One of my favorite things about Barret is that he's flawed in a way that keeps him from realizing what a good man he actually is. We see many times that he's got a tendency to binary, either-or thinking such that he believes his desire for revenge means that he must not really care about defending the planet, when in fact that desire is what pushed him over the threshold into action to protect it against Shinra, and to give Marlene a livable planet to have a future on. In the end, though, he does manage to realize himself that he is ultimately fighting to protect something, the tiny piece of the planet he loves and the legacy from his old life, whom he saved from the atrocity he couldn't prevent before. He already protected her once, and he'll continue to do so with everything he has. Marlene's lucky to have someone so passionate, earnest, likeable, caring, dutiful, and often pensive and humble for a dad.

I'm watching through a series where someone explains some of the differences between the Japanese and English text. Here are a couple Barrett nuggets I've picked up: He first admits his motivation for avalanche was revenge rather than environmentalism at the campfire scene. It plants the seed for his airship speech. Although the English text implies he had a normal prosthetic and later changed to a gun, the Japanese says he carried on with his crippled arm for a bit then went straight to gun. It's a fascinating series.

Thank you for talking about one of my two favorite characters in FFVII (the other being Cid). I liked him immediately from his design and mannerisms and then grew to love him as his story progressed (Dyne's confrontation, the Mountain scene, and his revelation near the end being my favorite scenes). There's so much that's broken about him being just a regular man (comparatively) being in a larger than life world while still trying to be a good dad to his practically adopted daughter. The fact that he is also a well-done black character for FF's first attempt is an added bonus. Sometimes I feel he can get pretty overshadowed due to other characters having the spotlight but hopefully when FFVIIR comes around more people will understand how cool he is.

This rocks! Thanks for compiling Barret's story line. Subscribed. I hope it won't detract from that applause if I point out one point in your analysis that confused me. I haven't understood yet how Barret's Mideel doubts about Cloud/"Sephiroth's shadow" were because Barret misunderstood what was going on with Cloud and could have known better. I was following along with your analysis that Barret had been noticing the inconsistencies in Cloud's story and self-control, but chose to believe in him anyway. Barret believed (naively) that he would be able to snap Cloud out of it if needed. Since (even if Barret had personally been guarding it) Cloud did give Sephiroth the Black Materia, and since neither Cloud nor Tifa can explain consistently who Cloud has been any longer, then Barret's voicing doubts about Cloud seems sadly shrewd to me. It wouldn't have seemed irrational nor out of character had Barret been angry that Cloud helped summon Meteor. As best I recall, any other party member there at Mideel when you find Cloud expresses things like, "Well, I'm sure everything will be okay" which (while probably just filler since it's not that important a moment) smells more of denial than of attentive understanding of Cloud's circs to me. I could be misunderstanding the video or the game on that, but a potential comment discussion could support the video, which I did enjoy altogether :)

Playing this game growing up, I had always ignored Barret being a angsty teen who only thoought spikey haired anime protagonists, big boobed martial artists and vampire gunmen were cool. But as I got older, I decided to really invest in Barret's character. He always just kind of came out to be a loud roughian to me on the surface but really, he's a deep character with a pretty tragic backstory. The scene where he finally faces Dyne in the Desert Prison always hit me in the feels hard and realizing that he took in Marlene becuase of this and only wants the best for her and her future (which is why he's so obsessed with saving the planet) really made him a favorite of mine. Besides that, he's actually a really cool character in battle too. Ungermax and Catastrophe are really cool looking attacks that do some pretty awesome damage.

One of my favorite moments is his fight with Dyne, a very underrated moment is his admittance that hes not cut out to be leader. What makes FF7 so special is every single character grows so much, nobody ends the game the same person. FF15 had a s cast and not nearly as deep as this one. Having platinumed the remake it truly made me fall in love with the world and its characters all over again.
@themilkman50044 жыл бұрын
Steven Finlayson I think the problem with FF15 was all these characters grew up with each other so they have a sense of familiarity that we the audience don’t know about. Yeah there’s the supplementary material but most people wouldn’t look up that. I think the charm final fantasy has is just a bunch of random people come together to save the world
@mrdarkstar37564 жыл бұрын
@@themilkman5004 good point but it sucks for people that just want to play the game, absorbing the extra content sucks. I find it funny the game reads "An FF for fismrst timers and long time faithful fans" people can have a long history off screen but the people playing it comes across empty, they start as friends and retainers for Noctis and end as that because they are now even better friends that's not an arc lol. I didnt watch the anime or play the DLC so maybe it's way better now but as the game is it's very flat.

There is nothing else like them out there- at least that I know of. I always learn something new and they really illustrate the depth of character development that exists in FF7. Character development is something that's always brought up when talking about the strengths of FF7 as a game. So much so that it's almost lost meaning to me. Whenever I watch one of these I become acutely aware of exactly why character development is FF7s crowning achievement.

20:52 - I'd argue that Yuffie's Conformer is the best Ultimate Weapon in the game - not necessarily pure damage wise, but for two key reasons - - It negates the 90% damage reduction when using the Morph command materia, allowing Yuffie to inflict full damage with Morph 2. It only inflicts 1 point of damage on allies, including Yuffie herself. This is perfect if Yuffie or other party members become confused - if Yuffie is confused, she's not going to be doing any serious damage to allies, and if she attacks herself, she'll simply snap out of confusion after taking just the one point of damage. if another party member is confused, you can have Yuffie attack them, inflicting one damage and ending the confusion effect

Great video! Played FF7 10x over the years and it’s so amazing to still pull back layers to understand more of what’s going on. You mentioned to comment requests for future in-depth-what about ShinRa? Origins of Avalanche were interesting in context, but it could be really compelling to get all the in-universe ShinRa history and key players in a condensed format like this. Also, in-depth Sephiroth, Hojo, maybe even Summons? I know Summons don’t quite have the framing in-universe as in FFXV (your favorite), but maybe there’s some overlap in the “ancient knowledge” aspect of mako->materia without ya know, making stuff up. As always your work is superb. Keep it up!
