I just got my first 4K (0.47” DMD with XPR) projector and have been filming slomo videos to catch pixelshifting in action, and thought I’d make a video on it myself, but then came across yours and read your entire article. I was capturing the edges and corners to see the discrete ‘shifts’ clearly but you went above and beyond that showing the XPR module itself. Way better than the basic stuff I’ve got, great video! I will say though, I’m running my projector at 120”, and have been a little underwhelmed by the 4k clarity it gives sometimes- almost being more used to the ‘screen door’ effect of seeing specific pixels and using that as my gauge of clarity… but seeing your XPR on/XPR off before and after showing exactly the same “wait 1080p kinda looks better to me?” Results, I realize it’s probably just a personal bias I’ve got being used to seeing pixels one by one. The shifting kind of acts as a bit of a smoothing or anti-aliasing function for text like you demo’d I guess. Seriously awesome video though, I run my own website and am really inspired by the detail and effort that goes into your articles now that I discovered it.

This makes since now, I just got a AAXA p7+ “native 1080” and it only passed 720p test and looks far worse then my older 1080 projector. Also I have there 4k although it looks better then my 1080p projector it’s only passing the 2k test. I was trying to explain to the company that this is 720p and they swear it’s not. Seems scamy to me.

Was about to pay double for a 4K model. Its a good thing I saw this, I prefer the crispness of the non-XPR.

When the contents move it's actually feels a lot crisper than demonstrated here with still picture with type. I was thinking of getting true 4k one but ended up with a laser TV with this tech. I'd say the pictures gaming and 4k movie feels a lot better than native 1080p one. Really happy with my purchase, especially when the dmd goes bad (eventually they will with heavy use) did I appreciate this. If you run off warranty it's like 300$ fix vs. you can't get hold of the components hence 5000$ loss.

I think showing something like an icon that has 1px wide elements would have helped a lot.

if you sit about 10cm away from your projector screen, and use a microscope to see your pixels, then you might even notice them

Well... the text doesn't look any sharper with XPR.

This was 1st used in the 18 hundreds film was found. And people did not see it. It was 3 frame each was taken with a colour fly wheel. Projected with a coloured fly wheal was BW film.

Would like to see a demo that includes a 3840x2160 alternating Black/White grid... every-other row & column black/white, show how incapable pixel-shifting is at truly showing 8Mpixels.

4k text doesn't look as sharp as just 1080p. Thanks for the explaining. I don't think pixel shifting technology is great if you prefer sharpness in picture.

Awesome! Your video really help me understanding my content. I had a 720p projector DLP however later I change to 4K DLP, I was not satisfied the edges and sharpens from the 4k DLP. Now I understand why so. Feel like these guys cheated me by selling a stupid technology for a higher price. Can I ask one question, if the manufacture claim native 4k support in their projector, do they actually have 4k resolution or are they trying to cheat again with XPR module. Please advise. Thanks.
