The Ogoh-ogoh parade in Kuta on Tuesday March 21, 2023.
Each year the Balinese celebrate the day of Nyepi (Day of Silence), Before ushering the new year (Saka 1945), they hold one day of self-reflection; hence complete silence is to be observed from dawn to dawn.
The day before Nyepi, called ‘Hari Pengerupukan’, is all the more exciting. Here, the Desa Adat Kuta organizes a Ogoh-ogoh contest, where all the youth organization (Sekaa teruna) from Desa Adat Kuta has to participate, where all the 13 Banjars (neighborhoods) has to present one Ogoh-ogoh.
Ogoh-ogoh is a statue, made from iron bars, bamboo and paper mache, expressing different forms of Bhuta Kala (evil spirits) that surrounds us. The evil spirits have to be summoned, paraded along the main street on the eve of Nyepi, and afterwards burned as an act of purification.
