I work for a UV technology company specializing in liquid food processing. We may be able to donate some of our "old" unused UV lamps and ballasts if you are interested in increasing the UV dose. I am not sure what the dose of the UV lamp you installed is, but it needs to be sufficiently high, which I assume is the case. I am curious how you took the sample for testing? Typically we take samples where we measure microbes like coliforms e.g E. Coli using a needle syringe, as it is very easy to contaminate a sample. You could also have contaminated the piping from after where you installed the UV lamp so even if you have microbe free water after passing the lamp, it will still get contaminated from the source if e.g the pipes to the kitchen were not cleaned after the system was installed. You could try to chemically clean the piping system from the UV sytem to the kitchen and then retest. The shipment conditions of the sample can also have a big impact if the sample was shipped at a too high temperature, but really you don't want any E. Coli in the water what so ever and they are very UV sensitive, so they should all be inactivated by the lamp which leads me to believe that you have contaminated pipes after the lamp or contamination during sampling. Hope this helps. All the best :)

I agree about contamination remaining in the pipe work. But I have a horrible strong suspicion that contamination is actually getting in from the Well itself through the poorly seated Well cap that's clearly shown in earlier videos. The gaps around the Well are huge & creatures can /will have fallen in & drowned & be decaying in the Well water itself before it even reaches their pipes! This would explain the struggle for the filters & UV to do their jobs. You're right, there should be no ecoli etc. detectable at all in the water after UV sterilisation. I also hope they read my post main post. They need to address underlying issues before thinking about pipes, filters & further testing. Once the Well is properly sealed then cleaned again, the pipes can then be flushed with chlorine & then the water should be fine 👍

Ladder Snake should have two dark lines on it's back, this has one and the tummy coloration and scale formation is also different, from Ladder Snake.. It actually looks somehow like a cross between Grass Snake (tummy dark spots - no clear light collar, but a little lightening there, that Ladder should not have) and a Ladder Snake (only one line and the cheek-V & tear line) - but would those happen?

False smooth snake, is what that's called. Not a Ladder snake. Their fangs are in the back of their throat, believe it or not, so they have to force their prey (lizards and rodents) to the back to envenomate them. Because of this, they pose no risk to humans, and are typically docile whether provoked or not. However, I'd still give them a wide berth and let them on their way.

Hi guys. Great video. I’m going to help you solve a few issues…. 1) your UV light should be on a contractor or relay that only comes on when the pump comes on. I have seen many issues with it staying in and heating too much and cracking the quartz sleeve. If you touch it with your skin the main issue is shade and oil on the glass that will overheat. Handle with new cloth gloves or if by hand wipe it with denaturated alcohol 2) the chloroform you will handle it with GAC (granulated activated carbon. Measure what the LPM is just for the drinking and cooking.. irrigation and showers is fine with chloramines

How about putting the UV on a loop so it’s continually treating the locally stored water? Keeps the unit cool and provides additional exposure?
@lilyy
@lilyy 2 жыл бұрын
@@vaalrus that’s the ideal situation. But for that you need a tank and a second pump. That’s what’s called a squirrel tail system. I believe they have a pump to pump out the well and if they already have a storage tank they can do the uv loop, the uv will also reduce TOC’s When installing the GAC filter install it at outlet don’t do a loop with it, let it soak for 6 hours before using and try to get crushed coconut shells carbon. It’s the best

From the view the snake is eder Grass snake (non venomous ) or Montpelier Snake which is midly venamous but it has a rear fang so its not dangeraus to humans. Looking at the head its a narrow triangilar form which is an indication of non-venomous . Most venomous sankes have wider rear part of th head for the venom glance. + The only real venomous snakes in Portugal are vipers and they have a desting from (far different from this one).

Just a note on the water report you showed. Coliformes Tatais (Total coliform) bacteria are commonly found in the environment (e.g., soil or vegetation) and are generally harmless. Your critical readings for the sub-coliforms of E.Coli and Enterococos (which is fecal coliform) are 0, and the Clostridiums are 0, which are the critical ones to worry about. In your results, since E.coli is absent, but only total coliforms are present, it could mean one of three things: • A layer of bacteria may have developed within your well or plumbing system. This layer of bacteria is called a biofilm. • Surface water may be getting into your well. This increases the risk of animal waste contaminating your water sooner or later. • Your well water may come from an aquifer that contains bacteria. This can happen when groundwater comes from a shallow source. The bottom line is that, while your results may not meet 100% of drinkable water specifications, you are probably fine. Given the state of your old well (not really sealed, etc), if you really want to completely bring the water into drinkable specifications, you'll need to upgrade or add to your water filtration/sterilization process. You could do this in a variety of ways such as adding a secondary UV system to increase the amount of time the water spends under UV light, a filtration system that can remove much smaller elements such as a reverse osmosis system, or by adding a chlorine disinfection system (which you indicated that you did not want to do).
@rodneyholland1867
@rodneyholland1867 2 жыл бұрын
I agree, having worked for municipal water supply systems it is impossible to eliminate total coliforms due to natural biofilm generation in the distribution system. There are no "nasties" (E.Coli, Faecal coliforms etc) in the lab results, so I would feel completely safe drinking this water from a bacteriological point of view.
@DaDunge
@DaDunge 2 жыл бұрын
E coli is not a dangerous bacteria, it's just indicative of fecal matter in the water and is the hardiest of the coliform bacteria hence why we test for it. But there are far more dangerous fecal bacteria than e coli however they are harder to test for and not as hardy.
@rodneyholland1867
@rodneyholland1867 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaDunge E.Coli is both an indicator and a pathogen. E.Coli can cause some very severe sickness... I'm not sure where you get the idea it is "not dangerous".
@DaDunge
@DaDunge 2 жыл бұрын
@@rodneyholland1867 It's what our teachers said when I took a university course on the subject earlier this spring. Thta when we dealt with e coli in the lab the bacterial loads were such that e coli went form a fairly non dangerous bacteria to a much worse one. We have a lake on campus, it's got e coli in it and people swim there all the time and i would estimate than 1/10 manage to swallow water and no one has gotten sick from it as far as I know.
@rodneyholland1867
@rodneyholland1867 2 жыл бұрын
@@DaDunge Interesting your teacher said that. From my experience in drinking water management I don't fully agree. There is some truth in the comment though as many E.Coli can be benign, but there are numerous strains that are dangerous. It can make someone very sick or lead to death in immune compromised. The testing techniques which are the most cost effective do not distinguish between the nasty E.Coli and the benign ones, hence having any detection as being a likely problem... Yes, you are right though about having a large E.Coli load which will increase risk substantially. Without knowing what type of E.Coli it is important to assume it is not a healthy one! In the presence of other faecal indicators it will be a red-flag. Given the lab results for this case show none, I'd be confident drinking this water... if it had E.Coli detections I'd at least boil it before drinking and review the treatment system. There is a hierarchy of pathogens which apply to drinking water the first indicator is Total coliforms, then Thermotolerant Coliforms generally, then E.Coli, then Enterococci, then crypto oocysts. The first on the list are indicators grading into actual problems. Interesting you should mention swimming too, in Australia where I live the guidelines recommend no swimming in town water supply lakes because the amount of pathogens mobilised by swimming is extreme and there is usually a mixture of different pathogens (mainly E.Coli types). It is always good to have a multi-barrier approach to reduce the risk and putting reliance on one system will often lead to a catestrophic failure (there are so many good (bad) case studies from US water treatment failures - thanks USA for doing the mistakes so the rest of the world can learn from it!!!)

Regarding the water filter: I've been hiking for a long time and there is an inexpensive filter that I think could solve your problem, the Sawyer squeeze (not the micro nor the mini) . It is 0.1 microns which is industrial grade and the flow is interesting. It would require the occasional backwash and probably an adaptor to put in the kitchen faucet. The durability of the filter is huge. The biggest inconvenience is that I haven't found it for sale in Europe.

Do what I do in my well .from the last 40 years drop in some ( good) stones of quicklime..... let it rest for 24 / 48 hours and then use a normal filter( I use a brazilian made ceramic/ active carbon filter) and the water will be good to drink and with good taste...."Quicklime in all its forms - quicklime and hydrated lime, as well as calcined dolomite - are the most effective and cost efficient alkaline products used in the making of drinking water, as well as in the treatment of wastewater and sludge. In fact, most of the quicklime that is produced is used to improve the quality of drinking water as well as the water used by industry. Accordingly, lime allows water to be softened, purified, have its cloudiness eliminated, its acidity to be neutralized and its impurities to be eliminated, etc. Because of all these advantages, explained in more detail below, calcium oxide (CaO) and calcium hydroxide (Ca(OH)2) are used in drinking water purification plants. Calcined dolomite (CaO MgO), can also be used in water treatment plants, for example to eliminate silica from water. This is because the magnesium in the dolomite acts as the main reactive agent for the elimination of silica. The use of quicklime and slaked lime is much less common. Thanks to the use of lime in water treatment plants an improvement in the taste, smell and colour of the water is achieved, among other benefits, because suspended matter is eliminated, and therefore any cloudiness is eliminated. Moreover, manganese, fluorides and organic tannins are also eliminated along with the afore-mentioned silica. One of the most important features in this type of application is that of disinfection. When quicklime is added to water to take the pH up to between 10.5-11.00 for a period of between 24 to 72 hours it is possible to lower the quantity of bacteria and viruses in it, at the same time most of the heavy metals dissolved in it are also eliminated. In the same way, the pH of the water can be adjusted, via the use of lime milk, until it becomes suitable for its subsequent treatment in the drinking water plant. "

As an addendum to a past comment. If you UV ALL of the water you use, that will be very nice, but require a VERY large UV system. If however, you merely UV the drinking water, then the small system you have will likely be sufficient. If you UV all the washing water as well, then you will need a larger system. You really should NOT UV the water for the plants, if you continue to use a hose to water your garden.

Great to see the upgrades to the Kamp! Also curious to find out how the UV filter works out... would be great to have an update with a professional & medical assessment of the water's drinkability. I imagine that the filter has an effective flow rate for it to function properly & you may be pushing water too fast for the UV-C rays to kill the bacteria before it gets out of the system. I love learning about the Kampers though I'm a bit sad that they're leaving but am very happy for them & the next leg of their adventure. :D

nice vid! Concerning you drinking water: Adding a uv filter is great but why only 1? should set up 2 of them in series. its not only way more effective but you will have a failsafe. If the only one you have brakes then you will have an issue, when having 2 in series then one will be a back up to cover until you discover by having the shits that its broken? I really suggest 2 of them. To kill ecoli with uv it would need like 30min of exposure to be sure most is dead. So depending on that uv light, if water transfers to quickly it wont do anything. Or you could use reverse osmosis filters (they are available with uv lamps in that as well). The 3rd option, well I know you wouldn't chose for that but I will mention it anyways; chlorine. Also to take into account that having ecoli contaminated water in your mains, basically all your waterlines are now contaminated. So you will need to flush all of the lines and decontaminate them.

They don’t have ecoli, just “total coliforms” which includes simple surface bacteria which is harmless. Their ecoli and “fecal coliform” levels are zero even before they had the UV filter. This water is actually really good considering the source.

Love the deck's design, does it have strong wind there? You might want to secure the deck by tying it to a tree or something if you don't want to drill/make foundation on the rocks

I think the ecological price of things should be thought more thoroughly thought about. Building with wood should be done with materials sourced locally. The distances materials travel have a big impact on the overall project. I'm not saying that we should reject everything not sourced there, but even the solar panels have a price as to where they were manufactured and the elements used to create them. The alternative to source energy is worse. I just feel like you all need to get more to basics and building from what you already have. I am a fan though and watching since early days of Precious Plastics.

You should make little metal cards and print qr-codes for people to scan on these plattforms. Maybe there could be a little commenting webseite, like old fashioned hotels had a guestbook (I know this was super famous back in the old internet days). And every plattform could have it's own commenting/guestbook which would only be accessable via the specific qr-code on the plattform. You could gather these comments and make them publicly available. But only for people scanning the qr-code it would be possible to add to the comments. People could have workshops on these platforms and could gather their new ideas via a comment on the website or a nice editor of some kind. Or just leave a hello while their visiting maybe. Sounds fun in my head, to also add some digital software stuff into the mix and integrate it with the publicity.

A larger scale/recirculating sand-filter, between the well and your domestic water system can improve the water quality to where the UV can finish safely. My own experience is with treating rural wastewater to protect local groundwater, but similar principles can be applied to producing potable water.

In my off grid water system (rain water), I use a 3 step filtration 1. 0.2 micron ceramic filter for nasties 2. Carbon block 1.0 micron for heavy metals and 3. Coconut shell carbon filter to remove odour and improve taste. I think if you put in a 0.2 micron filter you should get rid of all your bacteria etc and stay healthy❤️✨

Another cool option for filtering water would be a multistage active coal filtering system. Sawyer e.g. produces quite nice and cheap options mainly used for long distance backpacking. Those things filter up to 300.000 gallons of water I think? And you can backflush those things. Flowing rate ain't high, but you can let those run 24/7 from a tank. The pressure from gravity is plenty to push through the water. Maybe filter it into a bigger tank which contains an UV light to "keep" the water clean.

Hi there. Please accept my advice to help you with your water supply issues ; I noticed on previous videos that when you had your Well cleaned out, the main concrete lid was NOT replaced properly afterwards & this is seriously dangerous for drinking water! Originally your Well lid was properly sealed, so there were no gaps around the edges & that's why it was very clean already, with just silt from the spring at the bottom. As it is now; Rodents, insects, worms & surface contaminants will fall inside, leaving rotting creatures in your water supply! This may have already happened & that's probably why your water quality tests are coming back worse :-/ It's VITALLY important to fix this issue now. Please please for your safety inspect your well again! Ensure the lid is on properly then dig a trench around the outside edge to keep surface water away from your Well water. Most importantly; thoroughly pack the edges with concrete to make sure there are NO gaps or holes that would allow anything to get in. Then using the central manhole for access, pump out all the water & check the bottom inside again with a bright light to ensure it is clean & nothing has fallen in! Then you can add chlorine into the Well water to sterilise it & flush it out through your pump / pipes to thoroughly clean it all (this is known as 'shocking' the Well). Flush this with new fresh well water after several refils. It may take some time to rinse it all out, but any trace amount of chlorine will dilute away & be safe to drink then. Them you should find you will get better & more consistent test results from a secure & safe water source & save money on more unnecessary filters & tests in the future 👍 Thank you for taking your time posting these excellent videos on KZbin for us all to see. Your community is a pleasure to see people live & work together achieving so much & always smiling happy 😁 I really love your channel & look forward to following your progress; the ruin looks amazing already 👍

the Prefiltration is not very good. keep in mind that this filtercardridges wash out. i would install before the filter cardridge a big sand filter, or with less power required, a big wool filter. This will prefiltrate your water down to 10 mic and then you can go with your 1 mic or .2 mic cardridge. I would use 3-4 cardridges. 20 mic 5 mic 1 mic and then the uv. Cheers

Mount the UV assembly verically - avoids a pocket of air. Add a series LCD "cheapo" current meter - do a daily check.

Hi guys I’ve been following your channel since the beginning… Didn’t know your project was going to be this big! I do have one recommendation about the fire issue-if you’ll allow me.. Why don’t you guys build yourself a moat! I’m being serious. It’s one of the ways that ancient tribal people would protect their land from fires they would build a deep moat and fill it with water or other things that were fire repellent. Maybe you could also build a large retaining side wall on the outer side. As in, large tall wall over that wall goes down deep into the moat and the other side will come up right about land level near your camp. You could fill it with free creek water or gray or black water (you might have to close that one, lol) and then the large wall will protect anything that might be blowing from the winds of the fire from blowing over the wall into your camp starting a fire there. The moat is obvious the moat can be on both sides of the wall and keep fire from getting in or out just in case you were to start a fire on your property. I’ve never built one obviously every day I’m sure you guys are out there doing brand new things you’ve never done… But I’m guessing since this is how they do flood water protection in Florida by putting a big inflated ring around their house to keep the water out… You could do it in reverse with a large aesthetically beautiful wall and two Moats, one on either side. You guys could even make it a rock climbing wall or one side of the moat can be used to wash clothes or to swim in you guys are very smart you can think of something aesthetically pleasing and environmentally and economically creative. Can’t wait to see what you guys come up with! 👏
