The Rumoi Main Line (留萌本線, Rumoi-honsen) is a Japanese railway line in Hokkaido operated by Hokkaido Railway Company (JR Hokkaido) which connects Fukagawa Station in Fukagawa and Rumoi Station in Rumoi. Until the 116 km (72 mi) section of the 146 km (91 mi) Hidaka Main Line from Mukawa to Samani was closed on 1 April 2021, following storm damage in January 2015, it was the shortest railway line in Japan, to be classified as a 'main line'.
On 10 August 2015, JR Hokkaido informed the mayors of Rumoi and Mashike of its plans to close the 16.7 km (10.4 mi) section of the line from Rumoi and Mashike in 2016. In April 2016, it was officially announced that the section from Rumoi to Mashike would close, and the last service operated on 4 December. The remaining section is also at very serious risk of closure, due to extremely poor passenger numbers. The 4 towns and cities along the line. Rumoi, Numata, Chippubetsu and Fukagawa were in discussion with JR Hokkaido regarding the line's future, but Rumoi left the group as the city was already well-equipped so they didn't see keeping the railway open as necessary. For this reason, the section of the line running from Ishikari Numata - Rumoi will likely be closed in the distant future. The 3 remaining municipalities are still in discussion with JR Hokkaido and it has been clarified that they are working to keep the Fukagawa-Ishikari-Numata section open for the benefit of students who use the railway to travel to and from their schools. in September 2022, JR Hokkaido submitted a proposal to the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism to close an additional 35.7 km (22.2 mi) between Ishikari-Numata and Rumoi. If approved, the last day of operations in that section will be on 31 March 2022. The remaining 13.3 km (8.3 mi) section to Fukugawa is slated to be closed in March 2026.

初めましてこんにちは。2022年11月の終わりに乗ってきた者です。その時の思い出と重ね合わせて拝見させて頂いてます。その時は前日に雪だったとかで沿線は雪景色でした。そして窓の曇りも酷く(多客だったのもあり)、良く見えない景色も有りました。貴殿のお陰でキレイに観れて良かったです。無くなる前にまた行きたいなぁと考えてます。配信ありがとうございます。

かつては羽幌線などと重要な貨物路線だった留萌本線。 21世紀になってからも、SLの運転をするなど観光需要も取り込もうとしたがその低迷により何の存在価値もなくなり、ついには日に数百人しか使わないという有様。 今年3月で石狩沼田ー留萌は終わり。3年後に深川ー石狩沼田も終わり。今までありがとうございました。

俺の連れでこの先の留萌~増毛が廃線になってJR北海道完乗になった人いる。 コロナによる家庭の事情で会社と買い物しか行けない状況が続いてて、多分乗れないだろうな。 One of my friend completed ride in Hokkaido Japan Railway's all line because abandoned between Rumoi to Mashike. Maybe I can't ride this line for the situation continues I can go workspace and shopping because family matters for COVID19.

Interesting trip but i feel sad about this line will be closed. Here in Russia many railway lines was closed because they didnt bring any profit to our transport companies.

These type of rural, uncrowded but lightly used lines should be kept and promoted as tourist roads and pushed as parts of packages, etc. The area is in a very popular and uncrowded place and just the usei n winter should be enough to keep it going. I know Japan heavily subsidizes internal rail and always had, but it appears they are starting to back off that policy and are cutting lines like this one. They should reconsider that policy. Rail travel is becoming more and more popular around the world.
