The French have the most interesting trains, railway signaling and equipment in the world. Love the smooth transition between the 1500 Vdc and 25 kVac networks. The 300-320 km speeds are awesome. Viva la France! Thanks for an excellent trip through beautiful France.

Very interesting and informative video. The viewer gets a good impression of the different ranges of speed, curve radii, switch radii etc. Particularly, after passing the mill 14:35, the transition from conventional track (160 km/h top speed) to high speed track (300 km/h top speed) at 14:55, at the intersection of the Lyon Part Dieu - Grenoble line to the LGV Rhones - Alpes (coming from Lyon St. Exupery airport and leading to the South, direction Marseille) with its bridges and curved ramps is very informative for a model railroader (at 15:30, you can see two TGV Ouigo standing on the left side of the LGV high speed line as if they would wait for our train to pass by, which looks strange). Also, the Triangle des Angles 59:40 and the double viaduct 1:00:25 shortly before Avignon TGV are spectacular, as well as the view to the motorways A 7 (Autoroute du Soleil) near Montelimar 47:45 , 49:15 and of the A 9 (Autoroute la Languedocienne) shortly after its Orange bifurcation (view from the train to the left 56:40, you see the suspension bridge (viaduc de Roquemaure) and A 9 bridge crossing the Rhone), then the rocky tunnel 57:10, then crossing the A 9 again 57:50, which leads to Nimes.

Respect to the French for building the TGV, it is a great accomplishment and the second of its kind in the world at the time of its inauguration (after the Japanese Shinkansen). It's a shame there are few such trains in the eastern parts of the EU where I live. Why can't the EU build an LGV from Paris to Bucharest, all the way from West to East, like they have in China? Such a line would make my life a lot easier and help me to avoid crowded airports and planes.

sorry ... first was ETR (elettro treno rapido) in 1936 On 6 December 1937 the ETR 200 reached a top speed of 201 km/h (125 mph) on the Rome-Naples line (between the stations of Campoleone and Nettunia). At that time all the world came to Italy to see the world first high speed railway lines. On 20 July 1939, the ETR 212, driven by driver Alessandro Cervellati, established a new world record running (on the average speed for the whole run) between Florence and Milan at 165 km/h (103 mph), and also improving the absolute top speed record up to 203 km/h (126 mph) in the stretch from Pontenure to Piacenza. A popular myth held that Benito Mussolini himself was at the controls, but this doesn't hold to historical evidence. And this line was not so easy and flat like the TGV in France, the line was more difficult as there was Appennines crossing

That is because they use real-world rail maps AND get assistance from the folks that build and operate the lines and trains (such as SNCF and Alstom). I grabbed this route because the TGV Duplex is the direct ancestor of the Alastom Avelia series - which includes the US Acela 21 AKA Acela II AKA Avelia Liberty - built by Alstom in Hornell, NY - which is NOT in TSW 2 yet. (It will almost certainly come as a later add-on, as Alstrom Hornell is outfitting both test trainsets for the start of revenue service either later this year or early next - after they absolutely SHREDDED US rail speed records in testing - repeating what THIS train did in SNCF testing.)

A great video and love the text commentary. I love French railways, the technical superiority, innovation and diversity of them, far superior to the UK I really like the legacy DC network for some reason. What is the maximum speed of the tgv on 1500DC?. Also the pantographs are they simply dedicated to each voltage? I love the BB26000 locos, we travelled behind one from Tours to Paris, it was I believe on 1500 all the way and I had a speedo on my phone and on one section we did 200 kph.
@Railtrotter5 жыл бұрын
Thanks :) the maximum speed of the TGV on 1500DC is 220 km/h on the Paris - Bordeaux classic line for exemple :) And yes every panto is adapted to its voltage, the 25kV AC panto is too light for the heavy DC catenary and the imposing panto DC could damage the very slight AC catenary :)
@Steven_Rowe5 жыл бұрын
@@Railtrotter thankyou. What i find really silly is in the UK they were quick to adopt 25kv which is a great system but also either converted 1500dc to 25kv or in the case of the Manchester to Sheffield route closed the line. In the UK on 25KV the maximum speed is 200kph except for the Eurostar to St Pancras The French have once again shown they know about trains. Obviously 25kv is superior as for the same power you only 1/16th of the current.

Yes and when it is up again in the tgv line, it is set to a particular position that allows only reduced up and down mouvements. Bonjour.

Interesting that there seems to be no block control for most of the trip. Is there no possibility of a train being ahead? Or is there only one trip down at a time? I just wish we had something like the TGV in the US.
@equilat5 жыл бұрын
On high speed lines, it is almost impossible for drivers to see wayside signals or to react in time for stopping. So, high speed lines are equipped with cab signalling (this system is called TVM here). Thanks to that, drivers know at any time the maximum speed they can reach to stay at a safe distance from another train (and to respect the maximum speed authorized on the track section). If a train had to slow down, more and more restrictive indications would be given to the driver to ensure a progressive stop. If the driver does not comply in time with these indications emergency brakes are automatically applied. To help the driver to remember where the speed indications may change, block markers are installed along the track (signs with a yellow arrow on a blue background).

@@equilat That makes sense. What we call high speed rail in the US is hardly that after watching these videos.

can't help notice that the train appears to go through several abandoned stations on the slow sections in both ends of the trip, like at 1:36:01 and 1:37:03, along with a few at the beginning of the video. I'm not super familiar with the French train system, but at least to me those look like old station platforms

I've done the trip so many times now, I knew to just subtract ~40 minutes from the end to find Avignon. The older Train Simulator actually has the full Lyon-Marseille route, but the bit from Avignon to Marseille is the most fun anyway, still i'd love to see the route expanded in TSW2 in the future, and they should add in the TGV Réseau for a little more variety!
