@Songs Mirth - I had heard long ago that sometime in the year of 1955 in Lubbock , Texas when practicing in a garage - Buddy Holly vocals and guitar - Jerry Allison drums + Joe B. Mauldin upright bass - decided to call their trio the " Beetles " - (Just remember that here are many of these insects called beetles all over the ground in Texas) - But it was changed to the "Crickets" when drummer Jerry Allison suggested it a bit later later in that year ! And with that there is a link to the Beatles ! - Both John Lennon and Paul McCartney were big fans of Buddy Holly and the Crickets - In a mystical way - I feel that the idea of the name was sort of floating in the air when John and Paul named their band the Beatles - Joe Nania a.k.a. "Hollywood" Joe

I think that's more of a testament to how quickly music evolves into something unfamiliar rather than one to the quality of music today because I'm sure many people who were in their 70's back when Buddy Holly, Elvis, and The Beatles were performing would have said the same thing about their music; I'm just as certain about that as I am that my generation will eventually come to say the exact same things about the music of our children and grandchildren as well. I just think it's interesting how history repeats itself because for a time rock and roll was and even jazz were considered the devil's music and were thought to be bad influences on the youth.

This move has been criticized from a factual point of view as not being totally accurate but as an experienced guitar player I feel that this clip is so authentic. @@douglasadams6024 I'll have to disagree with that statement. Although Chuck Berry started his carrier a year after Buddy Holly, his guitar style and song structure were more of a foundation for modern rock, and if we really dig into it, Bill Haley was playing in a similar fashion before both of them.( I'm sure there were others) I agree Buddy Holly did take his compositions to a different level, with the introduction of strings. *"Rock and roll originated from musical styles such as gospel, jump blues, jazz, boogie woogie, rhythm and blues, and country music. While rock and roll's formative elements can be heard in blues records from the 1920s, and in country records of the 1930s, the genre did not acquire its name until 1954". So it's seems it's more of an amalgamation of these early styles that shaped rock and roll, so we can't say it was the efforts of one particular person. *en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_and_roll#:~:text=Rock%20and%20roll%20originated%20from,acquire%20its%20name%20until%201954.

I wasn't born until 27 years after Buddy passed, yet he is one of my top two favourite artists (the other is John Lennon and there isn't a cigarette paper between them). The film isn't accurate, but, the musical performances are great and it can lead people to learn more about Buddy and the points that are accurate; Buddy did win over the Apollo (though it took a week, not a single song), The Crickets did have to say they were Sam Cook's entourage when they were on tour. Finally, to borrow from Terry Pratchett in Soul Music, given the innovation and musical talent that Buddy showed within his life, imagine what he could have achieved had he live; he will always be '...more famous for the songs he didn't write...'

Hollywood takes their liberties for certain.. but Busey brings the energy of the music right into your face.. probably the same way Buddy did.. and that’s why it works so well.

@@aaronjones6892 it may not be the most accurate biopic ever made but it’s still a good movie. Definitely worth watching for Busey’s portrayal as Buddy Holly. Buddy was pretty much forgotten about in 1978 and this movie did introduce Buddy to a new generation.

I still remember seeing this movie when I was 11, on its opening weekend when I was a kid. I remember being bored watching it because I was a kid who just saw Star Wars the year prior when I was 10. It wasn't until I was in my 20's and watched it again did I appreciate what a great movie it is. IMO, it's still Gary Busy's greatest performance.
