I knew both Robert Forster and Larry Cohen. Robert was the nicest, most down to earth person you’d ever want to meet. He loved movies and was just a class act. Larry was a one of a kind guy as well. Old school Hollywood at its best. Miss them both. Re: Soldier. I had the same reaction as you. Wasn’t a giant fan when it first came out, but over the years it’s grown on me more and more and I just bought the blu ray. Who doesn’t love any action movie that stars Kurt Russell!

That is so cool! I've become a big Robert Forster fan over the years... ever since Jackie Brown (I didn't know who he was prior to first seeing that film in the 90s, but he definitely caught my attention after that lol). He seemed like he would be a pretty cool guy. I need to explore more of Larry Cohen's work. That's been a blind spot in my film appreciation. And agreed, Kurt rules! -- especially in action/sci-fi movies. He was a total badass in Soldier. Thanks for sharing this experience and for watching!

@@TheOriginalFuzz Robert Forster is excellent in the cult classic Alligator (1980) and Disney’s The Black Hole (1979)… a film I loved since I first saw it in theaters - the effects, robots and score along with a great cast make this a must for sci-fi fans. Jackie Brown was Robert’s comeback film.

Oh yeah I totally agree with that! Falling Down would be a Day One purchase for me on 4K. I sure hope that turns out to be the case. While Warner Bros doesn't release nearly as much stuff in their catalog as I think they should, at least they're actually putting out quite a few 4K releases. And I could see Falling Down being the type of film they might release on 4K. It's not a totally fringe movie or anything, and Michael Douglas and Joel Schumacher are pretty big names. Great to see you, and thanks for watching and chiming in!

Yeah I'm not real familiar with most of Mark Dacascos' work. I'll have to check out Only the Strong... definitely interested in finding more films he's done. The martial arts action in Drive is a lot of fun. I do hope I didn't steer you wrong on anything... admittedly, the Total Recall remake is probably one of my more controversial choices lol. Not everyone will agree with me on that one. But as a stand-alone film, I think it's still pretty fun and entertaining. And there are a few nods to the original film in the remake as well. But they do take a different approach to the story than Paul Verhoven did. Thanks for watching as always, my friend!

God Told me To is a GREAT movie! I’m not sure where I first heard of it, but also advocate for that one. Blue Underground does some great 4k transfers as well. They know how to get it done. Prince of Darkness I think I first heard of from you. And I agree…very undersold / unsung hero of the Carpenter filmography. Thanks so much Ken! Great to see you! Very cool that you ordered The Island. Yeah you definitely can't go wrong with any of those titles you mentioned. I think you'll really enjoy The Sentinel, Falling Down and The Island in particular... and remember with The Island, I would advise not reading the synopsis on back of the movie case before you watch it. Go into it totally blind, because that film is truly most effective when you don't know what's going on or what's going to happen or where the film is headed. I noticed you said Prince of darkness was on a 100GB triple layer disc. Blue Underground i noticed also does there movies on 100GB discs. Does that help the quality of the transfer versus other studios that use 50GB discs? I know depends on the movie but for example I mean a longer action packed movie that should be possibly on a 100GB disc but will fit and max out on a 50GB disc so they cheap out and go that route to save money. Or do you think that it doesn’t matter as long as it fits on a 50GB disc with no compression the transfer would be the same and it just comes down to bitrate and playback? Maybe I’m getting too technical but have been thinking about it ever since I noticed all of Blue Undergrounds on 100GB discs and they are typically know for amazing 4K transfers
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz Ай бұрын
Great question! Well 4K discs use either dual-layer 66GB or triple-layer 100GB discs. The 50GB and 25GB discs are for standard 1080p blu-rays. But to answer your question, yes it does help with the quality of the image. Essentially, if you have more storage space on the disc, then the file size for the movie can be larger -- which means less compression is needed and the quality of the encode can be a little higher. And I think you also get a bit more consistency and stability with the bitrate output. With these Carpenter films, you can see the difference. It's not huge, but it's noticeable. In addition to the Scream Factory releases, I also have a Carpenter 4-movie pack on 4K... the Studiocanal encodes, which are on BD66 discs. But after seeing a video from James at In Search of Physical Media comparing the two different 4K releases of The Fog (with screenshot comparisons), I knew I had to invest in stand-alone Scream Factory releases for each of those 4 films. They're all on 100GB discs, and they do look a bit more vibrant than the Studiocanal discs I have. I think the SF discs are sourced from the same 4K transfers as Studiocanal, but the higher-quality encodes SF uses result in a little nicer-looking image overall. Plus I think you get better audio on the Scream Factory discs... Dolby Atmos mixes, which I don't believe are included in the Studiocanal releases. Don't get me wrong -- BD66 discs still look great too (for that matter, I still think blu-rays look great as a format overall). It's just that, if I have a choice between the two, I'll choose the version with the higher-quality encode wherever possible. And I didn't mind double dipping on 4K for the John Carpenter films, as I'm a big Carpenter fan and wanted his stuff in the highest quality possible. To give you an idea of the difference between the two, check out James' 4K comparison video of The Fog here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qITMapV8icSKlcU I hope this helps! Thanks for watching and commenting.

Might not help the picture quality on some of the movies you mentioned but very good to know. Thanks for the detailed response!
