48v Monster Secondary Alternator! 5 Kilowatt Beast! | VANLIFE VLOG

Today I installed a 48V secondary alternator from Nations Alternator. This beast had to be governed down from its initial bench testing because it put out too much power. Regulated, It will push 5,000 Watts (5KW) into my house system if and when I need it.
The custom bracketing from Nations make installation relatively easy, so we installed it into the van with plans to connect it completely when the interior is finished and electrical can be wired in.
I also made a mistake on the windows… one of many with that project.
And Just Roaming Design took delivery of a few pallet loads of a cool material they will use to create innovative in floor heating solutions. They are going to help me to install one of their heated floor systems in my van later.

I am doing the same installation for a truck that will be built in China. 2nd alternator 48V with WS500 regulator. Take attention to the pulley ! The faster the alternator turns, the more power and the more cooling !! If it turn too slow, the alternator heats up and the regulator will lower its power. So to get your 5000W .... it depends on the right pulley. Most alternators accept max 6000 rpm what must be equal with the max rpm of the engine for example 4000 rpm. Normally your engine will have about 1500-2000 rpm, that means your alternator will turn at 2250-3000 rpm... it will give you only about 60%-70% of your 5000W !

Adding a second alternator is really easy on the transit. The 3.5 ecoboost is already setup for everything to bolt right on and the second belt setup is already there. Great video. That alternator is a beast.

Would be interested to know what the output of the alternator is while the vehicle is stationary with the engine idling? I guess it depends on the idling speed of the engine...

You are right. The Australians have been doing 48v from day one. It’s funny you bring up Safiery. The Scotty is a rebranded Wakespeed WS3000. All their products are rebranded.

Have you had any problems with the solid state pulley? They weren't able to use a clutch type pulley with this alternator, so I've been dragging my feet on installing it. I actually was the first person to order this kit and pay for it all the way back in February of 2020 if you can believe it. But it took forever because they couldn't get a clutch pulley to work, and after hearing that I wanted some other users to try it out first. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated. I only vaguely need this kit after installing 1110W of solar. But every now and then I do need extra power, like long periods of very cloudy weather in the hot summer months, or if I have to be parked under tree shade. Aside from those occasions I'm net positive solar even with 24/7 climate control via a 42 SEER minisplit a/c.

What kind of battery you used for your RV? I was told that special lithium battery has to be selected, that means only nations certified battery can be used with their 48v alternator. What kind of battery should be?

I have 4 x 12 v x 200ah Victron lithium batteries to get 48v

honestly... the wakespeed 3000 was a total bust. Wakespeed sold their company and so the 3000 was scrapped as a product they sell and service. I ended up swapping it with a 500 to manage the alternator.
