Linfamy:... name is Kira Yoshi- Me:-kage. I am 33 years old. My house is in the northeast section of Morioh, where all the villas are, and I am not married. I work as an employee for the Kame Yu department stores, and I get home every day by 8 PM at the latest. I don't smoke, but I occasionally drink. I'm in bed by 11 PM, and make sure I get eight hours of sleep, no matter what. After having a glass of warm milk and doing about 20 minutes of stretches before going to bed, I usually have no problems sleeping until morning. Just like a baby, I wake up without any fatigue or stress in the morning. I was told there were no issues at my last check-up. I am trying to explain that I'm a person who wishes to live a very quiet life. I take care not to trouble myself with enemies, like winning or losing, that would cause me to lose sleep at night. That is how I deal with society, and I know that is what brings me happiness. Although, if I were to fight I wouldn't lose to anyone.

Additionally, Yoshihisa was scolded by the Shogun and others for defending himself too poorly in face of Naganori's assault. His family took it too seriously, branding it as cowardice on his part, so much that they soon abandoned him to his own devices, leaving him with a handful of retainers and only one of his younger sons staying with him and protecting him until his wounds immobilised him. The family head was his grandson by that time. He was pretty much offered up on a plate to any kinds of assassination attempts, the "lowering of his guard" was actually his grandson ostracising him more and more, plus because of him, he had to live in shame after serving the Shogunate exceptionally for all his life, probably knowing what was about to come. The ronin sought to restore the Asano so all the former retainers living meager lives could return to their former lives, and well, because they likely believed Yoshihisa was somehow responsible after all. Following the incident, his grandson was the one to get the blame, and for a very good reason: while the ronin acted more or less as a samurai should, he did the extreme opposite, allowing an elder member and former head of his family, who he was responsible to look after, end up murdered. His life was forfeit and his clan demoted for acting much more improperly in comparison to the ronins. In all, the true tragedy was that of Yoshihisa, who did his job (ah, and he never demanded a bribe, gifting was a practice of the time, stuff like the girls for Naganori thing. People might have expected him to give Yoshishige some gift of gesture, especially considering that the former was much richer than the latter)

The story currently being transmitted is a mixture of historical facts and kabuki stories, and many people misunderstand. Looking at the records at the time the incident happened, Kira was a wonderful lord who was respected by the people of his territory, and was actively engaged in flood control works. Also, Asano is a young daimyo who has problems with women and drinking habits. Oishi and the 47 subordinate warriors were unable to resist directly because the Tokugawa Shogunate was powerful. Oishi and his subordinates are criminals who attacked Kira's house with a large number of people and dragged out and killed the old man who had been hiding. I sympathize with Kira, the great lord, who is a descendant of Emperor Seiwa and a descendant of Ashikaga Shogunate clan.

I actually lived in the town/city for a time where this all took place. It's a nice, quiet town and the locals all feel a bond via the history and folklore behind the events that transpired. All 47 Ronin have plaques dedicated to their memory on the walls of the train station and there are historical spots all over the town. The castle is all just ruins nowadays though, but nowadays the ruins are in the city park. Nice place to chill with a cold beer. Every December they have a festival for the 47 Ronin, definitely worth checking out!

I took courses in Japanese history during my undergrad and I sort of stuck with it. That drama was more than what I had in class and believe it or not, your production had more info than the drama, particularly how it was not all black and white. Nowadays the young, new daimyo would be instructed by the protocol office on how to behave and the older employee of the Shogun would probably not be allowed to be such a bully. That TV drama made a good break from what I was doing and it even got me into anime and manga. Your work is just the greatest. @@Linfamy

I had never heard the real story behind the tale. Thanks for that. It reminds me of the story of Robin Hood. How Prince (later King) John was this horribly despotic creature (he wasn't) and King Richard the Lionheart was this super honorable king who was the savior of the people of England and who loved his country. Yeah, he loved his country so much that he ran off halfway across the world to fight wars in another country. And don't get me started on the perception of the Crusades as this honorable fight to "liberate" the Holy Land. It's times like these that I really wish scientists would get off their ass and invent time travel already.

King Richard 1 fought for the Holy Land because Christians could no longer travel through the middle-east without being murdered, raped, and sold into slavery. Richard ultimately failed to conquer the Holy Land, but he did manage to convince the Muslims to allow Christians back into the Holy Land. Saladin, commander of the Muslim forces, respected Richard so much, he honored the deal he and Richard agreed to. Saladin also attended Richard's funeral when he died. The man was a hero

Other evidences show that before "holy war", both parties already enjoy privilege to visit their own holy jerussalem. It's a greedy that drive both religion to fight each other. But i'm too lazy to put the source here.
@simonl46575 жыл бұрын
You have to realize that both during, before and after the crusade the muslim caliphate was rapidly expanding onto former Christian lands. In Spain, in Egypt, in Syria, Armenia, Asia Minor, the Mediterranean. Even invaded Italy for a brief period. The Crusade was a response to all of that. You can criticize some of the christian atrocities committed but they weren't doing anything different than the muslims or their temporariness of the time

The story of the 47 Ronins is the embellishment of a real historical event known as the Ako Incident in the historical records of Japan. The story is portrayed in Chushingura. The historical Asano Naganori is not the gentleman portrayed in the story but a man with a rash hot headed personality and often acts on impulse. The Shogunate had agents to spy on all the feudal lords and document their personalities. Asano's records in the Shogunate documents do not reflect any positive traits. The administration of Ako, Asano's domain was done by his chief retainer Oishi Yoshio as Asano lacks the interest in ruling his domain and spends most of the time indulging in pleasure. He and another feudal lord are assigned by the Shogunate to host a visiting envoy from Kyoto. Kira Yoshinaka or Yoshihisa according to official records is assigned to teach them on court etiquettes as he is a koke or master of ceremonies. Kira is portrayed as a greedy and corrupt court official who demand bribes for tutoring Asano and another feudal lord court etiquettes. Whether Kira is greedy and corrupt as portrayed will never be known due to the lack of evidence. Kira's position as the master of ceremonies is highly prestigious but unfortunately a low paid position. His annual income is barely 10% of Asano's annual income. Perhaps Kira expected some rich gifts as compensations for tutoring as a supplement to his meagre income. As a master of ceremonies, Kira sets a very high standard and demands perfection. Asano lacks patient to learn the court etiquettes properly and perhaps got frequent reprimands by Kira. Being a rash person, Asano perhaps see all the reprimands by Kira as insults and decides to attack Kira on impulse while still inside the Shogun's castle. It is a great crime of drawing a sword while in the Shogun's castle and punishable by death. Asano will choose time and place to strike Kira if he is truly a gentleman as portrayed in the story and will not foolishly attack Kira while still within the Shogun's castle. Due to his rash hot headed personality, he attacks Kira within the Shogun's Castle and got punished by committing seppuku. The act of the 47 Ronin is criticized by some renown samurais. The author of Hagakure, Yamamoto Tsunetomo, ask a well-known question of what happen if Kira died less than a year after Asano's death due to an illness. The ronins wait for more than a year before finding an opportunity to strike. Kira is already at the advanced age of 60 as the average life expectancy is around age 40 plus. When that happens, the ronins will lost their only chance to exact revenge and will forever be branded as cowards thus bringing further shame to the Asano clan. Furthermore Asano did broken the law and had to be dealt with accordingly and the ronins are forbidden under law to seek revenge. Also the ronins may have self interest reason for reporting their plan to the Shogunate. Perhaps they expect to be pardoned by the Shogunate on grounds they had acted according to Bushido and enable them to find employment elsewhere. Hence the story of the 47 Ronin is more about carrying out revenge on the person that the ronins perceived as responsible for the downfall of their clan rather than honor, loyalty and sacrifice. In my personal opinion, the real victim of injustice is Kira Yoshinake who has the unfortunate of task of teaching a feudal lord with rash hot headed personality court etiquettes and got condemned for eternity as a result.
@k5384710 ай бұрын
I've read that the fact that Asano was a hot header poor leader just made the act 'more better', as they were sacrificing their lives and degrading themselves for a worthless man who treated them like dirt, because it showed their devotion to duty and honor. Or something like that.

4:52 - 5:41 and 7:55 - 8:30 An issue I keep seeing arise in the longer-term aftermath of decisively transformative ages, is that social/personal development keeps becoming less effective due to society "Fighting the Last War" and failing to adapt what it means to be Good, Brave, or Resourceful to a different era, and wind up excessively latching on to what little aspects of the "Heroes of Old" once had, with few if anyone reaching the now impossible pedestal, leaving resulting friction occurring for this bad reason. I've seen it first hand with debates between the old/young guards of the Digital Revolution, and among the old survivors of the WW2 generation reminiscing about how the ACW vets used to be somewhat confused at becoming "Living History", and that it had come full circle. As a good example of what I mean one can see it plainly in these recordings from the 1920's/1930's. kzbin.info/www/bejne/ZneoZGOXaa9mbrM kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5Sqdphoosaem68 kzbin.info/www/bejne/o6LChmlpf5uqhZo

The revenge aspect hinges on Kira provoking Asano's attack by unreasonably insulting him (supposedly because Asano didn't give him backhanders for the etiquette teaching). Since its necessary for the story to work, I feel we might as well leave it in.

I say it’s revenge because they likely held Kira responsible for the death. Emotion never gets along with reason, after all, and it’s possible that, in the minds of the ronin, if Kira hadn’t pushed Asano too far (even if Kira didn’t), their lord wouldn’t have been forced to kill himself.
@jeffreysams33483 жыл бұрын
There were also reports that Asano had a really nasty temper... Quite possible he was lazy, got called on it and instead of acknowledging his mistake...he went ballistic... Actually I live in Tokyo and the temple where the graves of the 47 ronin (and Asano for that matter) is called Sengakuji 泉岳寺。。Makes a great place to visit and every day many people come to pay their respects... Also, Sengakuji is a zen (Soto-shu) temple and once a month they have zazen sessions open to the public (I went twice for zazen)..

My understanding of the incident was the murder of Kira was more of a protest to the Shogun Tsunayoshi abolishing the clan (under the lack of an approved heir rule) Even though Tsunayoshi had approved Asano Nagahiro as an heir to the Asano holdings of Ako. It was an accusation of the Shogun operating in poor faith in order to claim and redistribute lands. (one of their main means of holding power)

There were some inaccuracies in the video. The shogun fully understood what happened and what an honorable thing those ronin had done. He was actually very sympathetic towards them and planned to make them an example of honor. The thing is, he couldn't directly pardon them because doing so would imply that the shogun has previously wronged Asano. So the shogun consulted his nephew-in-law, also a prince and a monk priest Koben Hoshinno. The prince monk advised him to not pardon anyone, because many of the ronins were still young, in the future they may do some dishonorable things that bring disgrace to this honorable event, making it imperfect. The shogun followed this advise and ordered seppuku.

All of the inconsistencies in the story stem from the fact that the proponents of Asano basically tried to make a good guy from the bad guy and managed to do so. If you think about it in such a way, as a spin of the story told from a perspective of the bad guys, it makes more sense. Similar to how zealots of a political option (I don't mean any in particular) when faced with an obvious flaw in their beliefs go to advanced apologetics to tell ridiculous and far stretching stories that are supposed to explain those flaws just to make barely any sense of their side of things. E.g. the medieval witch hunters who tried to spin around the fact they were basically killing random women by telling things like they were monsters hunters and how surviving the witch trails proves you are a witch.

Yeah for sure people can do mental gymnastics to defend their beliefs, but I'm sure many of the ronin believed that revenge was justified.

There is an interpretation of Oishi's actions as being not true samurai. A real samurai would have attacked Kira immediately not caring about winning or losing. However, Oishi plotted to win and this showed a lack of sincerity and emotion.

Reminds me of that other famous story: Cinderella and the seven dwarfs. She always liked some kinky "hot love" so she ran off with the seven dwarfs. This real story was discovered by the famous researchers D. Duck and P. Opeye, however people remember and tell this story differently 😜

Welcome! First rule of the channel is you must sacrifice a pokemon.
@hi.moriarty4 жыл бұрын
@@Linfamy Ahhh, yes...but by saying 'first' you are making the implication that there are more rules. Should I have blindly given anything to you to be sacrificed, it would have been a mistake on my part for the lack of forethought. Would my need for approval and acceptance have been misdirected in the eagerness to please? Would I have been weaker to the social status of a creator's acknowledgment, I may have quickly felt a rush of validation from your reply...and this could have clouded the simplicity of your words to me. I may have been to careless in the reading of the words. You did not specify whether the Pokemon was to be from my personal possession or not. Therefore there would have been either a greater - or lesser - risk depending on what my need was to garner your trust and what the motive for your approval was based on. And now that it has been a moment passed and lost to the essence of being ripped apart...I have no Pokeman. I used to - sort of. Lots of cards. I don't know where they are now. I can offer no sacrifice from that which I do not own for myself.
@Linfamy4 жыл бұрын
The rule is grammatically sound. The word "a" before "pokemon" indicates a singular pokemon with no implication of ownership between said pokemon and the person performing the sacrifice. This should be obvious.

I've paid my respects at the graves of 47 Ronin at Sengaku-ji, and have always enjoyed both the actual story and the body of historical fiction surrounding it. Except the Keanu film. I know he's internet Jesus, but that movie bit. I found the commentary on the Ako incident in the Hagakure most instructive on the divided opinion of Japanese in the warrior caste on the subject, and they're rather fresh considering Yamamoto Tsunetomo was a contemporary to these events. That both this event, and the writing of the Hagakure were at pretty much the end of the Samurai caste as we know it in popular conception is also rather interesting. If for some reason you want to read the Hagakure, I suggest the translation by Prof Alexander Bennett of Kansai University. Both a skilled Japanese linguist and historian as well as a talented martial artist, his edition of the Hagakure is complete... and has plenty of context provided so you can have a fuller understanding of the various anecdotes Yamamoto Tsunetomo related before his death.

I just subscribed today so I really have not been able to look at all the videos so this question may not I don't know how to explain it. Have you ever done a video about Japan's greatest Samurai? I cannot remember his name but I remember him being quite the slob. I guess he was the anti Samurai in some ways but his skill level against other Samurai was unmatched. About five years ago I spent two hours watching a documentary about him. I could describe some of his fights duels if that would work. I just cannot remember the name.

In Hagakure, Tsunemoto criticises the ronin for waiting so long. He also talks about how Kira could have died in the time they took to wait, stating that they should have acted immediately to make it an honourable act.

Killing Kira instead of the Shogun who ordered the ritual suicide is due to how they know that Asano broke protocol and should have known the consequences, which remains understandable even if we don't know how much of an insufferable twat Kira might have been or not. A more apt equivalent would be if a priest beloved by the community molested some kid, the kid grows up to legal age damaged, tries to kill the priest when he sees the priest going around with his younger brother, and then fails and the judge doesn't take the psychological defense as valid. In that case, does the little brother avenge his older brother by going after the judge following the law (or the Governor/President for not pardoning him, which is more equivalent to the Shogun) or does he go after the priest? If he has any idea for his brother's motivation, which may be that the brother was molested or that his brother was trying to extort money from the parish funds because he's a thug (these days what you believe depends on whether the kid goes to church well dressed or whether he hangs out with friends who all have their baggy pants too low or something) other than "I dunno he just went nuts," either way he'd go after the priest, not the judge, unless the cops were totally lazy and railroaded him. The priest is still more realistic while the cops being the target is more like a season end cliff hanger plot for a CBS show.
