The Story of Salim Ali: The Birdman of India
At a school in Bellur, during the prayer session, the headmaster announced that there would be a gathering in front of the local temple that evening to celebrate the centenary of Salim Ali, the renowned ornithologist. The Bellur Youth Association was organizing the event, and the headmaster invited everyone to join.
The children were excited and ready to go. Then, Hiremanni Tara asked, "Who is Salim Ali, sir?"
The teacher explained, "Salim Ali was a famous ornithologist who dedicated his entire life to birdwatching. He worked tirelessly to raise awareness about environmental conservation. Today, we will learn more about him."
The children were curious. Mari asked, "What is birdwatching, sir?"
The teacher replied, "Birdwatching involves observing various species of birds, understanding their nesting habits, behaviors, calls, egg-laying, care for their young, feeding habits, and migration patterns. Since you all live in Bellur, you must already be familiar with many birds."
The children eagerly set off for the event.
The program began, and the members of the Bellur Youth Association were actively participating. Dr. Shankarappa stood up to give a speech.
"Respected president, esteemed members, and dear children, today I will talk about Salim Ali. Our beloved town, Bellur, is a sanctuary for migratory birds from across the country and the world. It was a place cherished by Salim Ali."
Dr. Shankarappa continued, "Once, as a ten-year-old boy, Salim Ali hit a small bird. It fell to the ground, and he recognized it as a dove. But when he noticed the yellow color on its chest, he was curious and confused. He didn’t know which bird it was. His uncle, Amiruddin, noticed this and took him to the Bombay Natural History Society. There, Salim Ali's questions were answered, and his interest in birds grew."
"Later, Salim Ali went to Burma for mining work, but he was captivated by the forest birds there. He studied them and then returned to Mumbai. His passion for birds changed the course of his life."
"Salim Ali’s interest in birds grew even further, and he became a guide at the Bombay Natural History Society. He also spent a year in Germany studying bird life. Upon returning to India, he was dismissed from his job. For several years, he remained unemployed."
"However, this adversity worked in his favor. He gained immense knowledge about birds and earned global recognition. He wrote several popular books on birdwatching. Salim Ali was honored with many awards and recognitions, including the Padma Bhushan by the Indian government."
"Salim Ali donated the five lakh rupees he received as a reward to the organization that helped him grow in his field. This donation benefited many birdwatchers and researchers. In 1987, Salim Ali passed away at the age of 91, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire millions of bird lovers worldwide."
Dr. Shankarappa concluded, "Salim Ali was not highly educated, but his love for birds led him to study them. His dedication made him one of the most famous ornithologists in the world. His deep practice and commitment to learning turned him into a great person. Every child who loves birds should be inspired by Salim Ali. Like him, you should love the environment and learn more about animals and birds."
As Dr. Shankarappa finished his speech, he forgot to clap, lost in the world of his thoughts.
