Thanks for uploading. I did the full length of the line in May 2016. I was staying in Tai Koo so got the MTR back from Kennedy Town.

This is one of the older tram cars. They use geared DC motors. For some reason, they sound like a car with a noisy muffler when accelerating (although it’s electric). The newer tram cars don’t make this sound.

Hong Kong has the highest public transport use in the world. Over 90% of trips are made on public transport. You can tell from the relatively light traffic in spite of the extreme population density.

Well that's the HIGHEST 'CAB VIEW' I have ever had. Damn good video though, - a good example of how to mix modern traffic with trams in a relatively narrow road - (councils take note). I know traffic has got 'heavier' as the years have gone by, - just look at the size of those double-deck buses, - but it all works.
@Lowezar
@Lowezar 5 жыл бұрын
I feel like the stops are a bit too frequent though. A very frustrating ride.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 5 жыл бұрын
@@@Lowezar . .. Yes I quite agree , although there are an awful lot of those 3-axle d/d's that seem to stop just as frequently. I suppose if you have to move that number of people fast and efficiently it is the only way to do it. Granted part of the day they are not crammed to capacity, but there is still a lot of people about at all times of the day even after the 'rush hours'.
@Lowezar
@Lowezar 5 жыл бұрын
@@christopherlovelock9104 I think fast and efficiently would actually be to spread the stops a little further apart. But then again frequent lengthy traffic lights... Not much point not making a stop where you're waiting for the green anyway I guess. Anyway, as you pointed out the buses seem to double this route pretty much. I'd raise the trams to monorails (preferably suspended kind as they won't block as much light on already narrow street) and spread those stops much further apart. So they'd move a lot of people fast, ignoring traffic underneath. And then leave the buses as is to help people who can't/don't want to walk in between monorail stops. The only problem with all of this of course would be absolute nightmare of blocking parts of the busy street during construction. :D Doesn't look feasible.
@christopherlovelock9104
@christopherlovelock9104 5 жыл бұрын
@@@Lowezar .. Yes I agree again, especially about the monorails - a feasible idea (perhaps). Although where are you going to put the supports in streets like that which probably are 'riddled' with under ground services :- i.e. Drains, Electricity, Gas, Water, etc. then you still have to get the people up to them. Stairs would probably 'block' quickly if they weren't wide enough, and 'lifts' are rather out of the question - not enough capacity. From a quick think all I can come up with is either larger capacity trams, completely "under-ground" high capacity trains, (like Londons' "Underground" or the Paris "Metro"), or failing all that, something rather like New Yorks' "elevated" system. The only problem with anything 'up in the air' from what I can see are the several new roads it passes under and the other previous things I have mentioned. Really it's a "catch 22" situation and the only slight advantage I can see would be higher capacity modern d/deck trams similar in size to the buses (or even bigger) - personally, I think I will let the 'locals' sort it out.......
@Lowezar
@Lowezar 5 жыл бұрын

Also the trams need to be upgraded as well. How long are they going to be using these aged trams?
@sepruecom
@sepruecom 5 жыл бұрын
forever, probably? They are seen as a city symbol, not a modern mean of transport. As far as I know, it is not planned to replace them by (much) more modern type rolling stock... Also, the "noisy" comes from the rigid 4-wheel chassis of the tram. On almost all other tram systems they use 8-wheel, two-bogie chassis, which can follow the track better and thus are much less noisy than these. That type is/was also available as double-deckers - the double deck trams in Alexandria/EG and Blackpool/GB are of that type (as were most of the closed tram systems in Great Britain), however that technology never found its way to Hong Kong...
@atomstarfireproductions8695
@atomstarfireproductions8695 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, these are older tram cars that use DC geared motors. They sound like a noisy muffler for some reason when accelerating. The newer trams use AC motors and don’t make this sound. There are even newer tram cars that have air conditioning. However, they still use the same base design with 4 wheel single bogie with 2 motors.
