I don’t think the shaft breaking is a lack of maintenance. It could have been a small hairline crack that split apart when Andy crashed into that massive wave of a wall that even washed out the captain’s wheelhouse windows. Hitting that wave could definitely snap that shaft if it had a weak spot that developed 🤷‍♂️

Andy is way too stubborn and his ego won't allow him to discuss business with his nephew. It's sad that he'd rather fail than set his ego aside and do what's right given the situation he's stuck in.

No matter how bad the situation, you've got to have a plan B. Sitting still and dwelling on a lost prop won't work. A shaft was two weeks out. Another 7-10 days for repairs. Nearly a month. Season will be over and whatever is in those pots will have died. Can't blame Scotty for trying to salvage the season.

Scott was looking for his own personal gain. You think he cares about saving the season? He knew if he had the TB quota, he would have leverage to get into the seat on another boat. After you have one good season, you can be in that chair for awhile.

I don't think the problem is lack of visual inspection or zinc plates . I don't think they will neglect after investing a large amount of money on new engines setup , rig , shaft , props , etc ... Andy seemed to be in panic mode right now. And I get it. He might have been thinking about the boat and future months then just crab season. But that's NOT being a captain. Scott was right to ask Andy about what they were going to do with their crab quota while they still had it. Andy couldn't accept the fact that the Time Bandit was out of the game that season. And if they just held onto the quota, then nobody gets anything. Bad news especially after you get the bill for replacing the prop.

Andy says he is not interested in talking about leasing the remaining quota and wishes Scotty well if he wants to jump to another boat. Initially, when I first heard him say that, some years ago, I was thinking he was saying "You may be licensed to be a captain, but you have to actually become a captain to call yourself a captain." Now I agree with the guy. Maybe there's a deeper reason why he says "You're not a captain." With this clip, I understand. He had bigger issues to deal with than quota. The bigger issue being his boat was out of commission. Every season will miss quota with the boat being out of commission, so his more important priority at that moment was to get the boat running again so that he can stay in the fishing business, in general, for the long haul. Not just try to save this one particular season.

Andy isn't going fishing without a prop. He's losing quota. Now he's losing a chance to make money off that quota for his pride. Bad business decision. He could have paid for rhe prop and the shaft with that money. Now he gets nothing

Andy is 100% right. The youngsters have to put in the time in the lesser fishing seasons. They all want the big money crab but don't want to put in the work learning the craft. A license doesn't mean you know anything.

$100,000 for a prop? I'm not buying this. What is this boat worth $10,000,000
@TugboatMatt
@TugboatMatt Жыл бұрын
They arnt cheap. The prop for the tug I work on is $130k. It’s a 9’ diameter stainless steel 4 blade ice prop, my grandfather bought it for the tug in 1993 from Khalenberg. Even a new prop for my own tug is $12k and it’s only a little 36” 3 blade. Prop for one of my smaller boats is $8k and that’s a 26”x22” Khalenberg

Seems like a dumb thing to waste quote and cry about a prop. Not leasing the quota isnt going to get you a prop any faster. The prop fairy isnt gonna visit with a magical prop. Youre just going to lose out of money to go towards said prop. Cutting your nose off to spite your face

If you wanted to make a deal, talk to the man you want to make a deal with 1st! Thats Andy. THEN, go and look for a boat and lease the quota. Went about it the wrong way. Now you don’t even have a job. Lesson learned…..put it towards learning what it is to be a captain 👍 You kinda burned a bridge now🤷 Stepping on toes won’t get you to where you want to be my friend

How does $46,000 dollars turn into a 100,000 dollar bill if it costs $54,000 I think your getting screwed
@TugboatMatt
@TugboatMatt Жыл бұрын
That would be all in with the cost of haul out and work. It’s not cheap to haul out a vessel this size. It costed us $12k to have our 65’ tug lifted out of the water with a crane, as for a actual dry dock it costed us $35k just to put our 100’ tug in the dry dock, another $18k in labour for the dry dock crew that did the work like removing our prop, shaft, rudder and do a ultrasound on the hull, and it costed $1500/day to have the tug in the dry dock primarily to have the pumps running to keep the dry dock dry. (Worked out to be about $1000/day for the electricity for the pump to run and the rest for the wages of the dock supervisor to keep the pump running and for the wear & tear fee of the pump
