FILM DESCRIPTION:
In feudal Japan, Lord Asano rules his province with fairness. However, jealous Lord Kira (Tadanobu Asano) fears that the shogun favors Asano over him and hatches a plot that ends with Asano's ritual suicide. After Asano's death, his samurai, led by Oishi (Hiroyuki Sanada), are forced to live as outcasts. Oishi wanders for several years but realizes that he must turn to Kai (Keanu Reeves), a mixed-blood warrior he once rejected, to help him and his ronin comrades take revenge on Lord Kira.

The unfortunate fact is that most samurai didn't want the position of ronin as they would have been looked down upon. And sure ronin does sound badass but if samurai didn't find a job for his skills which often was combat related. Being ronin meant you're essentially a homeless outcast that most people despise.

@@andreasballe7470 Terasaka Kichiemon, one of the few non-Samurai amongst the 47 since he was a regular infantryman. It's unclear why he was spared though. Some sources suggest he was too young (he was actually older than Chikara, but Chikara was too directly involved), that he was just given the role of messenger since he wasn't a Samurai (hired, not sworn to their lord), that he ran away on the night of the attack or ran away before the others turned themselves in. Either way, he was judged later than the other 46 and was pardoned.

The film Last Knights with Owen and Freeman is a much closer telling of the story. Should probably read the book. It is an amazing story and very Hollywood in that it pits city against rural folk. But the story in this film has virtually nothing to do with it. There is a much better film still waiting to be made about this. As many comments on here say, the Samurai way appears insane - and it was and it was dying out. And this was a kind of last hurrah, because things ripple out from the capital city and the rural heartland of the country didn't really have anything to replace it with. So it was an amazing clash of values that essentially started over something like a pub fight. It explains everything but it still doesn't make any sense. Which is why it's such a huge story in Japan. It's probably a better read that a film anyway. There is a Japanese subtitled 1941 version. 222 minutes. Might capture some of it.

They were in the right as Samurai avenging their lord, but the Shogun had specifically prohibited the revenge killing. That is why they still had to die as they had disobeyed the shogunate’s authority, despite the fact they were in the right in their duty as Samurai and by popular opinion. Originally they were supposed to be executed like common criminals but the nobles of the shogunate were divided on that punishment and the 47 ronin were also greatly admired by the general populace and so the Shogun allowed them to die as Samurai by committing seppuku. So that was basically the comprimise; an honourable death. Though in actual events, only one of the 47 ronin; Terasaka Kichiemon, was pardoned by the shogun and allowed to live, although no one knows exactly why.

The ronins brought justice was right and the Shogun knew about it. However, they were ordered not to seek revenge. If the Shogun let them live, this means his laws, order and himself dont have a power to rule. It will probably bring shame to himself and his clan. Other political enemies will also see this an opportunity to dethrone him.
@johnlee3830
@johnlee3830 3 жыл бұрын
@@jastinep.3659 But if the Shogun was the one who order it, he also has the power to pardon these samurais but he chose not to. Thus, Justice and Mercy was not shown. The Shogun prohibited revenge killing because he did not know what happen. If these samurais did not choose to intervene, the shogun would have also be eventually overthrown and killed. The reason why even tho he admitted the Samurais were right but still had them killed was because he wanted to show his power as the shogun which is just pitiful in my opinion.

There are so many cool aspects of Samurai culture that I think are amazing. Most notably their discipline & loyalty. But I just can't wrap my head around Seppuku being one of those things. I understand that it's one of the highest tests of loyalty that one could possibly be given and that its seen as a form of honor... but... ultimately it just seems to stupid, pointless and a waste of valuable soldiers who would give their lives to protect their family and homeland.

They were ordered not to take revenge, but decided to do so anyway after learning their lord was tricked (the other guy cheated). @@showdown2613 During the Shogunate years, the Shogun was basically the Emperor in all but name, so that would be a pretty daunting prospect... let alone dishonorable. It is quite a tragic set of deaths, even if they were honored an honorable deaths. Though also keep in mind if you look at it this was a way of the shogun honoring them for their loyalty (as said they could have been executed as criminals), but also reinforce absolute authority via them having to die for their actions, and them willing taking that understanding that remaining alive would jeopardize the stability the shogun creates with his authority.
