Incredible, legendary live band. Anyone who saw them will tell you it's probably the best show they ever saw. And for those who didn't see it, check out the 2001 live performance of "Baba O' Riley" from NYC in dedication to the fallen heroes of 9/11. With Ringo's son, Zack on drums, it was an amazing performance. No one wanted to follow the Who that night.

You know, the bass player is not the showman in the band, but no doubt he did his job excellently, his bass playing has been impeccable thru the ages and I'd say he has a lot to do with the success of the band as a whole, and I guess the only one that isn't gesturing and jumping around. Roger, well, imagine Queen without Freddy, that's what Roger is to the band. Pete, the songwriter and along with Keith the eyecatchers of the group, no doubt. I admit, I have rediscovered the band, didn't know much about it until "Who Are You" back in the middle seventies, but watching their videos I recognized the sound at the beginning and since it has stuck to my mind. Keith Moon, well, Keith is a big powerhouse in the band, I have always liked his style of drumming, which reminded me of a video I was watching of Rush, "Tom Sawyer" and in one of the sudden glances at the band drummer I saw this guy that very much looked like Keith and asked myself if it was possible that Rush's recording was before Moon's passing because this guy played, drummed very similar to Moon, and of course Googled it. Come the discussion about the proverbial egg or chicken first appearance, since these two musicians play, to my understanding, very much alike. Who found who? Who cares, what I care is the both, Neil Peart and Keith Moon have easily been a big part of the band successes. It is a shame they both passed away. I can't imagine any of the bands without them, although both drummers were of course replaced. Baba O'Riley is one of them anthems for The Who, a band that was discovered by the 90's generation by the CSI Miami theme song, whoever made that choice of using The Who song made a great choice, the people from that decade who grew up watching Caruso and the show now know The Who has been making great music since the early 70's. The Who is a great band, even without Moon. Now I rest my case.
@johndavis12173 жыл бұрын
@@davidacevedo8620 Peart and Who, easily in the top three of rock drummers. Geddy Lee and Entwistle easily in the top three bassist. Alex and Towshend are two overlooked guitarist. When I compare Peart and Moon, I see vast differences. Moon seems powerful and fast, he has some epic fills. Peart is a technician. Disclaimer, I'm no musician, just a fan of both bands.

I was never a huge fan of The Who but last summer as I sold my house and was moving out, I found hundreds of vinyl albums that had apparently been left behind by renters over the years up in the attic. The Who must've been their favorite band. I took all those albums to my new place and bought a record player. Here I am exploring them on KZbin and realizing just what a great live band they were. This song is breathtaking.

So I rented The Kids Are Alright on VHS, put it in the VCR, blasted the mono TV and got to work. I would stop and rewind this part so many times because it was my favorite song by The Who, that hearing this version in particular will always remind me of that day as a kid, spent painting in the basement, listening to The Who, when rock n roll meant the world.

Between John and his thunder fingers and Keith being all over the place actually it was Pete and his prefect timing that kept the band in time. Maybe not on this song per say but normally it was just that way.
@forestfeet57698 ай бұрын
This is unique for its time because the synth loop doesn't allow for any tempo fluctuation which is why Keith is wearing headphones here. Nowadays most big acts have all members wearing in ear monitors and are playing to backing tracks with a click. This particular song is sort of an early precursor to that method. The Wall live performances by Pink Floyd are an even better example because everything had to sync up with the on screen projections and continuity between songs.

In the era of the late '60s and early '70s, pretty damn good. The late 60s was a veritable Big Bang of musical Talent featuring some of the finest singer-songwriters and instrumentalists ever to walk on this planet. We just took it for granted and thought that music would always be like that. Boy were we wrong about that. We slipped from this kind of stuff into fucking Disco, of all things. Now I might like three or four disco songs but considering how many were written and got monster air time that's not a very good ratio of like to dislike. One that Springs to mind is That's the Way by KC and the Sunshine Band.

I remember how disappointed I was when I heard the studio versions of Baba O'Reily and Won't get fooled again.(which was a few months after I had been listening to these live versions) The energy just wasn't there on the album versions. I was an energetic 10 year old kid with a tennis racket in his hand doing the windmill. I wanted the loudest, most mean sounding rock possible. Now that I am 50, I've gained an appreciation for the album versions, but I still marvel at the excitement these songs provided me when I was a child. To say that I was obsessed with this band when I was 10 would be a huge understatement. The Who was my first love in rock 'n roll.

Incredible 1970s live performance! The video quality is amazing!

Classic! Pete having too much fun, Roger set on stun, Thunderfingers laying down the bottom end, and Mooney looking quite sober.

GREAT PERFORMANCE. One of the best I've ever seen... especially the outstanding recording!!!

What a great collision of four tremendous and varied talents, combined to create, in my opinion, the greatest music of the post-Beatles era. The creativity of Pete, the superb musicianship of John, the fierce vocals of Roger, and the percussive craziness of Keith. This video could not be more representative.

Simply amazing! Everyone focuses on Roger and Pete, but John and Kieth are ANIMALS! John’s playing is always spot on and Kieth was incredible, always impeccable time. And that, with headphones taped to his skull so he could hear the synth parts! Love The Who.

He was having a hard time locking to the synth part, which in that day with crap phones and monitors, i get it, but he also mess a couple changes up.. so no on your always impeccable time ... he never had that. Good energy. and some very cool parts... thats it

There's something wrong with the algorithm. This has been up for a decade, just came onto my feed and it has just 136k views and 1.5k likes.

Probably because this isn't an official channel. It's a guy with relatively few subscribers (2.7K is a lot, but not huge), and I'm surprised it hasn't been taken down for copyright violation. Maybe these days they just put in ads and let the revenue go to ASCAP.

What really makes this "1979" video so AMAZING is that Keith Moon died in 1978.

THIS was the only version of Baba O'Riley I've ever known. I bought the soundtrack to "The Kids Are Alright" as a high school freshman, and this was the version on the album. The studio version sounds so tame and quiet in comparison, but the classic rock radio stations where I lived ALWAYS played the studio version, which I always felt was criminal. This live version has all the raw energy and power and LIFE that Rock and Roll should always have. Long Live Rock!
