It doesn't hit as hard unless you listen to the rest of the album beforehand, but it's always worth it. Finally, my favourite album. This was my first Meshuggah Record back in 2005. I could'nt believe that 8 String Guitars were a thing back then. Remember folks, this record came out long before Djent was even a thing. There was nothing remotely similar to this. Thank you for digging into the rabbithole even further. I never thought a youtuber would even dare to tackle the entire album. You deserved it. Keep rockin
@timothydog762 жыл бұрын
The 8 strings really showed up even before that when they made Nothing in 2002. For Nothing they started using 7 string guitars but using the top 7 strings of an 8 string guitar. But they did eventually get 8 string guitars made for them by Nevborn (I think). To some of us real old-head Meshuggah fans, the term "djent" really means something else. :) We weren't calling Nothing and Catch 33 "djent" at the time. The term originally came from the guitar sounds that came from the None and DEI albums where they used heavy palm muting on chords and made this huge "djent" sound. It has since evolved into a whole genre which is associated with really tuned down 8 string guitars and has taken on a different meaning.
@CrzyWzrd4L Жыл бұрын
@@timothydog76 The original release of Nothing had standard scale Ibanez 7 strings tuned down to F Standard. Meshuggah weren’t super happy with the guitar tone, and shortly after their Nevborn 8 strings came in. They re-recorded all of the guitars on baritone 8 strings and Fred remixed the record. That’s why the re-release guitars so much cleaner and brighter.

Surviving a straight listen-through of the entirety of *Catch 33* , arguably Meshuggah's most mind-meldingly conceptual and Lovecraftian album of all time. Also, a bit of trivia for this album. Because they kept changing the rhythms and riffs so much while writing the album, it was impossible for Haake to learn everything in time to record. So for the first and only time, most of the drumming on the final cut was programmed using Meshuggah's own highly refined software (I forget the name), using Haake's samples of course. They actually write or develop most of their music in programming first anyway, so it was by far the easiest route (and it still sounds amazing).

Just a side note. As I understand it, with "one long song" albums like these, the main reason they split the piece into so many smaller tracks is so that the album can still qualify as an album and not an EP (which earns reduced revenue in many cases). I think artistically, Meshuggah would have wanted to put the record out as one long piece of music, like "I".

I’m so happy you’re giving this record a listen all the way through! It’s such an insane one. My favorite part of the record is the riff at 18:25. By the way, all of the drums are programmed and it’s all Jens on vocals. 🖤🖤🖤☺️😉😊🔥🔥🔥

Your stank faces at 16:40 are perpetually all of us when it comes to this record. That twitchy fucking solo and that groove under it is incredible.

A magical album! So glad you enjoyed it (certainly not for all....)! Truly original (ever for them) and a bit of a slow starter but then... oh my god!... Favorite track(s) In death is life/is death.

drew, want to share some love for ya here! i really these full album reactions. because it's an entire album, it makes it feel more genuine to watch for me. it can be disappointing when I'm watching react content and the people end up seeming like they are taking their reactions, but I wanted to tell you that your content always feels legit. even when you exaggerate a bit for the camera, it still always feels like it's coming from a genuine place. im so glad you love this album too. catch 33 is my second favourite meshuggah album, koloss being my first fave. if you haven't heard it yet, I suggest giving it a good crack! would love to see you react to that one! good on ya mate!!!

Awesome dude great video you’re a legend 🤘 It was said that Thomas used a drum kit for budget reasons on this album, maybe they found it cheaper then renting a studio at the time I’m not sure. He plays the In Death is Death section live all the time
@drumkidstu3 жыл бұрын
It was a actually because they kept switching riffs around and stuff. The whole record was composed in front of a computer. It just made it easier to do. They play parts of this record live sometimes so it's all playable.
@choronzon693 жыл бұрын
"My brain is trying to process these signatures." 😅 Well technically it's the odd groupings, the time signature remains 4/4, but their riffs are odd groupings that cycle over that, creating metric displacement/polymeters. They're mental on this record. 😅

It took a while but this has become one of my favs from them. Moments like minds mirrors and the end of in death- is death are so unique to this album and I love it for that. Sum still gives me goosebumps

I appreciate you liking my previous comment, Drew - that one earned you my Like! First of all, I had forgotten how absolutely Avesome this album is, and why it has been my fave Meshuggah ever since I started listening to it 10+ years ago. No other shug album do I like A-Z like this one. You asking "how come this isnt reacted to more?" is definitely something Ive wondered before, as I truly think this is a Masterpiece, though unfortunately, as you so rightly put it, Really under radar. Btw, Thomas wrote the drumtracks to be playable, since he probably has at some point played them himself, and in this case he just opted to use a drummachine, which used samples of his own entire drumset.

Love this album. Had the 33 shirt on a day at Yellowstone years ago, and when i was to pay for some snacks at the General store at Mammoth hot springs, the lady behind the counter started laughing at me. Turned out she was jewish, and since meshuggah means crazy/insane in yiddish it made sense.. Anyways, lovely lady. Off we went to check some geysers out and then a big guy yelled behind me. He saw the Catch 33 print on my back, so there i was talking Meshuggah again :D

I really really like the piece of music at 35min. Its like a morbid woozy walk though a nightmarish nocturnal landscape from a horror movie. An eerie lucid dream of melted memories and painful premonitions. I think too, it sounds both super chilled out like your floating aimlessly in haunting deep space, or underwater in a deep icy abyss. Its very cinematic, haunting, and evoking. I appreaciate the heavier side of the band, but that creepy interlude was it for me.

Bro I LOVE that you were like "I can't get that time signature, I feel like I'm back in the beginning here," because that is EXACTLY how I feel about Meshuggah EVERY time lol. I am ALL about time signatures, I'm a musician, and I fucking love odd time sigs, but I'm like, 'wait a fuck, WHAT THE FUCK IS THIS SIGNATURE lol.' Love this and your openness with your love for music and all your vids. Cheers man.

The funniest is knowing a track by heart and not even knowing what the f is happening if you look closer. Like in do not look down, very easy to "sing along" but it's so groovy and organic you don't even notice the guitar changes key in the middle of a pattern every time. It's just the same pattern up until the solo whatever the key is and just occasionally comes together with the 4/4... Baffling.
@SonderCreationStudios3 жыл бұрын

Cheers. I have been a metal head my whole 55 year long life and this is tied with Nile's In Their Darkened Shrines for best metal record of the aughts. This, in my opinion, was where everything Meshuggah had been trying on the previous albums came together. They perfected their style and creativity on this album. They built on this in the albums since, but this was a perfection moment. Also it just fucking KILLS.
