2021 - WALK TOUR - THE BEST OPEN MARKET
Weekly market - Thursday
No visit to the north of Portugal will be complete without visiting a fair and the Feira de Barcelos is, without a doubt, the fair of fairs in Portugal.
The Barcelos fair as we know it today is the result of an evolutionary process suffered over several centuries, despite its uncertain origins, it is believed that it took place in the 13th century, at a time when cereals were evaluated by the “ Barcelos measure”. It is true that in 1412, D. João I, at the request of the Count of Barcelos D. Afonso, granted a letter for the realization of a fair of the year in Campo do Salvador, the current field of the fair. In the 16th century, motivated by the miraculous appearance of a Cross, the origin of the legend of the Lord of the Cross, the town expanded outside the walls and the Barcelos fair evolved. Its establishment in the middle of the Temple of Senhor Bom Jesus da Cruz, on a weekly basis, on Thursdays, should date back to the end of the 17th century / 18th century. Until the mid-twentieth century, the Barcelos fair was the stage of excellence for the sustainability, affirmation and promotion of Barcelos chinaware and later of the barristas, becoming an event of European and world notoriety, due to its tourist interest, ethnographic and cultural.
Currently, it is a traditional, markedly rural fair that favors the sale of local agricultural products and is linked to the sale of handcrafted products, popular arts and crafts such as Barcelos dishes, roosters, woodwork, linen and embroidery, pottery , weaving, wood carving and iron forging, among others. If you visit the Barcelos Fair, don't hesitate to be part of the movement and color and test your art of negotiating and haggling! At the first rays of sun and before the rooster starts crowing… reserve the day to participate and experience a weekly event that unites the city!
