Join me for a few Peaceful Moments on a Bike & Barge Vacation in Belgium.
In this video we begin in Wetteren where we stopped for lunch and carry on into the city of Ghent, cycling right into the middle of the city where we had a couple of hours to look around before we headed off to meet the barge. In the last film we got quite soaked but once the rain went away it turned out to be a nice day.
Our original itinerary was to take us all the way to Bruges. However, the crew had to react to a couple of events which detoured us adding Antwerp to the trip but leaving us finishing up just outside Ghent. Not to worry, however, as Cycle Tours were all over dealing with the change of plan and a bus had been arranged to pick us up the following morning and deliver the group to Bruges.
In September 2024 I went on a Cycle Tours Bike & Barge vacation on barge Wending between Amsterdam in The Netherlands and Bruges in Belgium. The way such a vacation works is the guests eat and sleep on the barge then each morning making a packed lunch and then setting off on our bikes riding about 50km stopping for a coffee break and a lunch break. Mid to late afternoon the group would meet up with the barge which has sailed to a meeting point where we would have Happy Hour and then have dinner on board.
Along the way we stopped in Gouda, Dordrecht, Zuirikzee, Hanswwert, Antwerp and Ghent. The original route changed a little due to the weather.
The 20+ guests were looked after by a crew of four: Captain Arnaud, assistant Myrte, chef Emile and our guide Adri. All four of them were amazing and made sure everyone had a good time. On videos which end at the end of the day I will include pictures of the onboard dinner.
I highly recommend such a trip if you like gently cycling through lovely countryside. Such a vacation in The Netherlands and Belgium is especially appealing as it is mostly flat - the only problem facing the cyclist each day is the wind! But if the wind is behind you then it is great.
This was filmed in September 2024.
