It's not racism but local culture. If you look like them then too they will say don't touch them or their places. What are the other Malana rules? For a very long time, its residents avoided contact with neighboring Kullu villages; the village council refused to acknowledge the Indian state; and it fought all outside influence. They are particularly protective of their natural resources, so it is forbidden to hammer nails into trees, take dried twigs and leaves out of the forest, or burn wood there. Similar restrictions apply to hunting wild animals, which is only permitted occasionally during the year with the village council's approval. If wild animals attack the villagers' flocks of sheep and goats, hunters are dispatched from the hamlet to the meadows to kill them. Additionally, if a bear is slain, the hunter is rewarded but is required to place the bear's fur in the Devta's Bhandara. The prohibition against police intervention in their system is another odd but real rule. Anyone who requires police assistance must pay a 1000 rupee fine to the village council. A guy may have several wives, and if he divorces one of them, he is required to support her financially. Anyone who weds someone from outside the village shall be permanently exiled. Summary of the secrets of Malana: Malana Grows The World's Best Hashish Malana is home for 'Touch-Me-Not' Villagers People are allowed to take photographs of Villagers, but video, a big fat NO They follow the ancient Greek system and consider themselves to be descendants of Alexander the Great. Touching is completely not allowed be it their temples, walls, or villagers as they believe that they are superior and look down on everyone who is an outsider. Don't fret if a child offers you hashish there. It is because Hashish is so widely available and openly distributed. Can you stay in Malana? There are no lodging alternatives in Malana because the area forbids tourists from accessing the village lifestyle. Keep in mind that there are plenty of places to stay in the area around Malana but not here. There are a few eateries towards the end of the village where you can spend one or two nights. I visited this village 7 years ago and witnessed something insane… We were in the town centre trying to buy some hash and food (which involves putting money on the ground while they put the food/hash on the ground separately to make sure we don’t touch). We already felt uncomfortable and could sense we were unwanted. From the other side of the square we saw a man pacing very quickly past everyone and with a few more relaxed friends following him. When he came close we saw an absolutely crazed look in his eye while he was holding one hand in the palm of the other hand. He was acting very erratically and looked as though something had possessed him with both eyes as wide as anyone could possibly have them. He marched up to a building and went up the stairs and into one of the rooms. We looked at the locals inquisitively to try and get a hint to what was happening, but they stared blankly back at us giving nothing. From the room the man had entered, we heard a great crashing sound as if he had been throwing everything around in the room and destroying everything. We could only assume that a tourist had touched him and he went berserk. We heard a rumour they have to sacrifice their favourite goat when someone touches them😂 but it’s probably not true haha.. The day ended with me and my 2 friends asking for accommodation, to which at first they seemed polite and introduced us to a guy who could sort us out somewhere to stay. He asked us to follow him through the village. We obliged, but before we knew it we had walked back down the path that we came (past the garbage waterfall) and to a “campsite” a 10 minute walk outside the village. Despite the fact that we realised they politely kicked us out of their village it was a beautiful setting, we stayed in a tent on a cliff edge overlooked the Himalayan mountains. Another side story: while we were outside the shop, my friend turned around to ask me if I wanted anything and was leaning against the countertop with his hand down😂 I noticed and gave him the eye to be like dude get your fuckin hand off of there NOW. Thank god the shopkeeper didn’t notice or we’d be fucked haha. Apparently they knock down a building if it’s touched by an outsider Side note: apparently they don’t wanna be touched because they believe they’re descendants of Alexander the Great? Also they’re home to the world famous hash/charas: Malana Cream. It’s the most expensive hash you can buy in Amsterdam

So… I’ve been here several times. And… I wouldn’t say they’re particularly racist. Malana is it’s own place away from everything they don’t even particularly recognise an external government. Or at least try not to, I’m not well informed about the politics. The whole no touching thing is more religious/spiritual than racist imo and not everyone follows it that strictly. It’s mostly the village elders. But it’s also mixed in to their local laws cuz they get soooo many outsiders and trekkers travelling through. I made friends with plenty of locals there, restaurant owners and villagers who’ll ahem ahem… sell you things. Once you actually sit down with them and be friendly with them they can choose to not follow the whole no touching thing with you. It’s like they’re not allowed to touch strangers but if you’re not a stranger anymore…? Besides pretty hard not to touch each other when you’re passing youknowwhats around lol. I did on several occasions there come across shop owners who’d let you know that they’re not allowed to touch you and stuff. But they’re chill if you for example keep money on the table or something instead of handing it to them directly. But yeah there’s also elders and other people who’ll act super omgggg don’t touch meeee. Or like those ladies walk by you but warn you not to accidentally touch them. Just felt like I needed to share this cuz as someone who’s spent a LOT of time in Himachal, and been to malana several times… some misinformation still seems to exist.

Awesome video! Have to hard disagree though that tourists wouldn't throw trash down the side of a mountain if they thought no one was looking. I live in Colorado and that's a pretty common problem. I haven't seen people do it (which is because people don't tend to do it when they think strangers are watching them), but I've helped clean up some bouldering/climbing areas and shit is super common. Tourists do it at least as much, if not more than, the locals. After all, if you're just passing through, you don't have to worry about the crag being in poor condition when you go back next week.

I do agree that tourists do it to, but in India it’s genuinely something locals do frequently but that depends on the area. In Himachal Pradesh in the smaller towns they typically have very few trash cans. The trash cans located in restaurants and bathrooms (if they have one at all) are very small and don’t have trash bags. There were no trash cans in public in Kullu (my town). They burn their trash, but don’t really have designated spots to burn it so the trash usually ends up blowing around everywhere outside. I lived in a village that was not a tourist hotspot and it looked a lot like this trash wise. In other states in India where there were more trash cans there was far less litter. I’m hopeful that there will be better waste management methods implemented in the future but that’s just how it currently is. We kept our trash in our bags until we reached our home (we lived in a school because we were there to teach English) but we don’t know where they took our trash after we put it downstairs.

@@skrillozedd "those countries"... what exactly are "those".. also tourists absolutely trash local areas a lot.. I mena hell look at how people treat campsites too.. when you're a tourist and dont need to live somewhere people view it as a dumping ground..
