I liked it better when it was called "Magicite." It may not have been nearly as versatile, but it actually made wondrous items significant. You could buy Materia in the slums of Midgar, where the Mako was supposedly so drained that it would be impossible to form new Materia naturally. Magicite couldn't be bought in stores until after the seal of the Esper world was broken. Magicite evoked a sense of wonder. Materia was one letter off from being mundane.

@@TinyFoxTom I'm confused you dislike a game mechanic because you can buy all but the rarest of versions throughout the game, but like a game mechanic because you're locked out of it until partway through. In the slums its polluted because it's under the disk, not because there's no make, it's under a reactor which is drawing mako to the area in fact. I get wanting to push your favorite games into a conversation but make sure you're right.

I love games that have lots of spells and abilities you collect as items scattered/hidden all over so it's certainly my favorite but isn't done enough for some reason. Suikoden Runes are kinda similar and awesome as well.

You can also use Elemental pairing to heal yourself. ex: If you absorb fire damage, you can put the fire elemental combination to your weapon and attack yourself with a basic attack to heal.

@@ar_marium1125 There was a few items that did massive damage if you threw them at the right enemy, but it was never better than everything else. Also, it flat damage based, so it suffered less from defense and does higher damage early game.

I saw a build with elemental and added effect with specific materia in both weapon and armor. The guy could attack himself, and recover as if using an elixir. It was the craziest materia combo I had ever seen

I havent done it in years but if I remember correctly, Equipping Elemental=Poison to your Armor will protect you against poison too BUT if you get the poison debuff it can absorb it and work like regen ;)

lol "i actually broke the gil counter" in game for anyone wondering, that means the gil counter will crunch on itself and show you some odd number below the time. mine was also broken after my first playthrough and my time was red as well iirc. 99:99:99 but red numbers. it was a wild time. too bad my memory card with taht save is long gone lol. would of been nice to have it today.

Wouldn't the most powerful combination be seven sets of counter=mime and a hp mp swap? With a high magic stat and another party member w-summon KOTR precursor, this combo should respond with 14 summons of KOTR totalling 1,819,818 damage.

Morph still most powerful materia. Turbo eithers, mega elixirs, sources for days. At max strength after the temple, you will do ~4000-5000 per hit... When you would normally not be doing more than 700 or so. And there are 3 sources that relatively available at that point. Power source from heavy tank in gongalga reactor and guard and speed sources from a few small islands reached from the tiny bronco. Also the mechs outside Midgard that use matra magic morph into x potions or elixirs if i remember correctly.

I know that the magic counter materia could be paired with phoenix summon materia. W-Summon could be paired with Master Summon Materia and coupled with Hades Summon Materia paired with MP Absorb Counter Materia. All of them are mastered.

This is awesome and I will try the last with a minor change. Highwind hits 3 more times than Omnislash if I remember right. With maxed stats, each hit would do 9,999 damage and do more damage than Omnislash. 12 year old me is so proud right now.

Cover/Counter/Knights of the Round on all characters......only combo you need right there. Another good one is: Sneak Attack/Hades or, Added Effect/Hades in armor if you want a bootleg Ribbon accessory Finally Cover/Counter /Counter /Command/Counter Deathblow will carry you through the game. Most Damage is: KOTR/W-Summon/Mime..... pretty much every character caste KOTR until the run out of magic once 1 character caste it first.

Cover on all characters is like Cover on nobody, that doesn't increase your chance to counter. You don't run out of MP nor summon power if you Mime. Except if you have several Counter + Mime.

Some of the last combos here are just insane (mostly cause of the grinding time it will need). If you just want to make a cool playthrough without farming for hundreds of hours, and still want a way to make quite good damages, you can combine 5 (can try 8, should work too) mastered counter-attack materia (not too hard to have) and one mastered mime+counter combo on Barret ultimate weapon, which will make it deal 9999 each hit. On every physical attack on him, Barret will counter 5 (8) times, then mime those 5 (8) counter-attacks. That's a good and quite easy 99 990 (159 984) Damages. Enough to get rid of most bosses, even Safer Sephiroth.

Counter + Mime becomes pretty weak when used along Counter-Attacks, as it just copies Counter-Attack (whether you placed it before or after them). If you can copy KotR or a multi-hits Limit Break, you'd deal more damage by removing the Counter-Attacks. A character can have 8 triggers. The rest is ignored.

Using Mime you can counter with any attack in the game. Be aware that you can't counter limits between characters though. In other words, if you use Omnislash and then trigger mime with another character other than Cloud, it won't work.

I remember testing back when I played this years ago, using multiple sets of Quadramagic and comet. it has some weird stacking, but one casting of comet would cast it i think 7 times with 2 sets, 10 times with 3. Was mostly just for proof of concept, but i think i did 3x quadra magics and an MP turbo comet for 10x castings. Never tested to its fullest like i wanted, but was good fun.

My cloud combo was hp plus mp plus cover counter attack ca CA CA CA CA CA CA ca counter magic linked to ultima quadra linked to ultima. Every random event I got cloud to cover first attack then counter 8 times and cast ultima 4x. Killed everything incredibly fast and turned randoms into auto mode

Great video! I beat the crap out of this game way back when.. I had also found an easy area to level up without worrying about dying it was these bugs that gave you alot of experience I stayed there for days and months. When I did those side quest like in the water I destroyed him. The monster in the sand was tricky because he could make one of your people disappear but I finally managed to overcome him. Sephiroth could not handle me I attacked him with the mime and it was over. The only thing I feared the most in this game was that little creature I think he was in a mountain and he swang a lamp back and forth saying things and if he got close you were dead. I think you had it in your video.

You missed some stuff. Ever go to your status page and notice the other elemental attacks like wind and holy? Well if you put the chocobo summon (red) or typhoon summon you can give your attacks the power of wind. very helpful when fighting things that fly. Now holy comes from the alexander summon and is great against dead things like everything in the shinra mansion. The leviathan summon will give you water attacks but I recommend not using it, because more than half the stuff in the game is immune or absorbs water. Don't use it in the battle arena. very bad idea. Now I am going to really blow your mind. If you kill off your party or just have them defend, but one person and use that persons limit break, and you happen to have a few counter - mimes set up, then if you get hit, your player will do as many limit breaks as you have counter - mimes set up. This really helps when you need to keep using limit breaks to unlock the second limit ability really fast. Sorry to rain on your parade but Knights of the round will still be the best, you just need to set it up right. So do this and you will beat anything in the game with any player doing 1,559,844d amage. Knights of round - MP absorb, Counter - Mime (x6), w-summon. You will do knights of the round 12 times. If you want to put counter - mime on your other players to really make sure its dead then go for it. Now for something SWEEEEEEEET. want the fastest way to grind out those source potions but didn't want to use the w-item glitch because you felt it was cheating... well set this up on Yuffie with her ultimate weapon and head to the sunken (crashed airplane)... under water... dam forgot the name. any way. Mega all - Pre-Emtive, Sneak attack - Morph (x7). This will make Yuffie attack first 7 times to all enemies as the morph attack. I know 7 is sometimes over kill but sometimes you don't get the sneak attack and this will make sure you do. You can match up multiple materias on the same materia and have it do all of them. Like having morph - HP absorb, Morph - MP absorb, Morph - Steal as well and have the mega all so you hit everyone or switch out the morph with death blow but some materia will not work together, like 4x cut and ... well anything else. You also can't use quadra magic with comet. On that note, if you grind like a freak for knights of the round, you can link that summon up with multiple things like HP absorb and MP absorb with Steal as well, plus the w-summon and you become immortal, but by the time you grind out just 3 knights of round your already at level 99 so everything dies very fast anyway. This will bring me to my last part of this, what is the worst materia. Hands down, it's the quadra magic materia. Some of you may like this but when it comes to the really powerful stuff, like pairing it with the enemy skill materia, it doesn't work. You can't even use it with half of your summons and the half you can use it with are the lower end summons. Also it is a very very bad idea to put added cut with manipulate, as soon as you manipulate you attack it and it isn't under control any more. Manipulate does work very well with steal as well though. I almost think it has a 100% chance to steal or close to it, but it could be because I have maxed out my players. Also steal as well doesn't work with steal. I wanted to try to steal twice in case the first steal doesn't work. Doesn't work. Now I did find this, steal - sneak attack does work, and I paired 2 more steal materias with HP absorb and MP absorb. This is where the stuff will link but it wont. As the battle starts you will do a pre-emtive attack as mug or steal, but you wont get the HP or MP absorb until you use steal or mug on your turn. This is a common thing in this game even with counter - mime. You can't keep getting HP and MP absorb when you counter with another steal. It would be as an enemy hits you, you counter with filling your HP and MP back up, doesn't work. BONUS TIME: ever wonder if there is an easy way to catch a chocobo? well look no more. put an Exit materia with a sneak attack and you start the battle doing the remove spell. This will remove all enemies but leave the chocobo. No greens needed. Your Welcome.

There's a few errors but that's a long and nice comment! "Knights of the round will still be the best " It's a 13 hits attack while best Limits are 15 and 18 hits. KotR is better only when the those Limits deal less damage than KotR, in other words against Ruby especially (or if you really hate Sahagins for example lol). "Knights of round - MP absorb, Counter - Mime (x6), w-summon. You will do knights of the round 12 times." Only 5 times, not 12, supposing KotR is mastered and the character already used KotR+KotR before countering. Then he'll run out of Summon Power and out of MP. This is because only the first Mime of the counter chain is free of MP, free of Power use and keeps effects like MP Absorb. The following Mimes don't do that. You can replace KotR by Master Summon for unlimited Summon Power or use 1 character for KotR and 1 for Mimes. You also need Add HPMP to cast all the non-free KotR. Then it will work the 12 times. "Mega all - Pre-Emtive, Sneak attack - Morph (x7). This will make Yuffie attack first 7 times to all enemies as the morph attack. " Note that even if you're ambushed or back-attacked, Sneak Attacks will still occur first and the fight will be probably finished, especially if these Sneak Attacks are mastered. So don't hesitate to switch Pre-Emptive with something more useful: Enemy-Lure, EXP Plus, Gil Plus, etc. "morph - HP absorb, Morph - MP absorb, Morph - Steal as well and have the mega all so you hit everyone or switch out the morph with death blow but some materia will not work together, like 4x cut and ... well anything else." You can't by direct pairing, indeed. However, it does using Master Command instead: pairing HP/MP Absorb / Steal as Well / Added Cut to Master Command grants these effects to compatible commands but also Attack / 2x-Cut / 4x-Cut / Slash-All / Flash / Item / W-Item. "You also can't use quadra magic with comet." They're compatible actually. With Comet, it works normally like any single target spell. With Comet2, it can end after an enemy died. My guess is that's because Quadra still selects a target randomly as usual, except you can't know which one since Comet2 can randomly hit other targets. Then if the initial target of Quadra dies, Quadra ends as usual, even if Comet2 could have hit other targets. That's a very nice combo against a single enemy... or if you're not unlucky. "You can't even use [quadra magic] with half of your summons " You can use it with any Summon but KotR and any Magic but Escape. "Also it is a very very bad idea to put added cut with manipulate " I'd say that's not a good combo but not a very bad idea neither. xD A manipulated target can't dodge and eventually wastes time. With Hypnocrown, that's 100% accuracy on targets not immune to Manipulate. If you're lucky with timing, you even should be able to give an order to the enemy before the added cut, so that's still one enemy attack you can redirect on the enemies. Just wanted to mention this is still better than a simple attack, though I can't disagree there are tons of better combos. "Manipulate does work very well with steal as well though. I almost think it has a 100% chance to steal or close to it" Stealing sadly doesn't check if the target is manipulated nor stopped, paralyzed, petrified, sleeped or whatever. It's only based on your level and if you have Sneak Glove. "steal - sneak attack does work, and I paired 2 more steal materias with HP absorb and MP absorb. This is where the stuff will link but it wont. As the battle starts you will do a pre-emtive attack as mug or steal, but you wont get the HP or MP absorb until you use steal or mug on your turn. This is a common thing in this game even with counter - mime." Same with Added Cut, Steal as Well and MP Turbo (except the MP extra cost). But the first Counter / Final Attack + Mime do keep these effects. Wasn't it why you paired KotR with MP Absorb in your combo above? "ever wonder if there is an easy way to catch a chocobo? well look no more. put an Exit materia with a sneak attack " Odin is nice too. It's slightly less than 100% chance of success (unless paired with MP Turbo) but doesn't require 10000 AP and doesn't skip the rewards. (And Death + All have a pretty terrible chance to work.)

I did the 8 mastered counter attack’s back in the day. Try equipping them on Yufi with her final weapon, which does damage based on the level of the enemy. I was counter attacking emerald weapon with 8 hits of 9,999

Not sure how much value there is in putting this comment on a nearly-six-year-old video, but maybe folks are running nostalgia playthroughs because of the remake, so here ya go: - Time+Added Effect also inflicts Stop to those vulnerable to it; - Barrett's Ungarmax does better than Omnislash with the Counter-Mime combo if you load Missing Score with high-exp mastered Materia (no overflow needed) - that's 18 hits of 9999, and it's more consistent than Cloud doing 9999 damage with each slash. Not to mention, the animation is much faster; - I'm sure people already know, but Mega All + Master Command makes a good combo, and they don't even need to be paired. You can pair Master Command with a suitable Support Materia to your taste. I use it for Morph-All on Barrett (or Yuffie) to Morph whole enemy parties in one shot; - Odin + Sneak Attack + Preemptive gives you an FF8 Zantetsuken-style summon; - When grinding North Cave, I find it convenient to have Hades + Added Effect on a 4x Cut user. It's mostly for the darn Tonberry King - you get the Stop effect, safe from Everybody's Grudge, and the animation of the 4 swings is much faster than if it was active; - If you're on a non-grind or low-grind playthrough, using Demi + Quadra Magic + W-Magic on Emerald (and IIRC works for Ruby, too) is more efficient than opening with Knights of Round, especially if you only have 1 or 2 levels on KOR. You can deal eight shots of 9999 damage with Demi (and the animation is a billion times faster so you won't have to waste a Materia slot for Underwater) then you can move to Knights when Demi 3 is dealing under 5 or 6k, depending on your threshold preference;

@@Dylan-xx2io The remake lacked a LOT of materia, and imposed stupid limits on some of the materia (like mp plus only stacking to 100% max boost). And there's only like 4 or 5 summons, and they basically are only allowed in boss fights. It's a very scaled-down version of the materia system of the original. The next installments basically HAVE to expand on it

Bruno Costa I learned about some of the hectic materia combos around 99/2000 when searching the internet to beat ruby. it this day I still never beat emerald. it's easy to watch a video detailing how to make omnislash and knights of the round wreck... it's another thing to get that many mime and counter materias lol

JagEagleAC3 good luck! with some of these combos it shouldn't be a problem. There's a glitch you can use with Vincent if he has his death penalty weapon. but it requires he makes lots of kills with it.

+4-8Productions I've always wanted to play FFVII but I don't have a PlayStation or an IPad 3. Even still when I found out about the usage of materia I was extremely confused about which materia does what, how exactly do you use it, and some useful combinations (I would be more about perseverance and status infliction/resistance than raw firepower). After seeing this video, you helped me understand some aspects of it. I have FFIV on my IPad 2 and I can see how augments relate to materia in a basic sense. It's not much to ask, but could you do a video about how materia works for beginners? It would be most appreciated for me and others who have just acquired a copy.

I've mastered this game forwards and backwards and you've got some interesting ideas. But here's one you didn't mention that I think is completely broken: Mastered Command + HP Absorb || Mastered Command + MP Absorb || Double Cut (4x Cut) + Long Range This materia combo will allow you to 4x Cut from max range without losing damage as well as heal you for 4k and restore 400 MP to you after every 4x Cut. This is so broken that I am almost certain Square probably didn't mean for Mastered Command to work this way. I love it though. I can literally defeat every boss in the game simply by 4x Cutting. Emerald and Ruby included. Hope someone enjoys this combo. It's a blast......if you don't mind the game being to stupid easy to beat LOL. Happy Fantasies!

I mean you can't get this combo before the end of the game and to get Master Command you need to either beat an optional postgame boss or grind an absurd amount of time. It's completely ok for this to trivialise everything else.

Part of the reason I like the Materia system is because they clearly didn't account for every enumerated possibility on the mathematical combinations lol so creativity mattered and they didn't quite limit every stackable option to break the game.
