Staying with my partner’s family in East Tennessee and I saw a firefly for the first time. They are the most magical thing I’ve ever seen in my entire life. His whole family thinks it’s so silly that I am so amazed by these bugs. It’s been a week now and every night I run outside and watch them. They’re only around for 20-30 minutes and then they vanish. It’s like magic.

A firefly got into the house tonight, so I turned off the lights and played this video on my phone while holding it up close to the insect to see if it would react - and it eventually started wiggling around and blinked back! So that's a thumbs-up from me and another one from the firefly. :)

The cool light can only come from a computer generating the universe Fireflies light up by producing a chemical reaction inside their bodies that results in illumination (bioluminescence). “When oxygen combines with calcium, adenosine triphosphate (ATP) and the chemical luciferin in the presence of luciferase, a bioluminescent enzyme, light is produced. Unlike a light bulb, which produces a lot of heat in addition to light, a firefly's light is "cold light" without a lot of energy being lost as heat. This is necessary because if a firefly's light-producing organ got as hot as a light bulb, the firefly would not survive the experience.
