The city of Antigua Guatemala is the capital of the department of Sacatepéquez , Guatemala . Located approximately 25 kilometers west of Guatemala City , it is a colonial city surrounded by volcanoes that has been preserved for centuries. During the viceregal era it was known as Santiago de los Caballeros de Guatemala .
