I left out Ozzie, Winfield, Gwynn, Coryell, Joiner, Winslow, Muncie, Chandler, the Sockers, Concerts, the Chicken and 50+ years of great times...Sorry. We never won a Super Bowl or World Series in San Diego, but at least we still have a great city to live in.

Going to miss this stadium. I miss the San Diego Chargers. I miss the feeling of electricity in the air. The countless fly overs, and that cannon roaring every time we scored. I will tell my kids one day about the days when I was their age. These moments I will always cherish. And I pray for a day where my Chargers return back home where they belong.

I saw my first major league game in San Diego Stadium in 1969. Tha Padres were new, too. I got Frank Reberger's autograph and then spent many evenings and weekend days in the 1970s with a cooler full of beer occupying a $1.50 General Admission seat out in center field.

I’ve been there too many times to count. The first time was 1987 when the Padres beat the Dodgers with a homer in the 9th. I was there in 98 for the playoffs. I was there in 98 for the Super Bowl. I was there in 95 when the Chargers came home after beating the Steelers to go to the Super Bowl. Watching it come down breaks my heart. I left San Diego which has left a hole in my heart after Tony and Junior both died. This I guess is right on par for the course.

@@pringlemanzzz "But they that will be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown men in destruction and perdition" (1st Timothy 6:9, KJV). An even worse example was Walter O'Malley. When he moved the Dodgers from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, he was scouting locations to build a new baseball stadium. (L.A. Coliseum was used as a temporary facility, but it was too small for baseball.) O'Malley and the mayor flew around in a helicopter and the mayor invited him to pick any plot of ground. O'Malley pointed at Chavez Ravine and said, "How about that one?" The mayor answered, "Okay." Of course, neither of them cared that the land was already occupied by a thriving Latino community, with houses, schools and businesses. The city of Los Angeles cruelly evicted the people from their land, gave it to O'Malley, and up went Dodger Stadium.

The Padres and Chargers both won divisional championship titles. Both teams made it respectively to the World Series and the Super Bowl. Jack Murphy Stadium holds many records that will never be broken. It also holds many memories that can never be erased. It was beyond unique in its design and is nostalgic beyond belief to those who experienced the magic that was performed there. Long live the memory of the Murph! It seems the Chargers had a pretty competitive team for many years and after watching the Lions at 1:00pm the 4:00pm game a lot of the time was the chargers playing another classic game at the Murph. I was lucky enough to work in the stadium as a teen and young adult. I met many pro players there amongst them Johnny Unitas. I got to shake his hand and watch him warm up before games. There are a lot of names on my list of players I got to talk to and shake hands as a kid. I would always get there early and go down in the field and shag balls for the kickers and punters. Ray Guy, George Blanda to name a few and of course from our kickers and punters too. Rolf Benirske... Many times I met and talked to Dan Fouts, I worked in construlayer on and worked with one of the guys who blocked for him in Oregon. Once when I was watching practice I told Dan his buddy worked on the same job I did and he asked where it was and lo and behold one day he showed up to see his Oregon teammate. It was cool. Well the last time I was at the “Murph” I took my wife to her first pro football game there. It was the Chargers vs the dreaded Raiders. Chargers won big time and it was fun to watch her enjoy the game. I’ll miss the Murph and all the dear memories it holds for me it was part of my youth and spent so many years watching games there.

Both Fenway Park and Wrigley Field are over 100 years old. Lights were finally installed at Wrigley Field in 1988 despite public opposition to altering the original structure. You can add San Diego to the list of cities that have no sense of nostalgia or history.

You and me both. The AFL days, every nfl playoff game. The days of my life were spent there. Anyone who was there in Jan 95 will never forget what it was to be a city United and feeling pure joy. ESPN radio went live coast to coast on its national feed as the team arrived. The whole country knew what was going on in our little town... the games, the moments, just too many - so many - smiles and tears all at once. Rolf walking off the field with Louie and then charger power beating the Steelers 35-7. There were 7 turnovers in the first quarter between both Teams that day. 17-14 was the cursed charger playoff score! They lost that day in 79 ....Houston literally blocking a short FG & almost running it back for aTD. I think it is was Vernon perry running it back. The oilers scored a TD on a running play and went in the half with the lead. Us Charger fans failed to calculate that Houston was a veteran playoff team in the late 70,s winning on the road. then by the 2000’s the jets did it twice. 17-14. If we only had a decent kicker the whole the whole destiny of the chargers in SD would be different. The Garvey game, Tony’s first game. Even Fernando Valenzuela pitching at the murph on a Monday night in front of 51,000. SD is a great sports town. And it was a great place to see many great moments. It aged as we all do...and really should have been replaced 20 years ago but that’s a whole other story. I loved being there. I’ll watch the old tapes and dream about those days -and I’ll remember the players I was friends with as well as the family and neighbors we went to the games with. Taking my wife on our first date. San Diego stadium was the place of dreams for me. Thanks for the video.

It's not safe anymore. The city just let it completely deteriorate. SDSU was supposed to play 1 more year here before playing in Carson. One look at the place, once SDSU got the keys, it was better to destroy it than to try to fix it for a few games.
@stphinkle
@stphinkle 3 жыл бұрын
@@markz6676 I think the coronavirus pandemic accelerated the decision. They originally planned to play two more seasons there, but the pandemic put an end to it and they wanted to use this time of no fans to start construction and demolition early. They plan to build a new stadium that will be in San Diego on the same piece of property for 35,000 seats opening in a couple of years.
@markz6676
@markz6676 3 жыл бұрын
@@stphinkle I really don't think Covid19 had a major part in SDSU's decision. SDSU found animals living in the press box. Concrete was crumbling worse than before. The city, essentially walked away from the property after the 2019 Holiday Bowl. There are articles in the San Diego Union that support this. It would have cost the University too much to get the place in shape. Covid 19 was just the final straw.
@stphinkle
@stphinkle 3 жыл бұрын
@@markz6676 I think it did play a role. I think that if fans were not going to be allowed in the stands anyway due to COVID-19, that it would be cheaper to start the demolition construction rather than pay for security and maintenance costs for a year. It was probably cheaper to rent the stadium in Carson for a few game days and pay for a two hour each way bus ride for the players than pay for maintenance on SDCCU for a year. It was probably cheaper in the long haul to start the demolitition now and have the new stadium opened when the pandemic ends or shortly thereafter. I also see why SDSU decided to play in Carson. NCAA Division I rules stay that a stadium has to have a certain number of seats and there are no other stadiums big enough to qualify for division I status that were suitable. Petco Park would qualify but the shape is designed for Baseball and it would be very costly to put a football field in it and would have bad sight lines. The other colleges in the area (Southwestern, Mesa USD, UCSD, City, San Diego Christian, Palomar, CSUSM, etc do not have big enough stadiums to qualify). Our High Schools (San Diego High, Hoover, Scripps Ranch, Patrick Henry, etc) stadiums are also not big enough. Many Orange County college stadums are not big enough either (Chapman, Concordia, UC Irvine, Orange Coast College, Cal State Fullerton, Saddleback, Fullerton College, etc). Some of these colleges do not have football programs at all. The same was true in Riverside and San Bernadino Counties. That is why I think SDSU decided to go all the way to Carson to play at CSUDH's Dignity Health Sports Park.
