% heavier than a 240 grain .44 magnum, which as we all know, will blow your head clean off. That same load with a purpose designed bullet would be a wicked defensive load, you know, for when you want to carry your 72 ounce revolver under shorts and a t-shirt.

Even with just JHP, the reaction of liquids as projectile velocities increase is pretty interesting. More energy gets dumped upon impact. I've seen .22 lower velocity rounds penetrate more water than higher velocity in some cases.

This really makes me want to get a snub nose 500 special. Actually, I'm pretty sure you'd have to have one custom made. Not that I couldn't handle a magnum, it would just be pretty dope to have a 500 with a small, light frame and a much shorter cylinder. Plus, you could still get some pretty good hand loads with some expanding projectiles. Maybe that should be something that gets looked into next: optimizing 500 special rounds for performance. If nothing else, it would be interesting to see.

Get a Ruger Super Redhawk Alaskan if you want a snubby super-magnum. .454 is much more powerful than .500 special. In fact, .500 special is less powerful than .50 AE and is right on par with .44 magnum. You might as well buy a .44.

@@Bacteriophagebs I'm aware, but it wasn't anything about power or even practicality. It's just about having a one-off badass gun that serves no real purpose other than having it. I've had some really nice revolvers including a custom shop S&W 357 and corth. My single biggest factor for buying a gun is utility so everything I have has a very specific purpose. I would just love to have one highly impractical gun for no reason other than having it. But if I were looking for a powerful, reliable hand cannon, the Redhawk I'm .454 Casull would definitely be the choice. And don't burn my britches, but I would likely be more inclined to grab a Raging Bull 2.5" snub. I know, I know...Taurus. But I've owned several Taurus guns and their customer service and warranty is top notch. In fact, the gun I currently own with the highest round count is actually a Taurus TX-22. I've got around 6,000 rounds on it, more than half suppressed, and it still runs like a champ. Actually, my very first gun (that I still shoot to this day) is a Savage MKII with probably about 10K. But, the other guns are only lower round counts because I have a habit of trading/selling before they go over 3K. Weird tangent, sorry. But yeah this is only referring to a gun I'd want for funsies.
@Bacteriophagebs2 жыл бұрын
@@DrewishAF I have nothing against Taurus. They're fine guns. Well, the revolvers are. One of these days I'll get a Raging Judge. If you want a badass, impractical gun, why not just get an actual .500 mag and lighten the hell out of it? Then shoot light loads in it like it's no big deal, but load the full-power stuff when someone else wants to shoot it.
