Hello fellow 4AGE blacktop owner. Just wanted to say i get how awesome it feels driving a corolla with the blacktop. It's Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde. AE101, 6-speed, Superstrut, 4AGE blacktop

I have a AE102 thats bone stock with 200,000 miles (still running great though) and auto transmission :(. I cant complain though, It was my aunt's car for the last 13 years and I really want to keep it for another 10 years at least! In the next few years I would like to drop in a 4AGE and 6 speed transmission swap, this video keeps my love alive!

That sounds awesome I just bought a 94 Corolla DX ae10 2 I had the car for 2 years now and it has 140 to my house I bought it at 125 and it is my first car and I've never thought I would like a Toyota now I'm trying to find parts for it do you know what website do you go to I'm in the States I live in Manhattan New York
@Roller_ae8611 жыл бұрын
i dont think its ever idled that low but yeah when the idle is at its lowest it does have a rough idle. also i put my coolant temp. sensor in the block off plate i made for the front of the head. i think its reading too much of the cooler water coming in. i also made a swirl tank like the greddy one and the return on it is after the thermostat instead of it being before, i think the water is flowing too fast and it wont heat up the water. im pretty sure all of that is a problem.

Engine is a 4A-GE 20v Blacktop, transplanted from a JDM AE101 Corolla BZ Touring wagon. Different engine than stock.
@alansmilealot5 жыл бұрын
What came stock in your country, we had a choice of the 4afe and 7afe in the us. Never got a 4age option which is sad. I think Corolla after 91 lost that option
@Cretkensigh11 жыл бұрын
. what sort of other cars have you driven? it could be your just not use to the high end power of the 20v, granted they are only a 1.6 but they do only really come alive around the 4-5k rpm. This guy has either had a lot of refreshing done to the engine or he's kept it well looked after. that sound is to die for ^^ hope you get yours sorted at some point. I'm sitting about 181k and plan to do a full rebuild at 200k, she still pulls nicely and sounds good but I want more of each lol

hey mate, nice car!.. how much hp are you getting out of that blacktop?.. have you timed 0-100km?

LoL damn.....I have almost no idea what you said there. I only ask because My VVT pulley went bad and that what I had happened. was really slow under 3500-4000rpm like it couldn't breath right or a bad fuel/air mix. sounds like you know a lot more then I do about the old 4age
@Roller_ae8611 жыл бұрын
i have a toyota 180 thermostat so i know thats not it. crusing it only gets to 160 but remember im reading this in the block off plate. at idle on a warm day it will go to 200 to 210. but if i rev it up the temp will drop to 160. thats why i think its flowing too fast due to the swirl tank return being in the wrong spot. but when it reads 190 or better the car runs pretty strong. i need to stop being lazy and fix these things. o yeah and i burn oil im pretty sure its the rings.
@Roller_ae8611 жыл бұрын
hey i have a bt in an ae86 and i was wondering does it ever feel really slow below 4 grand? my blacktop, its like it only comes all alive at like 4500 and pulls hard. somethings up with my car i think its too rich. it back fires out the exhaust a lot.

How hard would it be to swap this into a 1993 Geo Prizm? Currently it just has a 1.6L 3 speed auto, I'd like to keep it auto but maybe a 4 or 5 speed.

How difficult was it to swap the wiring harness over from 4afe to 4age? cheers.
@Cordia4G63T8 жыл бұрын
It was easy in my case as I used the engine harness from a JDM Corolla BZ Touring wagon, and since my sedan was already a JDM model the connectors were exactly the same). The only wires on the harness that were different were for the A/C, but that was easy to swap over. Takes more work on a US/non-JDM model though of course, but still not overly difficult if you're good with wires and reading diagrams.

@Cordia4G63T11 жыл бұрын
Corollas have been FF since the AE82 in the 80's. The AE100/AE101 series however began in Japan from 1991 to late 1995, whereas in the US they were manufactured from 1993-1997.

It`s been two years now and thought I`d WIDELY expand on the issue. Sure enough, the sound and response combo can`t be topped for us N/A guys. That said, newer turbo`s are getting better at the response but with turbo comes cost, reliability and wear disadvantages on 1.6 mecha tune engines and the factory drivetrains built for those.. And thats IF you live in a country that allows such a visible modification on the vehicle without paying FORTUNES to get it approved, which defeats the point of having a Corolla as a cheap street "racer". For those who dont have that problem, those in most states of U.S.A for example, sure, pursue your dreams and put the turbo on, but at that point you will find you need the stronger Celica transmission and corresponding adapter++, all of which again is gonna cost a fortune if you`re just slapping a turbo on there. You could go 2.0 3S-GTE but then why not just go Celica right off the bat.. If not, then of course comes the time when you want even more power out of that turbo 1.6, I`m not even going too much into that but suffice to say that a combination of 1.8 7afe block, forged pistons and rods, with a 4A-GE head on top is expensive as hell, thats before we add custom intake, aftermarket management and wiring harness... Just to explain, for most, unless with free availability for a mill to create the adapter and other R&D (every build is different so theres always a wheel to re-invent) that`s a 10000+ USD enterprise before you even take it for a no-bonnet test drive around the neighborhood. So all that re-invention, and you`re still stuck with a Corolla when you at that point could have had a AWD or FWD Celica with a safely boosted 300-350hp 3SGTE for a fraction of the price. RWD Celica-Supra MK.II or MK.III Supra with 1JZ/2JZ and ridicilous amounts of boost is a good one also. Either way, good for you, I`m happy for you (seriously), turbo`s are a LOT of fun, the acceleration perks (when you learn to tackle wheel spin on the way out of the corner) can`t be beat. It`s just that, engine noise aside, I prefer the quicker, cheaper turn-around time of a slightly modified stock ITB equipped N/A motor (headers, intake modifications, exhaust to enhance response and torque delivery) from building it inside the Garage to driving on the Street, and gives more fun and lets me focus on driving the thing :)

Not one bit of that sounded like 8500rpm. Your vvt-I sensor or tps sounds like it is out of time. There should be at least 4 progressions of timing, not one solid rise. Itbs sound in tune, so there's a plus. But Ya, that sounded kinda weak :/
@Cordia4G63T10 жыл бұрын
Learn to read, it's 8,250rpm, not 8,500rpm. The 4A-GE 20v doesn't have VVT-i, it's VVT. Timing advances as soon as VVT kicks in, which is dynamic and goes based on throttle position, not RPM.
@brandonphipps824410 жыл бұрын
Fundementally rpm is directly related to throttle position. That's why I said check your tps. If you slow rev it to 9k you will see the timing belt react in stages. But if you are 100%/0% on your clocking the staging will flatten out. I'm not attacking you I'm just saying that I used to bang rev limit daily with the exact same motor and it sounded a lot different.
@Cordia4G63T10 жыл бұрын
Brandon Phipps Yes, that's true to a point, the two are related but not as directly as the previous Silvertop engine (which I also own in an AE101 FX-GT). The car has a brand new VVT pulley and the I've confirmed that the TPS is operating correctly by using OBD-I software and driving around with the laptop, watching the throttle position as the revs increase. I wasn't attacking you either, though after a while the comments on here (not on this particular video however) wear my patience thin as a lot of people seem to have an opinion on "how much faster theirs is" etc when it's extremely difficult to gauge a true sense of speed or sound from a simple KZbin video, which wasn't intended to prove anything to anyone. Feel free to check out my other video where the mic is mounted in the engine bay instead.
@deanbassist0110 жыл бұрын
Brandon Phipps I dont think you understand a 4AGE 20v. So this being a blacktop, a few different RPM limits are possible depending on ECU, highest being 8250rpm. Both 20v Silvertop and Blacktop use a simple 2 stage (ON/OFF) VVT system, it has an economy cam profile and an advanced timing profile, it can be operated with a simple switch, and the ECU engages or disengages it based on load. There are not 4 progressions, this is not VVT-i, there is 1 progression, and the engagement is often soft and not harsh like VTEC or a a multi step valve timing/lift control like MIVEC, the idea for this is stability in high speed cornering.
@brandonphipps824410 жыл бұрын
Look at the title bud. That in no way was "screaming". Thanks for the lecture tho, because you sir, obviously don't understand that variable timing works in a way that creates a maximum efficiency based on rpm. Basic rpm works in that it goes up and up at a constant basis. Vvt vvti (VARIABLE valve timing) inputs electronic VARIABLES that change rev patterns throughout the single cycle. Try it. You may learn something. There are 6or so ecus for this motor. I had the second highest lifting console. I hit 9k in less than a second on a daily. So if you don't understand that progressive cycling changes the rev pitch systematically as the revs increase, then you don't understand vvt or 20v. And clearly you don't understand that the entire point of that motor was to implement that fundemental basis in response to hondas version that didn't even work until you were so pinned you needed to hit the next gear. Thanks for your thoughts tho. Do some research.
