Few additional recommendations (Aomori, Tochigi, Shimane): 2) Aomori also has the Nebuta festival in summer. If you haven't checked it out, you definitely should if it ever allows visitors again. It is also one of the most impressive festivals all over Japan. I also found it relatable what you said about Yamagata pref to have a special place in your heart. For me it was Aomori, where I spent my first year in Japan. My very first stay was in Shimane tho, which is also why I can give a good recommendation for when you go there again (↓). 9) Tochigi's main city, Utsunomiya, is only famous for Gyoza, which will be disappointing once you eat them, but for people who are fans of bars, Utsunomiya apparantly is an infamous bar town with many more or less famous bartenders. The beef in Tochigi is also extremely delicious. 33) Shimane has one of the most important Shinto shrines in all of Japan, considered to be the oldest one. It is called Izumo Taisha and is probably Shimanes biggest tourist attraction. Foodwise it is also famous for soba and green tea, which is freshly produced there so it is very delicious. My husband and I actually plan to have our marriage ceremony at Izumo Taisha, because it is THE Shinto shrine for marriage. It was also the first Shinto shrine I ever visited when I was in Japan, I didn't understand at all the importance of it lol
@EbbFlowe2 жыл бұрын
My first stay in Japan was as a volunteer in Shimane as well, I came down here to recommend Izumo Taisha as well! I'm not sure if it's still operational these days, but near the shrine there's also a Japanese History museum that delves into Japanese creation mythology (Izanami/nagi, Susano'o, Orochi, etc) since legend has it that Izumo is where all of the gods of Japan originate from. Apparently all of the gods from throughout Japan gather in Izumo in October for some kind of summit.

There's absolutely no editing, but I have a bunch of random raw footage from that time on my KZbin channel if you're curious! You may see someone you know haha

@@EbbFlowe I went in 2014 and was at a different location than you :D I was in a tiny tiny town called Hirata for about two weeks, preparing for a Shinto festival that is only held every 30 years. After that I wanted to do a whole 1 year voluntary service and landed on the opposite land, Aomori😆

@@captainkacke1651 That sounds awesome! I had the pleasure of being part of the community for several "Oda Matsuris" during my short 3 months there (re: trophy foreigner XD). There was one time where they actually let me carry one of those 80+ pound, 15 foot tall "backpack shrines" for lack of a better term around the town for the parade. The older man I took the burden off of for a while even stopped by the place I was staying to give me 5000 yen as thanks for the help! Shimane people are seriously some of most unconditionally kind people I've ever met, and shockingly open despite having so relatively little interaction with foreigners that far into the inaka.

Considering you basically didn't say anything about Yamanashi prefecture, let me add something to it. The Shingen-ko festival is a yearly festival in which they celebrate one of the greatest Daimyo of Japan during the Sengoku Jidai: Takeda Shingen. It is also one of the largest samurai (reenactment) gatherings in Japan.

I agree. Yamanashi also has some nice onsen and is famous for grapes and peaches. I'm also partial to the sake breweries there like Tanizakura and Shichiken. I haven't really seen much of the Shingen-ko matsuri but had the honour of taking part in the parade. In recent years the city has also rebuilt quite a bit of the castle. Unfortunately nobody has any proof what the main tower looked like so there's still discussion how or if to rebuild it. The Takeda shrine where the castle of the Takeda clan was is also pretty nice. They have theatre plays there.

Actually your opinion on Nagoya is far from controversial. I remember reading an article not that long ago about a poll showing that Japanese people themselves ranked Nagoya as the major city they'd like to visit the least as tourists in all of Japan, and something along the lines of tourism officials of the city being aware of the bland reputation of it and vowing to do more to make it more attractive.

I know how you feel Chris i haven't been able to see my wife/family for 2 years now. Japan has always been one of the countries we wanted to visit and when they closed borders well our dreams were shattered.

Thanks for the bucket list for when I (eventually) return to Japan! I studied abroad in Nagoya and while I disagree with it, I can understand why it's boring city compared to places like Tokyo and Osaka. I still recommend people to give it a try. If you're gonna visit there only once I highly recommend Nagoya Castle, which in my opinion is the better looking castle in all of Japan.
@kaltaron12842 жыл бұрын
I haven't seen much of Nagoya but I liked the Nagoya City Science Museum. Would be a great visit for kids as you can try various experiments yourself. And at the time they had a special exhibition on how the old monster films were done, complete with a small city district as model scale that you could walk through and cameras would film the "giants" strolling through it. When it cames to castles, my favourite one is Matsumoto. Inuyama and Matsumae are also pretty cool. Shikoku and Kyuushu have some pretty nice ones though like as mentioned Maruyama. I don't like the concrete replicas like Oosaka.
@fatalshot00932 жыл бұрын
@@kaltaron1284 When I went to the science museum, they had an exhibition called "Sweets" where everything on display looked like it was made of candy and sweets. Osaka Castle's not my favorite, but I liked that you could go inside and in it was a museum. It was cool to go to the top and get a view of the city.
@kaltaron12842 жыл бұрын
@@fatalshot0093 That's also pretty cool. Oosaka Castle looks pretty neat from the outside and museum inside is also pretty good but I prefer the historical castles. IMHO the smaller ones like Inuyama, Hiroshima or Matsumae have a lot of charm.

Also Nagoya is a good place to go secondhand shopping. I was able to get a formal kimono (with a small stain) for 5,000 yen!

This opening is incredible. This is the good old funny Chris with so many good ideas for funny sketches and scenes. Why don't you do more of this. This opening should definitel..definetil.. defintily... F****, it should be featured on your main channel. I am convinced you could write and shoot a short series similar to Midnight Diner in your set.

That’s kinda the whole point of having his new set, so he can do stuff like that.

I agree. I love the stuff where he's just being clever and funny in a room. The mascots video was also great. Not such a fan of the "documentary" stuff, though it's still good.

Your channel has helped greatly to plan so thank you, Chris. If i where to ever run into you while there, I'll at least buy a round. So Thanks

also, a couple of things that could be cool to show off ( also really sorry, I cant remember most of the actual Japanese names) Kegon Falls Nikko-zan Rinnoji Temple there's a mountain that you take a tram to the top and there's a monkey zoo at the top (kinugawa I think?) Tobu World Square, a museum of highly detailed world wonders Oya History Museum ( I believe it was for granite. many movies were filmed inside of it) there's also a big lake at the top of this mountain that you have to take a windy road up, but they have boat tours and you can also rent your own little paddle boat (also tried the mother and son chicken for the first time up there Edo Wonderland Foot Onsen (its a hot spring.... but not one you're probably used to) Shinykyo Bridge and I'm sure many more! Look forward to that video one day, I think its a very underrated part of Japan
