After I realized that the sticker capacity and the usable capacity were different, I made sure that Bigbattery. com updated their listing before posting this video. I think it would be unfair to list a 1.9-2kwh battery as 2.8kwh. So they changed it. Also updated the pictures because some forum members complained about that. I am not a big fan of Nissan Leaf batteries, as you can probably tell. And with the updated capacity and price being $599 (before my coupon code), a tesla pack is actually cheaper. But this comes with it's own bms. So yeah, quite a few pros and cons. What I am excited for, is the BYD LiFePO4 battery they sent me. Unfortunately, many forum members are reporting 3kwh of usable capacity, not 5kwh. So I will have test results on my pack tomorrow and let you guys know. If those cells work well, we will have an awesome plug-n-play second life storage pack. I have no idea how well it will work. What do you think? Was my assessment of nissan leaf cells fair? I know a lot of people use these, so I was trying to be more objective. It is easy for me to go into rant mode with a used NMC pack with 65% of original capacity, but I know some applications warrant their use. I worked with them on using a Gen2 pack to replace my Ryobi electric riding mower batteries. They were helpful and responded to all of my questions. Pack just fit inside the mower and has been working great. I did purchase the charger from them, which failed after a few months and they refunded my money after I sent it back. For me, I felt they were great to work with and were honest about what the battery was capable of delivering. The price wasn’t that much more compared to replacing it with the Ryobi AGM batteries, which were out of stock for months. Now I can mow my lawn (1/2 acre) without issues and the pack has held up well for the last 6 months. So far so good.

I had an original 2011 Nissan Leaf. When I first got the car I could go about 75 miles in the summer with the air on at 55 to 60 mph. It was pretty consistent for the first two years. I did notice a bit of a drop during the last part of the second year and a faster drop the last year. I had 36,000 miles on the vehicle when I turned it in and it was not able to even do 48 miles at 55 mph at that mileage. We are very hot out here and the degradation was real bad. Nissan still would not honor the battery warranty issue even though it would not do even 48 miles at 55 mph. They purchased the car back at a very good price so I gave the 2015 model a try but leased that one. After 3 years I had 36,000 or so miles and I saw no degradation in capacity with the new pack. They did some changes in the battery and some call it a lizard battery in that they do not degrade badly in hot weather. I was very pleased with that. I did let it go back to the dealer. I eventually purchased a Fiat 500e. 44,000 miles and nearly the original capacity. Damn good cells in that car. If the original 2011 and 2012 cells don't get too hot then they should do just fine. I'll do a capacity check when I get one of those capacity testers you have. My Leaf modules are from a very low mileage 2011 Leaf. They have held up well in storage so I will test capacity. I have been calculating at 50ah per module vs the original 62 or what ever it is. I'll do a capacity check at like .5c. That should be just about right. Still waiting on my BMS.

It looks like these Battery Packs are made from "Generation 1" Nissan Leaf batteries. These are the 2011 and 2012 year Leafs. They could not handle the heat very well and in 2013 Nissan came out with the "Lizard" batteries which supposedly did much better under heat usage. I think Nissan had to replace a lot of these under warranty.

I am sure that in each generation of the Leaf, the batteries are improving. But none of them were near as bad as the 2011 and 2012 years. All you have to do to proof this is to check the selling price, and look at the battery monitor 12 bar status on the Leaf's dash. The early 2011-2012 batteries were far inferior even to the 2013 years. These 2 years are very inexpensive to purchase compared to the 2013 and up (yes the 2013 and 2014 are pretty inexpensive too, but not nearly as so).

The nice thing with these is not needing a low-temperature cutoff unless someone is going to use them in conditions down below 0F/-17.8C. Can't do that with LiFePo4 and can't do that with Tesla cells, but Nissan operates them down that low before heating back up to the mid-teens F. They don't move power easily down at those temperatures, but at least they don't self-destruct.

not really an anderson powerpole connector, that's an anderson 50amp sb series connector. powerpoles are individual modular connectors that clip together to make any configuration that you need. the sb connectors are used on forklifts and other electric equipment and are color matched so only the same color connectors will mate together. the common color coded ones are: yellow=12vdc, red=24vdc, grey=36vdc and blue=48vdc. there are other colors for higher voltages and ones for oddball voltages like 18vdc and 32vdc as well.

6:52 I think you might be overselling the flammability concerns of NCM chemistry too much, and it's worth noting that Tesla uses NCA chemistry in their Powerwalls, which has been found to be far more volatile than NCM. The most common NCM batteries on the market at the moment are from the Bolt EV, i3, and LEAF, and I am not aware of a single battery fire associated with any of those vehicles. Yes, caution should be advised when constructing new battery packs, but spending nearly two minutes on the subject of NCM fires only to conclude with "no one should use them" seems a bit harsh.

I think the usefulness is based on how long the battery will last and how fast and how much it degrades. If I plan my system based on 65% capacity and after two years I only get 55% capacity that would be a huge loss. It’s hard to judge without knowing how the capacity curve goes down. But I also think it’s a good investment to buy new LiFePO and just use them for 20+ years. By that time it’s anyone’s guess what type of magic batteries we will have. But one thing is for sure, two sets of batteries will outlive me.

So I looked at the big battery website and I saw the Nissan Leaf complete battery (G1) and I noticed it had a whopping 24KWH. Would this work for a solar battery?

You might contact the seller, explain your system and ask them. Or do some intensive research to determine what would work for you.

I can't find these any where... ANyone having any luck ? Or a link to the Tesla equivalent ?
@niffrig4 жыл бұрын
Tesla NCA battery chemistry is more susceptible to thermal runaway than this NMC chemistry. This is why Tesla Powerwalls use NMC chemistry. Personally I would still use LiFePO4 for this application.

I agree
@vtorsi6104 жыл бұрын
NO, those Nissan Leaf Modules are NOT NMC Chemistry, they are LMO + Nickel = ( LiMn2O4 with LiNiO2 ) - NO COBALT !!!

Will Great videos and tips have you heard of graphene batteries and what are your thoughts on them ? I been hearing more n more about the chemistry i searched to see if you had done any testing didnt find any.

Is it necessary to use a bms when using two Nissan Leaf modules for a 12 volt Application?
@bellshooter4 жыл бұрын
There are NO used car batteries going into landfill, they are ALL either used for power walls or broken down to provide spares/repairs to existing EV battery packs. The BMS includes cell temperature monitoring on all commercial power walls and are in no way 'dangerous'.
@geraldhenrickson74724 жыл бұрын
None? That is a strong descriptor. No way dangerous? LiFePo4 maybe...There are no guarantees Dave.

I have leaf batteries, I split one so I can run 7s it was really easy, just cut the link, and drill holes, in the tab, up to 1/4" I used 5mm, so the holes were just under 1/4", and ran 8 gauge wire out of the original case, it looks like its original, except for the 8 gauge cable out the top, it can have the original connection for pos from one cell, 8ga from the other,

Does your upcoming LiFePO4 battery weigh 165 pounds by chance? :) I sure hope you like it because I've got 10 of them in my powerwall... can hardly wait to see what you're doing with LiFePO4!

Would this work with the solar edge inverter that supports a battery? I got one assuming I would get a battery later so it has the port it needs.

I want to power a laptop,60W (audio) guitar amp and a 35" TV (this is my outside guitar learning studio) I plan on installing everything in an automobile. I ask for ideas. Like should I replace my AC compressor with a 115 AC generator in addition to an inverter? Looking for ideas to get a steady,clean 10-15 amps of 115V AC. My donor "power station" auto is a 1995 Buick with a 3.8V6. Not too tough to hang the AC generator(2-4000W dual bearing) but after that I am low on ideas. Yes a long extension cord from the house would be easier.
@geraldhenrickson74724 жыл бұрын
You have the ideas...just need to do more research. I would stay low voltage to match a battery pack and put my money in a good inverter. You will need a lot of battery to supply the "house wall outlet" power you seek for very long.

Love your videos Will. Hey Will, minivan Mike referred me. i am installing a 48 volt system in my van. Can i run a wire from the van battery, with an isolator, to a step up transformer, 12v to 48v to charge the battery bank?

My 2011 Leaf's battery has 60% SOH, 35 miles range. Given that it was designed for vehicle to home/grid why not just leave the batteries in the car and use it as a power source. I has it's own battery charger built in. How best to get power from it?? Anyone got ideas?

Ok, so please list those fires that were caused by failed Leaf Modules since you are making the claim. I use Leaf Modules and have not heard or read a single incident. I know of issues of batteries but nothing specific to Leaf Modules.
