For those who may be interested, the Umayyad Mosque of Damascus was originally a Roman temple of Jupiter. Later on when the Roman's embraced christianity, the temple was converted into a church known as "The Church of John the Baptist" and it only held a small part of the temple. When Muslims took Damascus, they used a part of the yard surrounding the church for their prayers, but as time went by, shared prayers between Muslims and Christians became inconvenient.. and let's not say more. As such, the Umayyad Calif, Al Walid bin Abulmalik bought the church off, knocked it down and built the mosque around 750. I'm not really sure of the date. Since then, the mosque was burnt, knocked down and rebuilt so many times by everyone who ruled Damascus. The last refurbishment of the mosque was done in 1993 by the late president of Syria Hafez Al Assad. Currently the mosque consists of two main parts: the prayers hanger, and the yard. The hanger extends from east to west, and is topped by a fine dome known as "the Eagle dome" by the Damascenes. The mosque has three minarets, or towers. The largest is located to the north of the mosque and it is known as "the Bride", and no, it has nothing to do with Uma Thurman in Kill Bill. The western tower is called the "Qaitbay minaret ", and the eastern one is known as the "Eastern minaret " or the "White minaret " or the "Minaret of Jesus" and it is believed that it marks the spot where Jesus, peace be upon him, will come back at the end of time. The mosque is a very important religious and historic landmark in Damascus, and though it is treated respectfully by Syrians and tourists from elsewhere, some tourists from some countries started performing weird disrespectful rituals in it, the last of which was some Hindu schmuck doing some disrespectful rituals in the hanger with his followers. Luckily, the watchmen of the mosque, saw that and kicked that hindu out.

This mosque was built by the Syrians, with Syrian craftsmanship, Syrian hands, and Syrian resources. Except for the marble plates, as high quality marble and granite can't be found in Syria. Through centuries, Syrians did not bring companies from England or Germany or crane operators from India or Bangladesh, with all due respect to all the mentioned nations, but we Syrians built it ourselves, Syrian builders, Syrian Craftsmen, Syrian architects and so on. This monument is a live example that we, Syrians, with a little bit of opportunity can build miracles and sustain them for thousands of years.

Fabulous Mosque my friend. Very interesting to watch this. I think it will be a big KZbin hit as there are not so many travelers these days to Damascus. You can clearly see the Byzantine origin of the Mosque most notable in the transept, the narthex and the frontex. Also the relics of John the Baptist.

First, this site was a pagan temple for Jupiter worshipers then Christians occupied it by force. Second, most Christians in Al-Sham region converted to Islam by their free will. These people had contributed a lot to build the churches there so they had the right to take their share of the churches and convert them to mosques. Third, although converted Christians to Islam had the right to take their share of churches but they did not. The only thing I read in the history books that they shared the church of Saint John with Christians and prayed together although Muslims were the rulers of that region. Fourth, the Muslim Khalif built three churches for Christians in exchange for the Church of Saint John and the Christians of Damascus accepted the offer willingly.

On the contrary, Christians did the opposite in all their history. Christians did not allow the followers of other religions to live with them so they killed and persecuted Muslims and Jews.

The Umayyad Mosque is indeed a very beautiful work of architecture. The site is formerly a Christian church and both Christians and Muslims pray in it for decades before the mosque is built on it. Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik ibn Marwan, 6th Umayyad Caliph, decided to build a mosque on the former Christian site to accommodate Damascus' growing Muslim population. In response to the protest by the city's Christian population, he ordered that all confiscated churches in the city be returned to them as compensation.

Actuslly before it was Christian it was a Roman temple and the columns inside are still the Roman ones with extensions. Much of the decorative work in the mosque was done by Christian artisans who were better at it than their Islamic counterparts and were paid to do the work
