We have a new Disney hotel on the westcoast! Here is my full grand opening day experience including a full tour of the new DVC villas at the Disneyland hotel (Discovery Tower). I tour the deluxe studio, one bedroom, and three bedroom grand villa! I tell you how it FEELS to be there and how it compares to the Grand Californian and the other amazing Disneyworld resorts. Is it worth the rediculous transient tax to buy here as a DVC member? Watch and find out.
My podcast with more thoughts: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast...

-----
COST TO OWN DVC AT THE DISNEYLAND VILLAS:
100 points minimum buy in for new owners: $23,381.30 upfront cost
$906 in annual dues + $278 annual transient tax
That’ll get you about 6 nights in a duo studio or 5 nights in a deluxe studio every year during my favorite time of year- Halloween and Christmas season
50 point add-on minimum for current DVC owners:
$11,855.65 upfront cost
$453 annual dues + $139 annual transient tax
That’ll get you about 3 nights in a duo studio or 2 nights in a deluxe studio every year, Halloween and Christmas season
For comparison, the annual maintenance cost as of right now, for the Grand Californian is $804 for 100 points. And that includes the transient tax built in.
That is $380 less than the Disneyland hotel DVC EVERY YEAR.
Aulani’s transient tax is about $10-$15 a night in these same scenarios, instead of $47 a night at these new DL Villas.

Listen to my podcast (Disneyworld Vacationer podcast) for more thoughts & tips on this new tower. If you love Bay Lake Tower, Contemporary Resort, and/or Disneyland Hotel, you will absolutely FALL IN LOVE with this DVC tower and wish their rooms were like these rooms because they are SPECTACULAR! I would only book preferred view though, because the standard views are really horrible views of the city, and it really takes you out of the Disney bubble. Also, most rooms don’t have balconies and that’s a huge negative (the garden duo studios do!). The one bedroom is the most beautiful of all the rooms here. Definitely rent points and stay in this new tower over Disneyland Hotel room, if you are deciding between that and staying at this new DVC tower, it’s way better than that. With all that being said, my preference would still be Grand Californian when staying at the Disneyland resort. That theming is more my vibe.

Grand Cal points resale are 250$ to 300$ per point depending on the contract. I have contracts at both DL DVC and couldn't be happier. I love the Craftsman's style of Grand Cal and the Modern 50-60's old school classic Disneyland tower vibe.

Yeah its so limited in options for DVC there that all options are expensive. But that transient tax AND high maintenance fees at DL DVC really rub me the wrong way. However, if Disneyland is your destination, whichever you own is the right choice. In your case both, which is AMAZING! How is the availability at DL DVC 7 months or less in advance? Easy to book for non-owners?

When you compare to WDW resorts you should compare to a similar style resort like Bay Lake Tower which also has a modern decor. When comparing to that WDW I think the Disney Theme is far more extensive in these new rooms. I have been a DVC member since 2006 WDW resorts have been moving away from heavy Disney Theaming and remodeled rooms are moving away. These rooms were chock full of Disney touches as you reacted to on your tour.

Great point! I haven’t stayed at Bay Lake Tower because that modern theming doesn’t speak to me (I have stayed at the Contemporary which I also wasn’t a fan of) so yes, if that was the comparison, DL Villas would be the winner. Here is the thing, the rooms are gorgeous because of the artwork and features like backlit lighting, crown molding etc. However, I look at theming as more than artwork and features. So even though they had some great art in the rooms, from the headboards to the carpeting and so forth, there wasn’t an actual theme to the whole thing that took me to another place like , say, the Polynesian does, or the Wilderness Lodge. It was a modern room with (beautiful) Disney touches. You get what I’m saying? I wish I was more articulate to convey my thoughts & explain my point of view better. With all that said, it was in line with the other Disneyland hotel towers theming, which, to be honest, doesn’t very much have a theme at all, to which I said it’s much better than that. Wow, DVC since 2006, your buy in must have been a killer deal!

@@disneyworldvacationer I get what you are saying, and I do agree that the Grand California is a much more “Disney” resort than the Disneyland hotel.

@@disneyworldvacationer The best looking Disney hotel is still Aulani followed by animal kingdom. I feel the worst lobby is in BLT:)

@@matthewwiemken7293 Definitely Bay Lake Tower I can’t even consider that a lobby 😂 . Funny you say that because when I went to Aulani, I said it’s most like Animal Kingdom Lodge out of all other resorts. I think Wilderness Lodge is the most beautiful though (right behind Aulani).

You are very lucky you got to see the Grand Villa. They weren’t showing it to the public. So many DVC channels were turned away. (From what they have posted) So sneaking in while mouse keeping was working was creative. I hope they don’t lose their jobs over this though.

I didn’t sneak in, I asked and was given permission. That’s surprising to hear though because when media was going in right after the opening celebration, I saw a bunch of people recording on the balconies of those rooms.

You said you wouldn’t buy there but would you rent points and stay there over the standard room at the Disneyland Hotel? I’m planning a trip there for the first time for my family of 3 and can’t decide which to book. Honest opinion!

100%! It is superior in every way to the Disneyland Hotel. I wish I was more clear but I said it very briefly at 33:28. If you can swing it, try to get preferred view because the standard views are REALLY bad views of the city streets. I’m assuming you would go with a deluxe studio? The garden duo studios have actual balconies which is really great but, you can only fit 2 people in there unless the 3rd is a baby.

To be fair, the best direct comparisons to WDW would be Bay Lake Tower and Copper Creek which are DVC properties attached to a larger Disney hotel. Same with Grand Cal DVC itself has no dedicated lobby/restaurants/shop. Disneyland Hotel doesn't have a very impressive lobby by comparison, but the pools and restaurants are significant. I'm happy there's at least a decent lobby at the Discovery tower so you can relax/chill in the DVC property without needing to leave the tower. BLT/Copper Creek/Grand Cal you pretty much have to go to the main building to have most things. This is easily one of the more themed DVC resorts - it's hard to say there's no Disney here - the imagineers hit you on so many obvious and subtle ways it's pretty amazing. I'm hoping they add a little more lighting and theming to Grand Cal when they do that refurb. Thanks for covering this - it's fun to see someone's first impressions and to go along on the journey. We loved our first stay in a studio and looking forward to a 1 bedroom stay in December.

Glad you got to experience it! How’s the availability short term? Does it look like you need that 11 month headstart to stay there? I’m assuming you meant Boulder Ridge (the seperate DVC building) , not Copper Creek. As I thought more about it, I would actually include the Polynesian as a viable comparison. The DVC buildings are pretty much the same distance as the DLH Discovery tower to the rest of the towers, shared amenities, except the main lobby being separate and GRAND. As I went back a second time ( kzbin.info/www/bejne/b2nHqXWVncyoaLcsi=NXywcBMgvRQPkrZ7 ) I actually sat in the lobby and had further thoughts about this. The issue I’m having when it comes to the themeing is, most of the themeing is in the art not in the actual furniture and fixtures. As an example, if you look at the Port Orleans Riverside royal rooms, the sink fixture is in the shape of Aladdin’s lamp , carpet from Aladdin is embedded in the carpet. There’s a bench that is the bench from beauty and the beast. That is true detailed Disney theming if your aim is Disney movies touches which is what DLH DVC was going for. In the DLH DVC tower, all the theming is basically just artwork ( which is really nice). The best embedded themeing I can think of at DLH DVC is the 3 fairys inscribed in the bathroom mirror. All that being said, I would still love to stay there it’s just the type of theming I prefer, and enjoy is more in the “fabric” of the building not just the paintings on the wall & not contemporary. I want to be taken elsewhere. To another time and place. I’ll give you a good test of themeing. If you were to remove all the art from the Disneyland hotel, DVC Tower, would there be much theme into it? It would basically be a very nice newly built hotel. Now if you take that same concept and apply it to the other Disney hotels , for instance the Grand Californian, if you took all the art down from there the theming is still fully present. Thats what I really dig. Im right there with you though, that Grand Cal refurb is much needed and I’m hoping for a bit more brightness and color.

I get ya - AKL or Poly take you to a different place where VDH is more about animation and Disneyland resort itself is the theme. Yes if you take down the artwork you still have the mirror details you mentioned, the color story panels on the exterior, the D shaped hallways, the shape of the pool, the mid-century design gates and white walls. The giant mural is artwork but so thoughtful and epic in size. I'm obviously a fan - haha. Interesting about fixtures - yes that would extend the story more for sure. Don't get me wrong we own at Grand Cal and love it there too. I'm trying to remember if other than the furniture if there's much theming in them. I'm hoping they add in a little more with the refurb. Plenty of forrest creature IP they could sprinkle in tastefully. But mostly just hoping for more lighting, less bulky furniture and of course murphy beds. Availability for VDH is currently (and probably will continue to be) pretty decentfor preferred studios. So many of them. Garden Studios seem to be the hot commodity currently. Only 1 grand villa has been declared for points. I just did a search for 7 months from today and there are zero rooms available for any room type (except some spotty for ADA rooms). I'm surpassed by this as there's been some until recently. I'm sure studio availability will calm down after the newness wears off. But 1-3 bedroom since there are so few of each may stay difficult. We change it up quite a bit and sometimes love larger rooms so decided to get some points there.

@@vocaljazzfan Thanks for the info! Very interesting to follow availability since this is the only DVC on the west coast with a decent amount of rooms. The garden duo studios seem like they are going to be the most saught after especially because of the balcony (akin to the AKL value studios). How was the view from your room? I won’t lie, part of me is scared for my reaction to staying at the Grand Californian studio in November for the first time after seeing these beautiful DLH studios. As a local, I’ve spent alot of time at GCH but never stayed overnight. My real anticipation is getting more info about the new DVC tower at the Polynesian, if it will be part of the current association , and the Cabins at Fort Wilderness. Exciting times ahead for DVC.
