I've had a beard for about 15 years now. I once shaved it clean and was shocked to discover that I had developed, unbeknownst to me, a double chin and the beginnings of jowls. In other words, I aged under the beard. I immediately grew it back.

You definitely got that right. Shaved my 11 month beard off 6 months ago and although it was followed with a bit of regret, I learned that lesson all over again. The beard is not the identity. Currently rocking a Curly Bill from Tombstone Mustache + Soul Patch look. Haven’t felt the need to grow the beard out at all and I think it’ll be that way for a while. Great video, Greg. It’s actually my first time seeing you clean shaven and you look great either way!

Oh no. I know you said your beard wasn't your identity. But for me, after retiring from the military, it's become my new self expression. It represents the next chapter after almost 23 years of shaving. Now, I didn't shave on the weekends or during leave, but does 7 days of stubble really make a beard? No it does not. But now, I can feel free and love what I see in the mirror. Now the biggest question is what scent of oil do I use and how long do I want to let it grow. Simple pleasures my friend.

I get wanting to shave it off after a year. I've had my beard for almost 15 years. Hell, I was... almost crying seeing that magnificent Viking beard going away (I'm on my first month of a minoxidil treatment to see if I can, finally at my 45, grow a beard, even a short goatee would be ok). I also saw that you shaved your head.. probably with a hair conditioner? [/sarc] I do have to say if mine came in that thick I would never shave it off. That's a rare gift you have. I'm glad you cut out a large goatee, but why didn't you stop at other styles on the way down like a short goatee and horseshoe stache? I had a goatee about 20 years ago and shaved it off, but I kept a mustache long enough to take a few digital pics and I somehow lost them. I really wish I had those pics!

No you taught me everything I know about beards. Haha I did the same thing before myself. And for me I regretted it. Once I hit 40 in my family your face seems to get fat so having my beard completely avoids that. That’s why I’ll never start over again. Hope you’re happy with your decision.
