8:30 This 270 degree turn alongside highway 357 is such a marvel of engineering. The bottom of deck of the bridge is over 50m (110 ft) above the water, to allow ships to pass under, with the deck for the road reaching 60m above the water. The only problem: there's no space to climb! The train needs to climb 30m (66 ft) upward from Shinbashi station to reach the Rainbow Bridge. Even a modern light rail like this, you just can't climb very much. I think the max incline for light rail is 5% (meaning, every 100 meter of track, you go up in elevation 5 meters). 2% is considered the default incline. So what did they do, to solve this problem? The engineers designed a giant helix! The track, and the highway, spiral upward in a loop! Genius.

This is a bus/train in a trough. monorail rides on a single beam down the center of the vehicle. But it is very interesting none the less.

This is not a monorail. A monorail either rides on or hangs from a single beam. (example Disney Monorail) This people mover runs on two tracks.
@sugoiijapan3 жыл бұрын
Yes you are right, it’s not technically a monorail. I will keep the title as it is cause people use to call it that way. But thank you for the feedback! :)

@@sugoiijapan It is not just Japanese people that confuse an "autonomous train" with a "monorail train" = usually both are "driverless", and that is probably the reason. I believe that you shot this with an Apple iPhone using 4k = looks like what my Apple iPhone motion imagery would look like.

Does anyone know why is the railway above the ground? It must be really expensive to build like that. Is there any practical purpose?
@PhirePhlame8 ай бұрын
One immediate one is that there's no crossings, meaning that rail traffic and car traffic don't have to dance around and intersect with each other. There's also at least one stretch where the rail corridor runs parallel with a street directly below.
