Thanks for such amazing detailed advice! Your videos are a huge help to so many people and I thank you for that. I have a specific question about fuse sizing and wondered if you would be so kind as to help? I am using a 12v to 5v converter to power some USB strip lights in the van. When sizing the fuse for this, should I consider the spec / requirements of the converter alone, or the converter and USB lights combined. In essence I am using a converter 12v DC to 5v (two female USB ports) to power an appliance 'permanently'. I really appreciate your time and assistance! Many thanks

This is absolutely brilliant. As someone who barely scraped an A-Level Physics 40 years ago and is now wishing I'd listened now closely (as I'm wiring my home solar/van system), I have to say that this is so well presented and explained that this should be a model for all such videos on KZbin! Greg explains this all so clearly and at such a great (medium) pace that it neither loses you (by going too fast) nor makes you fall asleep (too slow)! Also, no unnecessary background music! Great job greg - Thanks! -)

I'm not sure if you've covered this elsewhere, but another thing to factor into the wire size choice is voltage drop. Especially on 12v systems you can drop a significant percentage of volts over modest cable runs and loads.

I have come back and re watched this video each time I come back to do more work on my van; I have ALWAYS hated electrics! Someone starts explaining something and my brain goes into overload EVERY single time :-( !!! Also met this guy once in person he is simply and A1 person; too bloke, too videos, we are incredibly lucky to have you Greg! Great vid Greg, thank you. With any wiring installation, it’s sometimes hard to understand how much energy builds up within the cable when appliances are switched on. Your clip showing a wires heating and subsequently melt/combust shows what could potentially happen behind the insulation in a van. Therefore your visual demonstration and clear cabling sizing chart will enable us all to sleep safely. Cheers!
@GregVirgoe

Obviously the video clip was very dramatic but hopefully it emphasises the importance of having the right size cables in your van. Like you say most are buried where you can’t see them so you don’t know until it’s too late. Electrical faults cause many fires in houses and campers. Thanks for all your support it’s really appreciated. 👍🏼

Excellent video, Greg. Here in the “States” I tend to use a split conduit. Similar to the conduit you showed but with a slit opening the full length. I find it quite a bit easier to install (after the fact) than the coiled loom you showed, although I sometimes use that too.

Hi Greg, good information for all the busy lockdowners! Regarding the 230v side of things, remember BS7671 states that 230v circuits need overload protection that breaks all live conductors in a caravan or mobile home. I'm sure you know that on 230v the neutral is also a live conductor so that means double-pole mcb's.. This means that your 230v distribution boards can get quite big as we usually have battery charge circuits, water heating and sometimes electric space heating for when hooked up. And watch out for rcbo's as most are still single pole break operation, not double pole as required. Keep up the good work

Great info. The electrical is the only part of the build that intimidates me. Having a dedicated playlist for this is a great idea. Really interesting info about the difference in the current being within an insulated wall vs on the outside of the wall. My plan is to put the wiring outside of the wall so having this info is super helpful. Thanks so much!
@GregVirgoe
@GregVirgoe 4 жыл бұрын
Yes I thought it was very relevant as lot of people, me included have buried cables in walls and because they are not in free air and potentially can be hotter you are not allowed to run as much current through them. Makes a big difference to the figures.

David Lisken this video in conjunction with my latest wiring schematics and full system video should give you a great basis to go with. Most appliances need a positive and negative. A fuse in the positive. The right size cable and maybe a switch for control. When you break it down it becomes very logical and easier to understand. Good luck with your build.

Nicely done Greg, I wonder how many vans have you to credit so far! Just one small point to correct, if you put several (equal) lamps in series they'll divide the potential equally. As a result the first won't be any brighter than the rest - they'll all be equally dim! 12v ÷ 4 lamps 3v drop per lamp, i.e.1/4 of the12v required for full brightness.
@gora6045
@gora6045 Ай бұрын
11:16 I completely agree with you. Several equal lamps in series - they'll all be equally dim. For eight lamps serial: 12v ÷ 8 lamps = 1,5v drop per lamp, i.e.1/8 of the12v required for full brightness. But Greg is an engineer, he knows better ;)

I really appreciate the fact that you take the time to explain this stuff. In particular the safety side, like not using solid core wire. This is overlooked very often. I wanted to add that when using multicore wires it is important to use the right connectors. Make sure they are rated for the correct current. But also that the stripped end of the wire is properly clamped in the connector. There should be no exposed copper (cores), as over time some of the cores can break and could fall out and cause a short. Use heat-shrink and or heat-shrink to prevent any cores from falling out. Especially in areas with sensors. At 11:20 you are right that this is not the proper way to wire it, however the explanation is not correct. Assuming all 8 lights are the same each light would have the same voltage potential across it. The first light would have 12V (with respect to ground) at the positive lead. The negative lead would be 10.5V (with respect to ground). So the voltage potential across the light would be 1.5V. This is the same for all the lights. Since the lights are wired in series, the current is also equal for each light. This means all the lights will be equal brightness. In the case of a regular light bulb all lights would be very dim, but the same brightness. When using LEDs (like in the example picture) the lights would probably not turn on at all, since leds are diodes that require a minimum voltage to operate.

One minor mistake on the USB sockets that 3.1 amps @ 5v not 12 but still you have plenty of margin for error since more volts equals less amps.

@@GregVirgoe Hey Greg first of all thank you for sharing all your knowledge on so many different topics with us. There are so many things that needs to be considered regarding a van conversion that it's virtually impossible not overseeing something but with your series of detailed videos I think many people have found a starting point and help. I found your explanations on the insulation very interesting. Beside that the safety thing depends on one's point of view. The question that needs to be answered is what the fuse is meant for. In your example the fuse is chosen correct to save the wiring it fail its purpose however if it comes to saving any device. For example let's assume you have a malicious phone charger on one USB port. This charger will drain 15 or 20 amps and light up before the fuse will break the circuit. Daisy chaining these sort of things makes the wiring easy but you should keep an eye on build in fuses in each component.
@kieranragan6641
@kieranragan6641 4 жыл бұрын
Not exactly true. Amps = Watts / Volts, therefore regardless whether you supply 12V or 5V to the USB socket, the only thing that will change is amount of Watts the appliance will use. These USB sockets contain a buck converter to lower the voltage down to 5V. The Amps used by the appliance will still stay the same regardless of what Voltage you supply it, the only thing that will change is how many watts of power the buck converter within the appliance uses to convert the voltage, which is most likely why the product is rated in amps and not watts, because it can be fed a variable voltage. He did exactly the right thing here when deciding on cable thickness and fuse rating 👍

In the bus we're re-converting there are already AGMs which we decided to hook up to solars and try out before considering the lithium expense...but if we do in the future decide to switch to lithium batteries, is it a major electrical restructure or something more manageable in the ready vehicle? I'm assuming it's not the case of just swapping the batteries? So refreshing to find a down-to-earth, knowledgeable and generous person willing to share their years of experience in many fields that most of us didn't realize we would find so valuable back when we were either tapping on computers for a living or digging ditches! Your videos explain things right from the first step to the last, paced in a way that we can absorb, while giving a clear understanding as to the connections between one thing and the next, and the reasons why. Added to that, the rationale for all the pitfalls many fall in to by trying to outsmart physics and taking short-cuts. I'm recommending all my aging 'back to basics' friends to watch your videos. I have been binge watching your videos as you present the topic content very well, great job. Initially I searched for 'how to insulate a van correctly' as there seem to be many view points, so it was great to see your view supported by factual and mathematical data. I am an electrician in Australia therefore different regulations than you have there, so you are 100% correct in pointing out that anyone watching needs to refer to their local regulations, as Australia has many differences (mostly minor) than what you have presented. One thing to keep in mind when you referred to the wiring table, is that the tendency in van builds to to bundle all of the wires very closely and tightly together, therefore this has an effect on 'electrical heating ' of the cables by the current flowing in adjacent cables.......therefore it is mostly wise to go bigger if in doubt, and/or to try to segregate your higher current draw cable runs.
