4K NEW 2018 Mercedes AMG GLA45 - Hot Hatch or Hot SUV?

The 2018 Mercedes AMG GLA45 has the highest horsepower in any production 4 cyl SUV. The little 2.O turbo puts put a whopping 375HP! Regardless if you think its a hatch or an SUV, this little AWD car with a hand built engine really performs and is the perfect for those wanting to enter into the AMG family.

I got my 2018 GLA45 for 3 years now, no issue, absolutely love the rumbling exhaust note, the steering feel is just right, tight enough as a sports car (tried GLC43, too loose like Audi).

The lag is in the transmission more than it is the motor. From a dead stop the computers are cautiously releasing the clutch peddle. Caution is abandoned with enough (excessive) throttle, that then needs to be backed off once the clutch is fully out. It really helps to pretend you are operating a clutch pedal to appreciate what is happening. Happy 45 owner here.

I know that there's serious issues listed with the transmission in the 2015 and 2016's, apparently the programming/transmission was improved after those years. Where the car would lurch unexpectantly and/or make large clunking noises where the driver thought they were actually struck by another vehicle. It's an issue that has even occurred (though not as frequently) in 2018 models. It's an issue that MB is aware of, though hasn't posted any tech papers or recalls on. Most of the time they require a video of it happening in your vehicle before even doing anything. Some 'fixes' were done via programming, a few others literally had the entire transmission replaced.

@@guanyeo3547 it’s been great! If you do decide to tune the car with a Catless downpipe, double check the flange between the downpipe and turbo, it’s known to get loose and trigger a CEL. If it happens, just tighten it up and clear the code and you should be good

11:20 when’s he’s talking about the track package. It’s actually called the dynamic plus package. And it included a limited slip differential, higher top speed 167. The adjustable Suspension and Race mode. So the car he’s reviewing does in fact have the track package that he mentioned.

You mentioned a comfort mode and also said you would drive over some bumps but no feedback on how it was in comfort mode to use this as a daily driver. Many skip mentioning how bumpy a ride this vehicle has and you almost reported it but it was left out.

anyone who has an opinion of any substance should first drive one before becoming an armchair expert. this vehicle is a cut above all the hatches except the rs3 but it actually has a better chassis though not as good straight line speed. it will beat your usual rally cars being an unmodded evo or Scooby

It doesn't perform well as an suv It doesn't perform well as a hatch as it's higher making it less aerodynamic and losing handling abilities of the hatch Interior looks cluttered and untidy too many buttons And that screen looks like some cheap Chinese product that is placed on top like an after thought And then reliability and maiantance cost

nonsense , it drives just about as well as an a45, you can hardly tell the difference. it is larger and heavier than the a45 which is the reason it is slightly slower.

Pretty sure it's lower than a WRX/STi as well. Engineering Explained compared it to an STi and mentioned it being lower. So there's that.

@Tom K Tom K I drive a c63s wagon. I looked at the A45 and RS3 in 2016 alongside other cars and the GLA 45 was a bigger version of the A. I liked it so much that I bought one. Sold it in Feb this year but it cost me nil in maintenance other than replacing a damaged tyre and an annual service. If there is one downside to the vehicle, it is the rear visibility. It handles as well as any hot hatch and can also do dirt roads etc just like a rally car. I do miss the little beast. If I could do it all again , i would definitely get the aero pack with that mad looking spoiler.
