I mounted mine on the frame by the gas tank with an extra fuel filter up by the carb. I find it best to mount the pump facing upwards for best fuel flow. This way gas will drain back down into the tank and not sit in the pump. If gas sits in the pump it rots out the diaphram on the fuel pump causing premature failure. I have gone through several electric fuel pumps though. I have found that Holly Pumps work best. Spectre pumps are junk but none of them last though. I wired my electric pump to a relay going to the “RUN” position on the ignition switch and I have a toggle switch/ kill switch wired and mounted to the dash above the key. This way I can kill power to the pump in an emergency. This set up has worked good over the years. 1980 CJ5 2BBL I6, 4.0.

This might sound like a very dumb question. But I’m not mechanical I’m trying to learn. So my 1979 cj7 Jeep when I flipped the switch to turn on the fuel pump it used to click and now it does not and it’s not firing the engine with not turn over but sound like it is trying to I found the hose to the gas tank(I don’t have the original gas tank this gas tank is in the bed when I bought it) the Holley fuel pump is mounted on the rear frame near the bumper I’m wondering if you think that is a fuel pump problem that needs to be replaced or another problem? Thank you

@@1234jakob, the fuel pump should fire up make noise immediately after switching it on. Check all fuses, relays and power supply to the pump before replacing the pump first. I had a similar problem and come to find out the power wire going to the Fuel pump relay had come loose.

In Calif this is a big issue with the E10 fuel evaporating out of the carb in a few days making it hard to start, adding a "primer pump" works

Does the electric fuel pump push the fuel through the mechanical fuel pump to the carburetor so the carburetor is ready to start? I didn’t know if you could push fuel through a mechanical pump. Great video I appreciate.

@@johngodwin7902 I don't think so but it seems to help get fuel a bit faster. Didn't work as great as I hoped but if the mechanical one fails I carry a rubber hose in the tool box so I can bypass it and still go.

When converting to an electric pump from a manual Pump … do u remove the rod?

In-line fuse? Power supply?

Did this work where you put it? Holley told me it couldn't be further than 12" from the gas tank, but their literature said 12" Vertical, hence I called. I'd like to keep my steel lines in tact (I have a YJ), so thought about where you put it. How has it held up?

It will work without the mechanical pump holding back pressure, I thought it would help with the fuel prime after sitting but I have found that there needs to be a direct path to the carb.

Hey there man! Do you have a part # for that fuel pump? I recently started a 74 CJ5 project as well and have been considering this conversion from the start

all this work why not install a mechanical fuel pump? so much easier

It has one that works fine i just wanted to have the electric pump so i wouldn't have to crank the engine so long after it sets for a long time.
