Use a windproof lighter (the jet type with a blue flame) to light these. the yellow flame produces carbon, the carbon kills the coating on the catalyst. So instead of the catalyst lasting about 70 uses (ignitions) before it gives up from sooting, it will last for hundreds. Never EVER pour fluid on the catalyst! one sure way to reduce its life to a few tens of uses. Also these work on vapour and not wicking, so no need to have any contact with the cotton to the catalyst, in fact the exact opposite - NEVER have contact between the cotton and the catalyst as this stops atomisation of the fuel and produces carbon, which, yes you guessed it, shortens the life of the catalyst... Otherwise a great reliable bit of kit that will last for many years with out needing any parts replaced...

You don't have to pick out the inside so its touching the wick, it doesn't work like a candle it actually works on vapour....and you seriously do not put petrol on the wick so it catches light. PLEASE everybody follow the zippo instructions on the box.

The burner is not a wick, it is a catalytic mesh/pad. The cotton in the base is to hold fuel and prevent leakage, and it definitely should not touch the catalytic pad. Lighter fluid/naptha can actually damage cheaper catalytic pads. USA made ones are usually platinum and more expensive, while the Chinese ones seem to be made of paladium and iron. Or so I'm told... Also, the outer bag helps control oxygen intake to the burner. Without the bag they can get too hot. You can find catalytic pads online and just replace it, not the whole burner.

I love mine! I've noticed that if you expose the top a bit like in the picture it heats up a lot more and is super toasty.

Do not pull the cotton out. Liquids do not ignite. The lighter fluid itself does not ignite. All liquids, however, naturally produce vapour. It is the vapour that ignites. The lighter fluid will produce vapour. That vapour will contact the catalytic converter (it is not a wick) and burn. The cotton does not need to contact the catalytic converter for this to happen.

You think two would be needed for wild camping Scotland one in each pocket or will one be enough allso does the 6 hour one reach the same temperature?
@wizard1canada
@wizard1canada 3 жыл бұрын
Camping in Scotland sounds amazing. Both versions work in the same way so I would expect both will reach same Temps, just difference in the duration.

@SilverWatcher.

No flame a chemical reaction from vapors with the platinum a red. Oal or ember produces 120 to 130 degrees Fahrenheit

How long does the cotton last before you replace it?
@alexsamaniego4734
@alexsamaniego4734 3 жыл бұрын
You never replace it. It will stay good for yrs.
@TomsonTheOne
@TomsonTheOne 2 жыл бұрын
You don't have to replace the cotton. The catalyst (what he calls "wick" here) has to be replaced eventually, but I never had to replace it. Because it is a catalyst and NOT a wick, it should not directly contact the fuel, though. No pulling out the wool and no dropping fuel directly onto it to light it on fire. That will drastically reduce the longevity and the ability to use it safely.

Do not follow these lighting instructions ever! The catalytick burner should NEVER be consumed by flames. Taht will quickly damage the birner material. Just fill it..replace the burner...replace the top....leave it sit upright 10 minutes..THEN light the burner for 5 to 15 seconds, only letting the fire flicker over the burner material. It will begin to heat and glow without any FIRE coming from the top! Then replace the burner and top again and place it in the bag!
