You've made me want to get hold of those Sonny Chiba movies! When I was a kid, I used to walk into downtown Jacksonville (FLA) with my youngest uncle, who was only two years older than me, to this old time theater that always showed martial arts movies. They would always let us in, even though most of the movies were rated R and we were clearly underage, and it was always a double feature for just a couple bucks. Two little white kids sitting in a theater of mostly black adult men, half of them smoking. Those were the days, lol. Anyway, Sonny Chiba was one of our favorites, I remember us talking about him and his movies all the time. That uncle passed away just a few months ago, eaten up with cancer, so I think I'll try to get hold of these to watch and remember better times.

I've got my eye on two other Sonny Chiba blu-ray collections from Shout... Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. So I may be picking up those next to add to my small but growing martial arts collection. Great video. Had fun with this. Never knew what movie was coming next. Felt like a clean out the fridge night lol. I am a fan of Robert Rodriguez. Love his Desperado trilogy starting with El Mariachi. Also enjoyed From Dusk Till Dawn. Have you seen Mark Wahlberg's movie Fear with Reese Witherspoon? I picked up the Protege in a Wal-mart bargain bin for $8 on 4k. Didn't go into it expecting much, but very much enjoyed it. This comment feels as random as your video lol. Looking forward to the Oscar's tomorrow night. Lets go Oppenheimer. Hoping it sets a new record for most Oscar's. Thanks for helping me pass the time. Till next time. 🍻

LMAO! "Clean out the fridge night" Ha ha... I like that! I might have to do another rando video at some point, sort of a sequel to this one lol. I've never seen Rodriguez' El Mariachi trilogy, but I've heard good things about it. I'll have to check it out. And yes, I have seen the movie Fear... many years ago. It was pretty good if i remember right. And I believe that was the first big role Marky Mark got when he was first getting into acting. I too am rooting for Oppenheimer at the Oscars. I'm not as big a fan of the ceremony these days as I was when I was younger. Feels like a lot has changed in the last 20-30 years. But my mom was a huge fan of the Oscars and it was always a big deal in our house when I was growing up. Glad to see Nolan on the map this year. Thanks for weighing in Dwayne!

@@TheOriginalFuzz I 100% agree with you on the Oscar's. I managed to watch 4 of the nominated movies for best picture and i still hold on to Oppenheimer winning. However, the Holdovers and American Fiction where very good. Not sure if Fear was Mark Wahlberg's first movie, but it was very good. It was considered a sleeper the year in came out. 1993 I think. Apparently it was the one and only time he played the villain. I still remember the scene when he yells. "Let me in your house". Good times.

I had never seen Red Rock West and yes, great “Neo Noir” type film. I’ll have to check out “The Deep” “Rounders” “Real Genius” and “Smokin Aces.” All seem like they’d be interesting watches for me. Glad that “hack” is working for ya 😉👍🏼 Thanks for the great list of physical media recommendations as always my brother!

I can't believe you've never seen Real Genius! Dude, that's a classic... probably one of the better Val Kilmer roles. And William Atherton is awesome in it too. Funny movie. And yes, definitely check out those others you mentioned as well (Rounders in particular is a lot of fun). I did run into a problem getting the Panasonic hack to work for Avenging Force. So I'm wondering if it has something to do with the way 88 Films codes their discs. No matter what I tried, I wasn't able to "confuse" the machine on that title. But with the other titles I tried, the hack worked like a charm. Thanks for watching and weighing in as always my friend!

I always liked movies, but my passion for them has gone to whole new levels in the last few years since I got back into collecting. I used to be a lot more casual about movies and didn't necessarily explore much outside of the mainstream stuff. But in the last few years, my discovery of older films I've never seen has expanded dramatically. Anyway, I'm glad you're here brother and catching up! Hey Fuzz. Love your channel and ive been following you ( not literally through the streets...that would be disturbing 😂 ) for about a year now. You inspired me to buy a 4k Sony blu ray player which you covered, and gave great advice on disc freezing remedies! Having a TCL 55 Mini led tv with excellent AI upscaling, i took your advice and let the tv upscale as apposed to my Sony 4k blu ray player doing it...i turned that off. Great advice sir 👍 Would you consider doing a top 10 blu ray transfer as i still buy them alongside 4k discs. Im sure theres some 1080 blu rays out there that rival some 4k transfers obviously without the hdr. I often see reviews saying certain 4k discs are not much better than their excellent blu ray transfers. Be interesting as im sure most 4k enthusiasts still buy the odd standard blu ray films like you n I. All the best fella Daz

Thanks Daz! That's a good idea for a video... the best blu-ray transfers. I'll have to put some thought into that -- might take me a little time. But I like the idea. "Conan the Barbarian" is an absolute favourite of mine and it's great to finally be able to own/watch the superior theatrical cut, previously unavailable since the VHS days...and now on 4K with enhanced audio as well no less ! Rounders is a great movie, I want that one myself ! Like you I discovered Sonny Chiba through "True Romance", I have the UK version of that Arrow Streetfighter set...it's a lot of fun (especially with the English dub LOL !)...it's so OTT though that I consider it more of a "fun time" than a favourite martial arts movie. My fav martial arts movies would include Bruce Lee's "Enter the Dragon", Jet Li's "Fearless" and Donnie Yen's "Iron Monkey" as well as Jet Li's "Fist of Legend" which is getting a re-release/remaster? from "88 films" in a few weeks time).
@TheOriginalFuzz
@TheOriginalFuzz 9 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching and commenting here! So, I'm very curious... why is the theatrical cut of Conan superior? I watched the extended cut when I viewed my copy. What makes the theatrical cut the way to go? I just assumed we'd get more scenes with the extended cut. I totally agree about Street Fighter... the English dubs are hilarious! LMAO! It's definitely more on the "light-hearted fun" side of the spectrum. I'm thinking about picking up those Shout Factory Sonny Chiba blu-ray collections next (Vol. 1 and 2). I definitely want to get more Chiba in my collection, but it's hard to know where to start, since he had so many movies. BTW, thanks for the tip on Iron Monkey, Fist of Legend and Fearless. I will def put those on my list to check out. I've been getting into Donnie Yen a bit more lately (particularly the IP Man series), but I've not checked out a whole lot of Jet Li yet (aside from his appearance in one of the Lethal Weapon movies... can't even remember which one now. LW3?).
@tigerblue42
@tigerblue42 9 ай бұрын
@@TheOriginalFuzz There are two differences between the extended cut and the theatrical cut. The first is the extended cut has an extra scene (or extension to an existing scene?) where Conan is talking to Subotai, it's unnecessary and as I recall the dialogue is a bit cringey, it just doesn't need to be there so if you're used to the theatrical (as I was when I was a kid and owned it on VHS) it's jarring when it appears on the DVD/Blu-ray and I always skipped it. The second and most important difference is the ending. If you've only seen the movie once it might not have sunk in yet that what really makes Conan the masterpiece it is...the fabulous score by the late great Basil Poledouris. Every second of music is perfectly scored to every scene. At the end of the theatrical cut, when Conan has slain Thulsa Doom and is sitting there, brooding on the steps of the palace the music is perfect...it's very "sad and thoughtful"...then as Conan stands and begins to swing the burning chalice the music perfectly changes to bring in an "exultant triumph" that leads into the crescendo and climatic ending. All of that has been ruined in the extended cut that we've had on DVD and Blu-ray for the past 20 years...the director chose to butcher the ending by adding in little cut scenes of the princess as Conan approaches Thulsa Doom and after he's slain him which kinda pushes the score out so that when we see Conan brooding on the steps the music is no longer the perfect fit that it was...and the mood of the scene is completely different. For someone like me that saw the movie as a teenager and LOVED it and the score to bits on VHS it was "blasphemy" LOL. Now, finally, we have the original theatrical cut and on 4K...it's literally made my year. I cannot tell you how happy it made me to finally get my hands on this theatrical cut and in such great quality with the Arrow treatment 🥰🤩🥰🤩😍🤩 In regards to Sonny Chiba, I have that Streetfighter set (UK version) and also the Sister Streetfighter set...the latter is not as good imo but it's still good fun and you can get hold of it very cheap normally and Sonny makes an appearance in one (or two?) of the movies in that set...one of those movies was also in the list of movies that Christian Slater's character went to see in True Romance (I believe it was a tripple feature he watched ?). Jet Li was in "Lethal Weapon 4" that was actually the first movie I ever saw him in but my favourite Jet Li movie is definitely his "Fearless" followed by "Fist of Legend". I think Donnie Yen's Ip Man films are mostly pretty good (I don't think I liked the 4th one) but I prefer "Iron Monkey" to all of them myself.
@TheOriginalFuzz

@@tigerblue42 Thank you for that detailed explanation re: Conan. I think I understand better now, and what you're saying makes total sense. It sounds like I'll be watching the theatrical cut next time I watch it.😉 Also, I'll have to check out the Sister Streetfighter series too... and I believe you're correct: one of the "sister" movies was included in the True Romance Chiba triple feature that Clarence was going to see on his BD. If you're curious, these are the two Sonny Chiba sets I will probably be buying next, from Shout Factory (or Shout Studios now): Sonny Chiba Collection Volume 1 -- www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0BBLD8CTX Sonny Chiba Collection Volume 2 -- www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0CH3ZF3DJ

Well I saw it in theater when it first came out, so that may have something to do with it for me. It's admittedly probably a mid-tier film... but i still think it's entertaining enough. I can only speak for myself as a content creator here on KZbin and sometimes I like to provide some context to “tee up” what I’m about to explain. Not all want that but then others do. As creators here we’ll likely never make all that view our vids completely happy… If another creator does something I’m not interested in…I usually just fast forward right by. But my recommendation for you is simply to realize that not everyone will create “specific content” for you, delivered in your style, for exactly how you want it. While that may make you happy - what if many others out there don’t like that? Then the creator “may change their style for a smaller populous thus hurting their visibility for the greater good. Making a smaller populous happy over what their larger potential may want - isn’t always the wisest decision. Just some perspective is all I hope to share here. I’m just happy to see “physical media collectors” here on a KZbin creating content vs overly critiquing them. I’m all for feedback - even on myself, but I want to make sure it is in an area I need to actually improve in for the “collector” in mind… Just sharing…be well

ALL of my videos have timestamps/chapters that allow people to skip the intros. But I'm not going to change how I do my intros, etc... meaning, I'm not going to stop being myself or staying true to who I am.
