I grew up in Algeria, it is purity culture. I had no choice but to cover or people whould think I was a who*e. There is social pressure to cover. When I came to America it was the first time I felt the wind on my head, it was a beautiful experience. I have since left Islam, and if I ever went back I would literally be killed for leaving Islam and becoming a Catholic Christian. There is no freedom of religion in Muslim nations. Hi Sly, when I was a teenager like any other in the Arab world I was a big fan of Nizar Qabbani, a well known Syrian poet, I never really understood some of his poetry about Damascus, but when I went there and as I was walking in this alley in old Damascus, the breeze shook up the branches of a jasmine tree and heavens rained soft petals over me and this fragrant night breeze finally helped me understand what Nizar’s poems in love for Damascus were all about. Wish Syria and Syrians all the best. Another great vlog, thanks. Ps. I think you’re lucky you had this guide, he seems like good company. Best regards.

Great to see its returning to some kind of normalcy. I went there in 2017 with a TV channel and we made a documentary about the Sayyida Zaynab shrine area (Syria: My Return). There was still shelling going on then, and a busload of Iranian pilgrims had been blown up two months earlier - the shell of the vehicle had been left near the shrine. Prayers for peace and that people can return home too.

@@daredevil3598 US and general western imperialism interference has definitely massively contributed to the current situations not only in Syria but across the whole middle east, of course you have to share some of the blame with the governments of those countries as well and the groups all fighting within those countries, but if you research you will find the initial destabilization and political interference from the west has been a huge factor.

I wondered if you were going there. You didn’t mention Syrian refugees in Lebanon. I’ve met a few young Syrians on trips to Denmark and Sweden. Such sweet young men, who you can’t believe what they’ve gone through. Other Syrians I met were in the US, and they’d been here since the early 80’s to go to college. Different circumstances back in the day.
