I wonder why Hisatsu Orange Railway didn't buy 20,000 V AC electric train sets. After all, the entire line from Sendai to Yatsushiro has overhead electrical power, since it was formerly part of the Kagoshima Main Line.

Because of cost reduction. Diesel car is much cheaper than electric train. BUT Freight train go direct from Kagoshima line. That's why keep electrical facility (PS, I want apologize my plain English skill)

@@源鴉鳥 Or maybe at the time the railway company started in 2004, Hisatsu Orange Railway didn't want aging, second-hand JNR-era 415 Series train sets? Maybe Hisatsu should work out a deal to buy a number of electric train sets that are equivalent to the JR Kyushu 817 Series train sets?

@@iw2610 No, it's impossible. If JRF(Japan railway freight )decide to change the main route of south part of Kyushu to North part of Kyushu and Honshu(Osaka, Tokyo etc.) ,these facility will remove. BUT it has no enough reason now.

@@Sacto1654 Technically, Hisatu Orange Railway can use those train. but unfortunately this company don't profit enough money to manage electrical train. In December 2020, JR Kyushu'S 787 series is only electrical train running Hhisatsu orange railway(Every Thursday only. It use as cruise train"36plus3")
