Visiting Muskegon, Michigan was a real joy. If you want to go to a town that is laid back and quaint in almost every way, this is the place to make a pit stop.
This video starts at the Union Depot, walks through town, strolls through the local farmers markets, gazes at historic architecture, and even goes inside the gorgeous historic Hackley Library.
Muskegon is known for fishing, sailing regattas, pleasure boating, and as a commercial and cruise ship port. It is a popular vacation destination because of the expansive freshwater beaches, historic architecture, and public art collection. It is the most populous city along the western shore of Michigan. At the 2020 census the city population was 38,318.

What a amazing transformation Muskegon is going through! The downtown was so empty after the shopping mall was torn down, now so many new apartments and condos. (Those beautiful places way above my price range.)😢 My old hometown of Saginaw is attempting to rebuild like Muskegon, but is years behind this city. It's so attractive, kind of like a little Grand Rapids, but minus all that awful big city traffic!

Good video but, man, you shoulda seen it when I was a kid! At first, when you were down by the depot the city looked dead but there's not much going on down that way these days. I was glad to hear people greeting you as you walked by. I spent a lot of time downtown in my 64 years. So many memories. So many landmarks sadly missing. Thanks for sharing the video.

This is a wonderful portrait of my hometown. Muskegon has been through a lot of challenges over the last thirty years with the loss of manufacturing, population, and the accompanying loss of tax base, but it has turned the corner and is coming back stronger and better than ever! Thanks so much for showing the beauty of this city and its people.

Thank you so much for watching and letting me know how much you liked it! It always means so much when a native actually finds value in it. I’m glad you enjoyed it! Have you seen the museum video I did there?

@@GregBoswell428 No, I haven't seen it yet. I loved your approach of just walking and filming without any narration. The picture quality is superb. I was born in Muskegon nearly 78 years ago and have seen it go through many ups and downs. In the 1950s, it was a bustling heavy industry city of 52000. As you stated, the population has now shrunk to 38000 even though the metropolitan area has a population of 172000. For the first time in many years, Muskegon was one of just a few Michigan cities to actually gain population in the 2020 census. When I was growing up, the lakeshore downtown was lined with iron foundries and other large factories. Traffic jams were common in the mornings and afternoons when the shifts changed. Unfortunately, the prosperity and good-paying jobs came at a cost. The entire downtown was routinely cloaked in a heavy, smelly orange haze spewing from the foundry smokestacks and coating everything with an orange hue. Adding to the mix was a large papermill farther down on the lakeshore which, when the wind was right, emitted a pungent and obnoxious odor across the city. When driving in on the expressway from Grand Rapids, you could even see the orange haze in the distance and start smelling the city from 15 miles away! Outsiders dubbed Muskegon "that dirty factory town," and we are still trying to lose that moniker. Your excellent video will greatly help us in that effort. Thank you again for your work.

@@daledriscoll9176 our entire family fell in love with Muskegon. We could definitely see ourselves living there. In addition to this video and the museum video, I also have a few lighthouse ones from Michigan. It was so good hearing your thoughts on this!

I used to party at the CIO clubhouse. All the black entertainers from north to south, east, and west would perform at the then-called COI Hall. I would sneak in to enjoy the concerts.

Looks like Muskegon has found a way to seduce back into town, at least for shopping, the white flight I knew in my 10 yrs. there, 2002-2011. Also, you ignored its greatest assets: Lake Muskegon and the Lake Michigan proximity, Harbortown, beautiful beaches, and Lake Michigan itself. I am very impressed with the downtown renaissance and wish them well. As for the Black majority, not much has changed, at least from your video.

I have lived here 30+ years. Muskegon is a dump. Nothing but dollar stores and weed shops. No good restaurants. Nothing to do there. All the historic stuff you can see in a fraction of a day. I live 2 miles from Lake Michigan. I haven't been there in a decade. They are trying to make it like a Little Spring Lake. You can't polish a turd. However, you can roll 1 in glitter.

I was born in Muskegon in '61, and grew up there. So I'll give you a bit of historical perspective. When I was real young, in the mid 60's, Muskegon was a vibrant, booming factory town. I remember hearing factory whistles that signalled things like lunchtime, or shift changes. Driving by Campbell's Foundry at night, you could see fire coming out the tops of the blast furnaces like volcanoes. The Milwaukee Clipper sailed daily, we had passenger rail service via C&O, and downtown was full of booming stores like Kresge's, Sears, Hardy Herpolsheimer's, and the Walgreen's store even had a restaurant inside! Yes, there were neighborhoods that still had black cinder streets, but much of the neighborhoods had well kept homes, and neatly manicured lawns. All those dirty factories provided good paying jobs for thousands of Muskegonites who worked hard during the week, and on the weekends would go "up north" to a lake or cabin. My friend's parents would take us to Twin Lake, just a few miles up the road. Going back today is sad. The downtown area is clean, and, yes, "quaint." But it is quiet and empty, and the vibrant life that used to pulse through the city full of hard-working immigrants is gone. Lots of open space where there once were buildings where business flourished. I remember groups way back in the early 70's who wanted to shut down industry because of all the dirt and noise. They got their wish.

@@samsrailventures1961I agree it is quiet during regular working hours and winter but western ave is very alive during summer weekends. This video isn’t the best representation.

@samsrailventures1961..... My family arrived in Muskegon 5 years before you were born when I was just a baby, but you're correct about everything...except we didn't go up north for the weekends. Some notable names you didn't include are Mr. Scribs, House of Chan, Robert Hall's, Big Chef, WTRU, Getty Drive-In Theaters, Mona Lake, Marsh Field, Ar-Jer's, and Pioneer Park.

Mr. Scrib's. I'll give you. Mona Lake? Seriously!? It's cold and polluted. I think House of Chan turned into Joe's Bistro. Muskegon is still a dump.

They keep those orange barrels in Ohio during the winter and as soon as spring comes they put them all on our Michigan roads so no one can drive on vacation and actually get there.

Hi I know this is not related to this video but to another video you posted 6 months ago and i wanted to make sure you saw my comment. With donating to biolife I was wondering how many times I can donate in a month? I’ve already donated once and plan on going again in a couple days. I was wondering if it’s possible for me to donate 8 times a month as long as they are spread out as far as two per week?
